Shaq was a free agent and was trying to establish himself in the acting/rap game. He chased money not rings. When he joined LA, Kobe was an unknown commodity. Eventually, Kobe wanted to be the alpha and the Lakers chose to send an aging but still potent Shaq to Miami to pair with a promising rookie in Wade. Wade had only one year under his belt before Shaq joined the Heat he wasn't a mega star. The rest of his stints? Sure you could say he chased rings but when washed up former greats do that it is acceptable because they are no longer in their prime and are no longer capable of carrying a team. Even if they win, they won't get the lions share of credit. When LeBron and Bosh joined Wade in Miami they CHOSE to team up. They did so early in their primes. They controlled their destiny. Barkley chose to be traded and had little choice where he ended up. Shaq chased money, he never colluded with other players to team up in LA or Miami. Say what you want about the later years of his career where he himself was essentially a role player with the Cavs, Suns, and Celtics, but his Lakers years weren't spent gathering teams of "Super friends" to shift the competitive advantage in their favor. Lakers management at that time had a storied history of winning as a franchise, so why not go there? Especially with everything that LA (the city) had to offer at the time? In my opinion Salary cap and player leverage are a different conversation, and present a hypothetical scenario that I can't speak on.

At the end of the day the truth of the matter was it was frown upon, looked down on, generally not permitted to leave a team to join another team with a top tier player (top 10-15). Nowadays it's a lot more acceptable to not only join or create a super team but it's actually a lot more feasible for it to happen. Now we can distract and say things like well you can even do it back in the day because of salary caps and this on the other which is true but the point is if Shaq went and played with Jordan purely because he's the goat and it would help him win a championship as well he would have looked super weak and would not have the respect of his peers. Now don't get me wrong that's not saying putting yourself in a good situation is bad. But there's always been an Unwritten code of what you can do and what you can't do and joining a well-performing team is in the acceptable range. Absolutely. The Lakers were far from a superteam. Only way this would make any sense is if Shaq joined the Sonics, maybe Spurs or Jazz. He would've stayed with the Magic, but they refused to pay him any reasonable money. And what is this nonsense Bulls argument? KD didn't join the Cavs. LeBron and Bosh didn't team up with Wade the year after he won the championship. And then Gil himself even points out that the Magic had 60 wins, they were even a better team than the Lakers. And then he goes on and tells lies about Barkley, he had 20pts in his second season with the 76ers, second most after Malone and played more minutes than Malone and Dr.J. Also the 76ers didn't make it to the conference finals. Gil just knows nothing, makes up stuff and screams.

I hate this statement because its 50/50 cuz sometimes the loudest person in the room has the best point and most accomplishments. This statement is a stigma that only reads true situationally

Not competitive, literally everything about the sport is so watered down and backwards.. that’s why teams like the nuggets and 76ers, Celtics, and Heat make it far every year despite having only 1-2 stars. Every other team depends on Nick Fury to assemble the best for 1 f’ing season and STILL end up making trades afterwards.. the shit was cool at first but now u even see it in our youth. They think it’s cool to switch high schools now, not colleges, high schools, reclass, etc rather than work hard to get over the hump.
