The NBA is a business, they’re world class at marketing and brand strategy and it’s a no brainer to make Anthony Edwards the focal point of the league, he exudes swagger, he’s funny, he’s youthful, he’s not afraid to speak his mind and his media literacy is growing. Add charisma to explosive ability on the court and you have a recipe for global stardom. Wemby is too low key and cerebral to truly take on being the face of the league, he has a personality fit for the Spurs, and a lot of European players just don’t market themselves like that in basketball because Europe is all about soccer. If they’re not ever going to be the biggest stars in their own country it’s hard to see how they can do that in America. Mbappe is the biggest star in Europe along with Haaland and even Ronaldo still. The Messi craze has already subsided in the US.
