As a Canadian who has sat in the hospital waiting room for 7 hours on multiple occasions, I would still rather have free health care than have to pay all my medical bills myself. I can’t believe that some countries don’t have free health care. It makes no sense. I’m pretty sure I’d either be dead or my family would be so broke over my medical bills if I didn’t live in Canada. I will never live anywhere else because of free health care. Having to wait long periods of time isn’t even a factor for me. Other people need their care too
Even with insurance, waiting rooms (in Washington where I live) also can have extreme wait times. I had to get my appendix taken out and I waited for HOURS in a wheel chair waiting to be seen with intense pain and high fever. I don’t remember how much the surgery was since I was only 17 but I know it was thousands.
The funny part is that you still wait for 6-7 hours in the U.S. AND pay so much for healthcare. I waited in a hospital waiting room with a fractured foot for nearly 7 hours. And mine wasn’t even the worst, there were elderly people sitting there who couldn’t breathe and thought they may have blood clotting/possibly having a stroke. They had been there for even longer than I had. It’s so sad
Sarah Nightingale I had to get my appendix removed 2 years ago, they kept me in the hospital for 2 nights to perform tests and did the surgery on day 3 and sent me home. The price was $64,000 and I had to pay my insurance out of pocket max that was $6,750. Prices here are insanely inflated.
I'm a dog person, so please do a video introducing them ? The story behind their names, where you got them, their likes/ dislikes, funny habits, which parent do they like more, etc.
As an American, my husband and I have had many "we cant afford an ER trip" incidents where we did not receive care we needed. because going to the ER would have cost us thousands. Im envious.
Regarding inclusivity, I guess I just feel like it never hurts to TRY. I’m a black woman and when Benefit finally extended their Hoola Bronzer shade range, I bought Hoola Caramel and was able to enjoy it after hearing white RU-vidrs rave about it for years. I love the Hourglass products I own but it’s also annoying knowing that I can only use certain things from them because they’re not consistently inclusive. The face pallet is a slap in the face because they really had the audacity to release ONE shade of a complexion product (and of course that one shade again caters to white people). I agree that yes, I’m not holding my breath for brands to be more inclusive but I disagree with the idea that POC aren’t looking to buy from them anyway so why try? No shade to Samantha because she’s my actual favorite person on the internet, but I disagree and want Hourglass to step it up. One face pallet year after year is insulting and out of touch.
As an ordinary-white person, I really cannot understand their 6-pan palettes for the last couple of years. Maybe I'm mistaken, but when I look at the shades, their blushes and bronzers are quite deep and intense, as if for people with at least medium skin tones, and powders/highlighters are light and lighter. They remind me of old multicolour face palettes "for everybody" when in reality you can use only two or three shades out of 6-8. Maybe I'm wrong, of course.
I had the same thoughts. Most brands didn’t start off inclusive so as a black woman we had to constantly check back in general if we wanted to buy makeup that matched us. Look at drugstore brands, they didn’t use to be inclusive. And with Fenty and Pat selling the way they do, it doesn’t make sense to really believe these brands don’t know black ppl will spend their money. It’s like Hollywood and the box office, no matter how many big box office films are led by black people, they’ll still say we aren’t marketable. It’s intentional at this point because it’s proven inclusivity does sell
I agree with you. I'm not black (i'd say I'm a white passing person, Mediterranean colouring) but won't purchase from brands that show to only cater to a certain skintone. Coincidently most are luxury brands too (Hourglass, CT and Chanel). I'd say only Dior is inclusive in that price range. Sam - I love your channel and been watching for a while and happy for your success as a fellow Canadian. I think you have the power to address this given your relationship with hourglass. If more influencers refused to promote non-inclusive brands, the more we are on the path to get somewhere. Otherwise we keep going on condemning and that would do nothing to promote change.
The whole healthcare thing, omg. It honestly makes me want to live in Canada lol. My debt in medical bills is just stupid. I’m sorry if this sounds bad or insensitive to other people, but Covid was the best thing that ever happened to me. Not only did it get me laid off from my very toxic job which literally made me suicidal, but I got to have 6 months of Medicaid which is essentially free healthcare here in the US. I made appointments for everything: dentist, gyno, eye doctor, and got to see my therapist weekly instead of once every other month which was just so amazing I could cry, actually I probably will cry lmao. I’m also incredibly lucky to have found the kindest GP/PCP that even when I don’t have insurance, she won’t charge me for anything, and she filled all of my prescriptions for the rest of the year, God bless that woman. ❤️
Healthcare in Canada isn't really universal, imo. Yes, hospital visits, family doctors, and certain prescription drugs are covered, but dental care and vision care are not. I haven't experienced it personally but I think physical therapy and counselling are also not covered. Don't get me wrong, I'm incredibly grateful for what we have since I've had multiple urgent care visits, but I still feel like I "have to" maintain a job that provides health insurance.
