One common problem for many Ferrari owners is that they need to keep their cars on a battery tender due to parasitic losses. I've already helped multiple owners deal with dead batteries, trying to charge or worse yet, jump start their cars. You really need to be careful when jump starting a Ferrari as you can accidentally fry an ECU and then you're looking at massive repair bills!
Antigravity Batteries sent me one of their H6 Group 48 Lithium Ion batteries to put into the Ferrari 458. It fits perfectly using the factory mounts and connections, but the Antigravity Battery is 30LBS lighter, has 1500CCA vs 900CCA, but best of all it has the restart feature which allows you to "jump start" your car if the battery starts to sense it's getting low.
Basically this means, when the battery senses the power getting low, it shuts itself off. You then can use a remote control or the button on the battery to turn on the restart feature, which turns back on the battery and gives you more than enough power to start your car! This means, NO MORE BATTERY TENDER! No more getting stuck with a dead battery! Absolutely amazing.

Dan, one thing to keep in mind with the test you did on the Antigravity. When you saw 13.24 volts on the battery, you need to keep in mind that these do not come fully charged. If you look at the diodes on a Ctek charger, when you first hook it up, it will only light up three diodes. The Antigravity batteries come with what is called storage charge, and that is about 45%, not 100%. You should charge it fully with a Ctek Lithium XS charger, and then do the test leaving the lights on. Trust me, even with the 40Ah battery you got, that will not drain in an hour. You took a battery that was not charged and put it against your Interstate which was fairly charged. When your Antigravity is fully charged, it will show about 13.5-13.6 volts.

I just purchased the antigravity battery, does the CTEK charger you are referring to plug into the Ferrari port? Or do I need to get an adapter?

Lead acid batteries typically work great in short discharge and stay fully charged situations like a car battery. Basically you start the car, short discharge, and then it stays fully charged while driving. Lithium Ion batteries typically are best for long discharge cycles like in power tools or electric cars. They start fully charged and maintain good voltage while being discharged for a long time until depleted. Best practice is 30% for drain and 80% charge for full. This type of battery is really not being fully utilized in this application and the small drain/fully charged state that cars do to maintain the battery may actually be detrimental to this type of battery. Most modern cars have battery minders built into their systems now so unexpected battery drains are prevented, such as leaving lights on etc. Lithium Ion batteries are engineered for repeated fast charge/long drain cycles.... :-)

Be prepared for some sticker shock though. It’s very cool. And I’m needing a battery. When I looked it up, it’s $950. No thanks. I can buy a new lead battery every 2 years for 10 years for that money. And I usually get at least 5 years out of a battery.
@kennyjack9693
@kennyjack9693 4 года назад
First - I have to say I LOVE this channel for showing it’s possible to do some basic maintenance on a supercar yourself! Keep the videos coming! Some thoughts on this battery though: - lead-acid batteries have some level of “self discharge” meaning even without a parasitic load, they lose charge over time. Add in that most vehicles DO have some parasitic drain, and hence you need a battery tender. I wouldn’t say that getting rid of the self-discharge is enough to say you don’t need a tender anymore. I still think you’ll need the tender (and the LiFePo battery probably can’t use the same tender you have now). - there are already some exotics that have a Lithium battery from the factory, but they still require a (specific) tender because of the parasitic loads. The “restart” disconnect is cool, but what if it were to malfunction? On McLaren you can’t open the door without breaking the window because you need power for the lock, the door latch and to drop the window 1/4” to swing the door (as an example) - some other posts are correct in pointing out that you don’t want to have to reset service monitors in the background, because every time you store your car for a few weeks, the “restart” protection is going to kick in and disconnect the battery (heck, if that’s all you want, you can get a stand-alone battery disconnect). Not sure what else happens on the Ferrari if you disconnect power (clock, radio, seat memory, nav?). - I really dig the Tracker! CTek also makes one for AGM/Lead batteries, but it looks like the Antigravity version runs much faster in real-time and has the additional feature of logging actual cranking performance - that’s cool - interesting that the Ah (amp-hour) ratings are somewhat low compared to lead or AGM of the same size. Amp-hour is a good measure of how long the battery can provide power. I get that it has way more cranking power (which is a measure of instantaneous - not sustained power). In a way these batteries have less power before they will NEED to trip the “restart” system and disconnect. - I think this battery is cool if you’re really interested in dropping some weight or have a parking situation where you can’t have a tender - but for my money, I think I’d go with an AGM battery (if your car still has a wet cell) and CTek battery tracker and battery tender or at best go to the Antigravity battery + tracker + tender and just figure it pays that the battery will live longer. I really hope the price comes down over time and I can justify this as good preventative maintenance, but at $800 it’s kind of hard for what it does. ** disclaimer ** I mentioned CTek a couple of times. I DON’T work for them, sponsored by them or anything, just have used their products on classics and modern exotics that rebrand their tenders (even Antigravity recommends CTek as a tender for their LiFePo battery).
@normalguysupercar
@normalguysupercar 4 года назад
Nothing wrong with that plan. I just like the idea of no tender wires running around the garage

