In this scene, with the leverage Blunt had over Philip, it was ludicrously strong, BUT that doesn't take away the sheer, polished, brass cahoonas/balls it took for Blunt to deliver it to Philip. If Blunt didn't have the leverage, I very much doubt he'd have DARED threaten Philip in the slightest, for it would have been a death sentence, I'm sure.

I remember and admire this scene for it serving as a very well-written illustration of brinksmanship. That's to take nothing away from Blunt's treachery. Rather, it highlights how carefully we need to handle even those who we believe have no..."out".

I never liked Thatcher but I respect how she stood up in Parliament, in 1979, and coolly revealed Sir Anthony Blunt as the Fourth Man. British spies are often forgiven for helping the Soviets before WWII ended BUT the Nazis & Soviets invaded Poland at the same time, it was pre-arranged during talks for the Ribbontrop - Molotov Treaty. A non-aggression pact that made many western reds abandon Soviet communism. So when you hear "I helps Russia because they were the only chance to defeat the Nazis" know that Russia was allied with the Nazis - for the first 2 years Britain fought Germany.
@zen4men
@zen4men 3 месяца назад
Yes, not many people realise that. For every thousand TV programs repeating ad nauseum the crimes of the Nazis, one might chance upon one detailing a crime by Communists, yet the list of the dead, tortured and maimed by Communists is probably a thousand to one against those of the Nazis. /

I had a great aunt here in Australia, it was like the Australian version of "keeping up appearances". She used to bang out a few "believe you me". It's archaic, and posh people are generally conservative about culture, including language, if not other things. Chaucer, Shakespeare, and others occasionally used the v/s/o ordering for imperative emphasis, which is why it is still used.