@@amanda88988 to be able to go to a doctor or the hospital and be able to get medication I and my family members need sounds amazing. Yes we always want more. But man you have no idea how fortunate you are.
Universal Healthcare LITERALLY saves lives! I can't imagine how scary it is to not get medical care because you can't afford it or be in a huge amount of debt.
Sorry this is really delayed but someone copied one of her apple music playlists to Spotify: open.spotify.com/playlist/3LJNiEc12opmqTCef29YEA?si=c1RSFofVQlqhV8i8Fiaoew
As a Brit in the UK I think anyone who has had a serious accident would say that our emergency services and trauma services in the NHS England&Wales and across our Universal Healthcare system are truly fantastic!! In an emergency, the UK NHS really works miracles. However, the management of chronic illness and long term disability and treatment of non terminal illness is not universal. We call it the Postcode Lottery, because depending where you live, you experience is so vastly different it has the potential to be the difference between life and death if your daily healthcare management becomes too difficult, you can't work, your relationships break down, your medication side effects are horrific and you aren't seeing your consultant for another 9months instead of the 4monthly it's supposed to be... But if you walk into traffic, the paramedics are superb and will almost certainly arrive quickly enough to save you! #tongueincheek
Gosh! I live in the US and those two accidents would take a lifetime to pay off. Pay off haha no, we would most likely have to declare bankrupty with not being able to pay. I'm so glad your family is all well!
Amen to Universal Healthcare! I’m from the US and I am currently fighting my insurance company (for almost 5 months) to pay for a PET scan that was requested by 3 different providers to confirm a diagnosis in order to start chemo treatments...which the insurance won’t pay for until I have the diagnosis that I need a PET scan to get but they won’t pay for the PET scan because I don’t gave a diagnosis. Yup. I can’t get the test for the diagnosis in order to pay for the treatment until I have a diagnosis to get the test. 🤯 In the meantime I am getting more sick and they are having to pay for more and more appointments/meds/tests that they WILL pay for but would stop if I could just get the damn scan. (Oh, and out of pocket costs for the scan would be over $20,000 for some reason.)
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’m from the US too. We need universal health care now. No one should have to go through this. Being sick is horrifying enough. I hope so much your PET scan somehow goes through and gets covered.
my mother passed away from cancer, and the most frustrating thing to watch wasn't her terrible doctor telling her she was "getting better"the day before she died while he was on vacation in france, it wasnt watching her take her last breath, IT WAS watching her sit on the phone for HOURS WHILE DOING CHEMO (literally while doing chemo) with her insurance company trying to get tests etc covered. the apathy astounds and angers me. i hope you get this settled soon, and good luck on your journey, my thoughts are with you❤
With 20.000 you can come to Greece have awesome vacation do a pet scan have a great time and go back to your country having maybe at least 15.000 at your pocket.
An example of health care costs in the United States: My water broke at 26 weeks pregnant. I spent 3 weeks on hospital bed rest. My son was born vaginally at 29 weeks and spent 5 weeks in the NICU. No ventilation or respiratory assistance. Just there learning to feed and gaining weight. Cost: 999,789.00
I feel like the fact that shows like Patriot Act and Last Week Tonight are more credible than most news outlets when they were originally supposed to be comedy shows tells us almost everything we need to know.
I’ve taken my version of the tattered camo jacket to an alteration business for repair, and it’s money well spent. I’m way too sentimental, but we love what we love. My husband gave me a purple bathrobe 30 years ago, I’m about to take it in for some rehab.
Sam has been at the top of my watch list forever. I always think about the first video of hers I watched. Like everyone I pick something new to watch based on thumbnails and/or the title. I thought this girl is talented and beautiful....but I never expected the honesty or the amazing sense of humor that comes from her. I could listen to her say “First of all - HOW DARE YOU” every day of my life. I feel lucky to be getting more content from her lately. Keep it up. You always make me laugh and teach me something new.
