Also Resin is dangerous! I feel like the dangers are always understated. You NEED a well ventilated area, AND a mask with exchangeable filters. You should not do resin where you eat or sleep. Just because you can’t smell the fumes doesn’t mean they aren’t there, they come out as the resin cures not just when you are mixing. There are a lot of safety precautions, please look them up! And join resin groups to get advice from the pros

I hate advertising. I especially hate when it uses social tricks and pretends not to be advertising. "Like and comment on our podcast; not because we want the good rating, but for a prank!" really should fit that category. And yet... You two are so genuine, I honestly believe you mean it! I mean it; you are probably the only people that I genuinely do not mind being advertised to by. Thank you so much for being yourselves!

On the note of essential tools, to me the difference is whether the results can reasonably be replicated by something else. Like nothing is going to replace the guided perfectly straight cuts you can make with a table saw VS hand tools... So a basic guided saw is a must. A power planer, especially if you're going to be using reclaiming pallet boards and free wood, you're never going to get similar results trying to sand and plane the boards by hand. Conversely there are tools a dremmel could easily take the place of unless you were using them all the time, Like you don't need to have a fancy biscuit joint cutter to do biscuit joining where a dremmel could technically fill the same purpose but also do a bunch of routing and carving and drilling. If you're looking to do anything on a lathe, you aren't going to be able to replace the function of a lathe without one. I DIY all the time on a very limited pension budget, and a dremmel can get me through so much, but the one tool I always wish I had home access to was a guided table-type saw, and an electric planer, because there's just no way to replicate those results with hand guided tools. Also a big power saw with a long blade become essential if you're going to be collecting discarded logs for furniture making, like unless you want someone to cut it for you or to have to go through it by hand [though an easy close second would be a hand saw that has a big and sturdy enough blade to cut through large logs].

You guys should check out Rocketbooks! Reusable, pens are “erasable” even on regular paper AND for that stuff you wanna sketch on actual paper you can still use the app to upload to an electronic repository. For example: I use OneNote. I have tabs/sections for my various projects and when I upload to there, the RB OCR makes my notes, etc. searchable. HUGE benefit when you ask “how did I do that before?” You can also link to Google drive and such, I’m just a OneNote nerd, lol.

i love the explanation/recommendation of multi-use tools as long as they arent inferior. as someone with a small shed & office that doubles as my 3d printer/cnc living space, tools that provide multiple uses are much more valuable to me because of the space limitations.

After watching your ethernet run video, I have to say the best tool I've ever bought is the magnapull kit. 100x easier than wire pullers, and it instantly finds the end in the wall. In my experience it shortens the time of the job by half.

Just adding my 2¢ here so take a penny or leave a penny... if you’re a beginner DIYer you need to understand one simple fact: building most things involves three primary actions; measuring, cutting, and joining. My best advice would be to invest in a really good measuring tool (other a speed square or tape measure), hand drill or driver, and a circular saw or jigsaw.

App Suggestion: Notion! I love using Notion to organize basically my whole life, which Katelyn can relate to. It’s awesome for “connecting the dots” to so many things including your existing Google Drive stuff and more. 📝 For example, I’ve created a Project template inside one of my home dashboards. I can connect that project to a Kanban board or switch to Calendar view. And you can “multi-home” and link to notes, books to read lists, collaboration tools that can include your CRM, etc. 💡 Idea for you: you could have a “Favorites” dashboard that has everything linked, organized by tags and price, notes, etc. and you can choose to publish that to a public webpage for all your fans to follow. As you update the page with new favorites, you could also check off follow up tasks like update Amazon lists, publish to website, etc.

I haven't read all the comments so sorry if someone already mentioned this. For the Alton Brown/single-use question, single-use in terms of restaurant equipment does not mean it is only meant for one purpose. I was intrigued when you first said your mandolin because I immediately though "they have a mandolin with disposable blades??" 😂 The technical term for food establishments (and what Alton Brown I assume was referring to) are single-service articles and single-use articles. Single-service are items designed and constructed for one time, one person use and intended to be discarded after the one time use. For example, carry out items like bags, containers, straws, toothpicks, plastic utensils, etc. Single-use articles are items designed and constructed to be used once and discarded (non necessarily by one person or only one sitting). For example, wax paper, plastic wrap and plastic containers, number 10 cans, buckets, etc that do not meet the standards to be considered "multi-use" by the FDA (e.g., you can't use an old Country Crock container to store other food in a restaurant! It's fine at home since you're not selling the food to anyone but it's not intended to be re-used for other foods). So in DIY, single-service would be something like a disposable glove and single-use would be something like plastic wrap used to cover resin while it bubbles! Love watching your videos. They always make me smile and that’s not something that’s easily found these days! 🙂

Want to regret a tool purchase? Convince yourself you're suddenly going to make tons of use of something in a new category, and buy the top-end version. E.g., I bought a fancy sheet metal bender imagining using it for one project I never ended up doing. I now realize that if I get more into sheet metal work I'll need a variety of tools in that category to really get anywhere with it. You can't really know what you'll need until you start doing it, whatever your IT is.

I think 'single-use' doesn't mean 'one purpose' in the context of the question. I think it's as in, single use plastics like cling wrap and zip lock bags and plastic spoons and plates and cups. Stuff that is used once and goes to land fill. So I think the equivalent in a work shop would be like your stirring sticks and measuring cups and things like that, what sorts of considerations have you made to reduce the amount of stuff you're sending to land fill.

But why must all clear plastics be brittle?! I'd love to be able to see stuff but I'm heavily invested in Rubbermaid totes because they're virtually indestructible. All clear plastic totes will eventually crack and break especially in the cold, unless you exclusively work with light stuff like fabrics AND don't toss your totes around.

I disagree. Everyone needs hearing protection if they are going to do something loud. Anything that you need to raise your voice to speak over is too loud to do without hearing protection. You have only one pair of ears. As an audiologist I see so much preventable hearing loss. Hearing protection is just an important as safety glasses.
