Thank you to everyone who submitted a question, be sure to LIKE this video if you want to hear more of them answered in a future Q&A.
Time Stamps:
0:47 How do you find contentment and not compare yourself to others in this type of Picture-Perfect-Pinterest-Instagram society?
2:44 Could you give us more details about how you do your two week grocery shopping? What meals you do towards the end of the two weeks when produce is bad, etc.
4:31 How do you approach Christmas gifts, birthdays, anniversaries etc? Save cash all year? Do you set a budget? Buy for nieces/nephews/adult-siblings?
6:26 What are the mindset shifts that you feel have helped you achieve success in maintaining a frugal lifestyle?
8:14 Do you have any tips for saving money on utility bills? (water, electric etc.)
11:11 Did you grow up in a frugal family and are your siblings frugal as well? Also, is Dan as frugally minded as you are and is there ever tension between you when you disagree on purchases?
15:00 How to deal with large unexpected expenses? Do you invest? Do you save for college? How to save for something big on one small income?
17:44 How to stay frugal when it comes to kids I mean toys, activities, clothes, etc.
21:03 When you are going thrifting for home decor, how do you know if something will work in your home style wise (what do you keep in mind when out looking) and how do you layer your decor to add depth and warmth?
23:55 Do you have a guideline (minimum dollar amount) for when you will sell something vs just donate it? The time/money balance is sometimes tricky.
25:15 Could you share some frugal, healthy (healthier?) family meal ideas? I struggle so much in this area. Breakfast, lunch and dinner?
27:09 Does your family live off 1 income?
27:53 Do you ever feel triggered to buy something because you see it on another RU-vid or Instagram channel? How do you practice being content and grateful for what you have and resist the urge to accumulate more?

What a wonderful perspective, thank you so much, Hilary. I pray that your advice helps married couples out there identify with what is a truly vital part of a ‘partnership’. I suffered a horrible divorce (married 29 yrs) in recent years because he identified himself with a ‘corporation’ rather than a human being. When he no longer had that ‘corporate’ identity, I was the one who perished. It takes two to support and enjoy a life of what’s truly important in a partnership - you are truly blessed! Thank you!! 💕🌼🌸💐

Please know that you are very much contributing to the "true wealth" of your family in VERY significant ways. I watched my mother taking care of us five children and saw how much it meant to have homemade meals, a well cared for home, mounds of laundry always cleaned, pressed, folded, her volunteering to interact in school projects, bake or donate time, her teaching us basic Christian values and shaping our personal code of ethics, her showing by example...how to love her children, teach them morals, lessons of having a loving, caring heart...the security of knowing Mom would be standing there, waiting, always ready to listen, nuture and help us walk thru the trials, challenges and celebrations within our childhood. There would never have been enough money to pay for, or true commitment from... babysitters, housekeepers, teachers, etc. ...Mom was the only person who could do that for her babies.

What an inspiration you are to young families! My husband and I always focused on living below our means (which meant scripting for many years) in order to prepare for kids, schooling, activities, and a comfortable home. After 48 years of arriage, we have been enjoying a retirement with no debts, no mortgages, and savings sufficient to travel and enjoy spoiling our grandsons. We were able to provide for both of our daughter to daughters finish college and post graduate degrees without debt and they are now able to support themselves and their families. I have never regretted our decisions and am proud that our girls practice some of the same financial strategies. Your current series on living a frugal lifestyle is providing such good advice for your peers who can see what a lovely life you lead at your age as opposed to being jealous of what others have or are able to do. The old adage "Never judge a book by it's cover" is a good reminder that others may appear to be doing well, but actually have unreasonable debt.

Thank you for doing this Q&A and for answering my question about mindsets. You gave us a lot of wonderful practical tips but I think the most valuable one, the one that speaks to the core of the issue, is around having contentment in your heart and that there is no possession that will give us that. I think realizing this and trying to cultivate that contentment from within is the key to so many of the issues in the world, not just the financial ones. Thank you for reminding us of that. Have a lovely day. 😊

Wish we were neighbors. Lol. You’re wise and smart about your contentment and so head strong on what you do. Putting God first always help. I did stop looking at instagram and stopped watching certain videos because it triggered me to want things I don’t need. I am pretty content with everything. I spend more time now on bible study and watching Bible focused inspirational videos and it helps to be thinking eternal rather than earthly things as you also mentioned. I love that you touch upon gratitude as being a major part of being frugal. Being grateful leads to joy and contentment and quiets that need to be more through owning things. I think it can be so easy as a frugal person to be unaware that we can have the very same heart issues when it comes to consuming as someone in debt. Secondhand shopping is wonderful for the environment and wallet, but it can be every bit as addictive (maybe more so) as conventional shopping. Being constantly on the prowl for yard sales and deals won't bankrupt you, but it can leave you feeling empty and craving that next good deal hit. I do love ThredUp and Poshmark for simplifying the secondhand process, but in the end, even ThredUp is a business and can lure you. You can waste as much time scrolling as you would yardsaling. Even if you love yardsaling, it can lead to clutter and a revolving door of items in and out of your home. It's much harder to get things out of a home than bring things in for many people.

@jacque2317

I agree. I realized early this year that I coped with the pandemic by scouting yard sales, free items that were available for curbside or porch pick up on, or going into thrift stores. I tried to declutter items as much as I brought in but definitely became addictive as I justified not spending a lot. But I was still spending. I'm definitely trying to be more mindful of my spending this year and giving myself permission to go and browse and yard sales or thrift stores but making it clear to myself I don't have to buy anything I can just enjoy looking. I realize it's best to not even tempt myself and practice being contempt with what we own.