I SO needed that talk at the end about mental health during this time. I’ve been struggling so much despite feeling like there was no *actual* reason for me to be so down.
I really hope we get a dips and sauces cooking video. Ever since I listened to the podcast that discussed your dips and sauces I want to know the secrets
when i’m doing things around the house (cleaning, getting ready in the morning, making food, sitting in front of the tv with the volume turned all the way down) i always find one of your old videos and play it/listen to it. i find your voice soothing and i just enjoy your personality and your presence 🥰
My boyfriend and I are also plant-based and we’ve had the same discussion about future children. I 100% agree with you on cooking plant-based at home but letting them eat differently outside of the house if they want to. I’d also follow whatever advice their pediatrician would recommend for their at home diets. :}
I'm having a rough mental health day, and this video really calmed me down and made me feel better. This may sound sad but it made me feel like I was talking to someone and having a nice conversation. Through quarantine I've had pretty little interaction with people, so videos like these I love.
The strangest thing I’ve noticed in the Sephora where I work is people are still buying so many lip products! Colored products too, not just balms. A few people have said they still like wearing lipstick on zoom meetings and some even like to wear lipstick under their masks. I’d love to see info released in lipstick sales in 2020 vs 2019, 2018 etc to see if it’s really gone down all that much
It has a ton of talc in it. Maaaybe you would like the coverfx perfect setting powder/matte powder...their powders don’t have talc & they’re ‘clean’ beauty items at ulta. I absolutely love those.
I just want to know which one you think is the best now. Worst cliff hanger of my life!! Haha I agree and at first was super happy to purchase and use it. Then I started seeing the entirety of my face look like crap and it just seemed to make my under eye concealer be so stuck on that I looked like some weirdo who did her makeup in the dark.. 😩😩
I was recently diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression, but definitely went untreated for a long time. I know you’ve detailed your struggles on here, and I have to say, no matter what kind of day you may be having, seeing you get up and do your thing for the interwebs is motivating. So, thanks 🎉
thank you for this :) my monetization is on but sometimes it can take a couple hours to update, but i just wanted to post the video so it'll be up for the west coast morning people!
This was a really good video. I appreciate your sincerity in speaking about difficult subjects. I feel like more and more RU-vidrs are trending towards talking about "real" stuff and there is a collective conversation about mental illness, inclusiveness, and other serious things that some people might not get exposed to or get help with irl. It's nice.
Just discovered Sam in the last week or 2. It's been a while since I’ve been into makeup but thanks to Sam I’ve been re-inspired. Also love your humor. Things have been pretty dark for me lately and you’ve been a bright spot.
Stopping midway through to comment. I adore you, Sam and I am so happy that you seem to consider things carefully. I am at the bit where you talk about plant based diets with kids and I love your pov. I had the same principals with my kids. Cooked at home but let them be kids. I found the hardest part was finding a pediatrician who understood we were a plant based family. Some like to push the "you must give them whole milk" or "it's time to start meat".. and I know a lot of new parents feel stressed by that. We were lucky to have a pediatrician who knew we were plant based and gave us the alternatives. And our toddler (now 16) became addicted to beans and tofu. And our current 7 year old can tell soy mils by the brand. Good luck girl!❤
Shit, I didn’t know you had a podcast. I’m so excited I’ve been listening to podcasts while driving, and was looking for more to follow I’m stoked now!
Im so happy to hear that you took steps toward being cruelty free. I switched to cruelty free 3 years ago after seeing a video what they do to bunnies and that upset me insanely especially because I had a bunny who was my baby and my everything. ♡♡♡
Idk if you sporadically choose the questions or methodically go through them with purpose but what a beautiful way to end this video and a beautiful message to end with Sam. That’s something I will be sure to relay to my students.
Sam, I need you to know that a great tailor can fix that jacket. If you don’t have a great one then my mom can hook you up (she has a business down here in FL). She can fix it and mail it back to you. It CAN be revived! :)
An eerily similar thing happened to my brother when I was 18 and he was 26. His best friend was driving and passed away and when he was out of the medicinally induced coma and learned of that he freaked out and started crying thinking that he was the one driving. That was probably the worst moment in my life, I’m so sorry you had to go through that as well.