I have been wondering for years why cars don't track the battery voltage and amps and when it becomes critical, have some sort of master shutoff. Looks like these guys took it to the next level and said "why not just put it in the battery?" Bad ass!!! Glad they decided to work with you as I have never heard of these and I need to get one!! @@normalguysupercar I feel like its just one of those things. Johnson Controls, who.....dominates the battery market, probably had this figured out 20 years ago. The problem is that there is WAYYY too much money in the battery market and jumpstart boxes that if they made these, their revenue would decrease due to incredible battery life. They would be shooting themselves in the foot.

The problem is not starting the car, the problem is the car's sophisticated safety systems need enough juice from the battery (which has been depleted) these systems are critical to the safe operation of a 458 (or any modern Ferrari for that matter). Back in the days of the 308 they did not have traction control or electronica stability control systems.

I am on 12 years and counting on my AGM Odyssey PC1200 battery, and I have several of them in my various cars. These batteries look interesting, but I am not fully convinced that they are worth it. They are light and powerful, but cost is high and durability still needs to be proven. Recycling Lithium batteries is another con. Thanks for posting your video though.

Neat vid on this product. Between the oil, power stearing, and fuel injector o-ring leaks, my car already has enough fire concern without adding a lithium battery to the equation. I thought about a li-ion battery setup on my work truck, but after seeing one catch fire, I decided against.

@@jackdale9249 - hi. Thanks for the reply. I didn't say "explode." I said "catch fire." Lithium batteries require more precise charging control than lead acid batteries in order to prevent a charging related fire.

I have a code popping up in my 458 (Engine control system failure) and I am thinking it may have something to do with the voltage. I was in the process of purchasing the Braille I48CS Lithium Ion Battery which prices in at about $2,500. Have you done any comparisons with the Braille to the Antigravity ? Also have you seen this code on your 458 ?
@normalguysupercar

I have not done a comparison. That message is a generic one, you need to actually pull the code to know what's actually wrong.

Also Lithium Ion batteries don't like the cold. So any environments colder than 0 F would not be advised. Electric cars actually have heaters built into the battery management system to keep them warm in winter climates. :-)

Hey man, I am a new subscriber and I really like your channel. I have a couple of question for you concerning Ferrari's. Do you actually own the cars or do you lease then for few years ? I was wondering since I saw you went from the 430 to the 458. Second question, If you buy them, you buy them with how many miles aprox. and at what budget ? From an individual or a luxury garage dealer ? Thanks and keep doing your very informative videos on Ferrari repairs ! If I can make a suggestion it would be useful to detail the repair procedure, show us, hot to, talk about the time it takes and the cost or every piece you replace.

Cool battery. I like the battery status, but it will draw power making it lose power even faster. Cool gadget though. I just use my tenders and batteries will last 3-4yrs. Eventually this technology will become common place when OEM's start using it. At that time prices will drop, but will still be over $500-600 since an OEM battery is expensive as is. Great review to let us know how it works.

Dan there is some info I think you should make an update video about. You can probably read about it in the response I posted to anther poster. But it is just important to know that it is not a complete failsafe. If it sits in the shut down mode and goes completely dead, the battery is basically toast. So it's an emergency feature, not a replacement for a charger. I learned this the hard way when I found that my charger had been disconnected from two cars over the winter by mistake. Both my AG Group 49 and Group 48 were gone. I did get AG to share costs as the batteries was in their last month of warranty, but they told me that it cannot sit in the shut off mode for longer than 4-6 weeks at the most.

That’s assuming the worst life span of a lead acid battery and the best of the lithium ion. In reality you could purchase a top end lead acid battery for £100 with. A 5 year warranty and 35 years later still have working battery. Compare that to the 3 year full warranty of this AntiGravity battery and the business case looks VERY dodgy!!!

On battery tenders, you have to be careful what you connect to a Li-Ion battery. Some tenders have a high-voltage mode that triggers if the battery is low. That's fine with a Pb-acid battery but may destroy a Li-Ion one. I'd still recommend a tender, particularly if your car has a tracker as they both use juice and don't like it if that auto cut-out trips; the tracker may log that as a theft attempt. But there are Li-Ion compatible tenders out there.

So the automatic shutoff/built-in jumpstart looks like a pretty awesome feature. But if it shuts off the battery then you're still going to be stuck resetting the clock, computer, etc if you run down the charge to the point that it engages. If that is the case and your car has some level of parasitic drain, you have to wonder if it's more annoying to hook up the trickle charger regularly or have to reset everything (assuming the battery drops to that low level regularly).
@normalguysupercar
@normalguysupercar 4 года назад
True but it would take quite a while (many days if not months) for it to drain that much to have it shut off.