This was SUCH a good point on contentment! If you are not presently content with your life, chances are , you are not going to be content with your new purchase. If you are , it will be only for a fleeting moment. In my younger years I was the worst. I would think If I could JUST get that pool, If I could JUST get my covered porch or If I could JUST get granite countertops. When the time came that I got these things the newness would wear off very quickly and Id move directly to the next big thing on my list. Now I appreciate the beauty of just having things clean and tidy and it gives me such satisfaction when I can see my money accumulating in savings.

Look for sports/programs through your local church, YMCA and local colleges. Our kids have done swim team, automotive camps, gymnastics, karate, soccer, baseball and lots of other things. All of the programs have been very affordable. We also traded equipment with other parents to keep sports equipment cost at a minimum

Re: kids activities, if you have a budding soccer player, ballerina, football player, skater, gymnist, concert pianist, skier, etc., engage relatives to put some amount towards offsetting that cost (which adds up over the years) in lieu of a more expensive birthday/Christmas present. I am talking about kiddos who are aiming for the Olympics level of skill and are capable of the daily commitment. This is very expensive over time but so fulfilling to see what these kiddos can achieve. Not something that all families will face but thought I'd mention something that's worked for folks I know whose kiddo has done this.

agreed. I don't have kids myself but I have nieces and nephews. Instead of bday gifts, I'm the one pushing them to do activities. I'm that aunt who gets excited to gift horseback riding lessons, etc. I do enlist friends to help. I have a friend who teaches violin so I asked him if he could teach one of my nieces how to play.

@@dianaragub-schwartz4416 it is amazing how with some encouragement and of course personal desire children can really go far. Too bad it costs quite a bit (and the time commitment alone can be the major challenge for some families). My friend's daughter has ADHD and gymnastics/cheer have kept her together. She's fearless (the little girl who gets thrown to top of the pyramid) talented and dedicated. Happy to hear other adults recognize the support needed and actually step up. My husband and I saved our coin change and put it in jars each night. At end of month, it was deposited in bank. It just became a habit and also helped us not to just blow the change on little, wasteful purchases. It was always a nice surprise to see how much that "small change" had added to our savings at end of year. We also put a certain amount in a vacation fund at bank, so that when we did go on a vacation away from local area, we had all the expenses paid for from our vacation fund.

Hi Hilary, I have always enjoyed you, your posts, the glimpses of your life that you share with us, and the fact that you boldly share your belief in Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This post is yet another one in which I have enjoyed, and have gained valuable information that I hope to incorporate into my life/home as well. Hilary, my husband and I are graduates of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University Program. We are So Thankful that we are now blessed to be debt free, (except for our home mortgage; although we have been blessed to have paid off our loan on the property in which we built our home). Hilary, you are right, it is so exciting and very emotional to me to listen to others share their stories of becoming debt free. Hilary, I am So Grateful that I found your RU-vid Page. Thank you So Much for allowing The Lord to shine through you as you inspire, and encourage so many of us. Continued blessings to you and your Sweet Family. -In Christ, Paula

Watching you while drinking my latte from my secondhand espresso maker. I remember watching your other video about finding FB MP stuff. I found my never used and still in the box espresso machine from fb. Its only $80 whereas is about $150-200 in amazon and target.

Thank you for this wonderful series! I appreciate that your content has always been practical and genuine. I personally am finding it very hard to stick with most youtubers content. So much of it is new target or walmart hauls or redecorate with me videos. Its too too much. The same people are putting up and taking down decorations and home decor every week!

Re: cost savings, whenever you think you're getting a cost savings, put that amount in an account, jar, etc. Example, I mow my lawn each week. I could pay someone $20/week. Since I mow, I am "saving" that $20. So put that in that account. I went to store and bought item 'X' for 15% off. Now take that amount from your wallet (usually spelled out on receipt) and put that in your account/jar. This will make you reconsider your purchases even when the store gives you a perception of 'saving' while you are spending. Also a starting point for saving if this is alien concept. If you do a large number of financial transactions per month and are always hunting for deals this will either reduce those (thereby getting you to buying exactly the necessities) or it will get you saving. Esp. eye opening when you might be thinking "I can't save".

Our electric company sent us a nest thermostat for shipping cost and it has really made a difference. It auto adjusts to your schedule and really makes a difference.

I know this post is old, but I think I have a valid way for someone to easily bump up their income. I am a housemother at a maternity home. It is either 12 or 24 hour shifts. I work 4 -24 hour shifts a month. Several women only work one shift a month. That would be a very easy way to clear around $240 a month. Very flexible. There are several similar opportunites in my town-orphange, girls home, nursing home.

I'm curious your views/tips on health insurance costs. Do you purchase a plan through an employer or private sector? Is it wise to pay cash and not have it as a monthly bill when you're young and (likely) healthy? For many I know this bill is one of their largest each month so I'm curious your take on it. Thanks! 💜

I resinated with many of the things you have said. I have either bought second hand clothing for the majority of my life I am now sixty one and only have myself to think about, I do buy some things new now. I have no debts because I have always been frugal but honestly I still struggle having paid full price for things because I feel like I have waisted money.

I agree about homes! We have about a 1859 sq ft home(including basement) and it saves so much. We went a good 6-7 months without in spring/summer without filling propane.

Things DO become clutter and ARE work to maintain! It's been hard during this global pandemic season to have restraint, but reminding myself of those 2 facts when I click on "view cart" has been helpful!