My respect for is already very high ! When you said you will allow your children to try other things and not deny them “ cake” my respect went through the roof . Most parents who follow a certain code no matter what that code my be , make their children follow it as well and deny them the “ cake” now the cake could be many different things . Your answer is that of someone who has respect for others wants and opinions you will make an amazing Mom Sam , tbh I don’t know what stage was worse toddler or teen they are pretty much the same but one has a bigger vocabulary other than that both stages will make tear up with love and worry lol.
In terms of cruelty free cream products check out Quo from shoppers drug mart! They just redid their whole brand and their base products look so good they have a ton of creamy products (but good variety of powders too) but I have the “pure” cream blush and the “champagne” highlight stick and they’re my new favs🤩
agree i had heart failure and had free hospital care, cardilogist appointments, free medication and tests in Australia...i cant believe some countries dont have universal health care (a minority now actually)
Lmao probably, I do it to mine too. 🤣but I also use matthew when I need something and not many scenarios outside of that unless I’m being like “I can’t believe you did that” matthewwwwww. Haha loved this comment
Love listening to you and your ideas, life experiences, etc. So sorry to hear about your Dad and Bro! I got in a car accident 10 years ago on the freeway as well. I had a combo of your Dad and Bros injuries. 4 brain bleeds, traumatic brain injury, pelvic fracture and my lower back shattered. I have continual care and pain. It is rough a lot of the time. It caused migraines, sleep apnea, bladder issues and an array of other medical problems. We live in Utah so luckily we had insurance or we would have went bankrupt. My care just for the ambulance, emergency stay and rehab for 3.5 months was almost a million dollars. It took me a total of 8 months to learn how to walk, talk, eat, do math, etc. And will always have memory issues and such. But I am so grateful that it put life into perspective and how fragile it is! Hope your Dad and Bro find comfort and healing! 💜 you girl 🥰😘
in the UK i’m so glad we have the NHS, developed in 1948 and been incredible!! as a history and politics student, loved the politics bit at the start, i could rant on but i know it’s a beauty channel❤️
People talk about the wait times for surgeries/etc in Canada like that shit doesn't happen here too. When I had my son, I had to have an emergency c-section. When we got home, I started developing this huge bump on my incision that turned out to be an abscess. My dr told me that he would have to go in surgically, open me up all over again and redo all of my stitches. Said his office would call me when an OR was available. A few days later while I was walking around the block, it burst. I went in and he gave me antibiotics and dressed the wound and said he wouldn't need to do the surgery anymore if it healed well. 4.5 months later I got a random call from his office telling me that a OR spot had opened up and they could schedule my surgery. I was just like....... what. They said it was the first available spot they'd had since he requested it. I live near a major city in a predominantly middle class area.
@@alinalinalinalina It's ok! thankfully it ended up working out! I'd be much more upset about it if I'd been in pain for that whole time, waiting. But, yeah. There are so many instances of people with good insurance in the US having to wait months for dr appointments, procedures, etc. Especially anything mental health or somewhat specialized. So it makes me laugh when this is the first argument against universal healthcare, as if we're some shining pillar of perfection...
if you do cooking videos I'd love to also have a Q&A mixed in or have Matt or Alyssa there to just chat with you. I don't love just cooking videos in general, but I love your personality :)
Love your videos! You have meaningful and educational conversation and that’s whAt I love about your and your content! Also love your makeup as always! Stay fabulous 💋💋💋
I think we have the same opinions about the LM powder. I bought it bc I kept hearing so many youtubers recommend it but it makes my under eye area look so dry & cakey! I much prefer the Elf Halo Glow Setting powder
I'm a Canadian and I love universal health care. I had to go through a kidney transplant and will have to again and the cost of that plus the medications I have to take for life would have left my parents and and my husband and I in debt for the rest of our lives. ❤️ You Sam. Love your podcast also! It feels like therapy
I love hearing your thoughts on things!! I don’t mean to be basic, but girl, paaa-leeeaaasssseeeee do a video on your thoughts about Tati etc drama 😍 thanks 😘
Thank God for universal health care. I'm from Costa Rica and this year I've appreciated my universal health care more than ever. So many lives saved with this pandemic, my mom's included when getting an emergency kidney tumor removed. Wait times suck, but I'd rather those than losing someone because I can't afford their care. I can't believe there's still people who cannot get access to decent health care :( I hope that changes soon
