I remember being 18 years old and I was set to travel to Asia for the first time ever. I looked at shows about local eateries and culture I found Anthony Bourdain. He shaped how I travel, how I met people, how to embraced local culture. I have eaten everything and met everyone I could. I have friends all over the world because of this man. He was my travel guru, and had an impact in my life, he never knew. But in his self aware way, I think he had an idea how he impacted the world.

I won't pretend to be the first person to discover Anthony, but I came in pretty early in the game - a good friend and mentor that I first started working in high end restaurants in NYC passed me an already fairly dog eared copy of Kitchen Confidential maybe a few months after it was first published (it was SCANDALOUS among cooks and chefs in NYC) Athony's knowlege, sarcasm, rebelliousness and blunt sense of humor came through immediately in the book - and then he popped up on TV. I watched all of these early A Cooks Tour episodes a couple of times before he blew up and went on to No Reservations. Needless to say, here we are, decades later with an ending that, (I don't think) anyone saw coming. Now, I'm back, watching all of these early episodes with a familiar wonder - what strikes me most is his wicked sense of humor and his unique choice of words and point of view when describing all things culinary. He is truly a very funny guy, in a half nerdy, half cocky punk rock way. He was a very ballsy guy but also subtle and humble. These ACT videos are kinda raw and simple but that's what makes them so interesting. He wasn't the first to do these kind of culinary travel videos but he definitely changed the genre forever and paved the way for chefs, journalists and presenters today.

You know, I'd never heard of Tony when his death was headline news, then I saw that his primary line of work was a chef. And I just didn't get it, how can someone in the culinary line of work be considered such a beloved public figure and essentially transcend his profession? But after getting familiar with these episodes (among other food/travel shows), and the passion and curiosity he was filled with, I'm glad to consider myself a fan now. RIP sir.
