Ferrari 458 Oil Change Kit - 458OCK - bit.ly/2WhavRl
Pennzoil 5w-40 Euro Platinum - amzn.to/2YCnHRV
Launch X-431 PROS Mini - amzn.to/2Qe26fD
Now that the Ferrari 458 is getting a little older, many of them are no longer eligible for the factory maintenance program which means you can either take the car to the dealership (or an independent shop) and pay a lot ($400-500!) or you can DIY the oil change.
Fortunately with a little patience, changing the oil in the Ferrari 458 is pretty simple. The most difficult part is simply removing the under tray panel. There are over 20 10mm bolts holding the under tray on, and a few 4mm hex heads holding the diffuser on as well. Both will need to be removed.
Once the panels are removed, you simply unbolt the 2 sump pan drain plugs using a hex head. Drain the oil into a catch can. Replace the drain plugs using a new crush washer and torque to 60nm or 45ft-lbs.
Remove the drain plug on the oil sump tank using a 22mm socket. Drain the oil into a catch can and replace the plug with a new crush washer. Torque to 60nm or 45ft-lbs.
Remove the oil filter canister from the top of the engine using a 32mm socket. Replace the oil filter cartridge and the o-ring. Reinstall and torque to 25nm or 18ft-lbs.
Using the Launch X-431 PROS Mini or another computer that has the correct functionality, connect to the OBD-II port and reset the oil service life indicator.
Add about 9 quarts of Pennzoil 5w-40 oil, then start the engine and let the oil warm up to at least 160F. Once at temperature, check the oil level while the engine is running and add oil as necessary. DO NOT OVERFILL.

Javier Hernandez - mixing a 9 foot ceiling with a short guy and shorter car makes it work pretty good (I had that setup in the last house). Certainly the higher ceiling is better, but this can work if your not sticking an F250 up there!

Dan, there's a thread on FerrariChat by AZLambo, from Oct 2015 called, "DIY oil change made easy " Basically, since all three drains plugs drain straight down, he modified the plastic under-tray to create 3 drain holes and removable rubber plugs. Since you're no longer in warranty, might make an interesting future video doing that mod, since this way is such a PITA.
@normalguysupercar

David Grant , AZLambo here! Yep, by hole-sawing out the three, 3” holes in the undertray, and putting in the three 3” rubber “plugs”, changing the oil on my 458 is a piece of cake! No undertray panels to remove!

This is the video we all have been waiting for since you bought the 458! Next time, you may want to lubricate the o-ring with fresh oil (Standard procedure for similar oil canister on Gallardos). I am not sure if the o-ring requires lubricant for the 458 (Perhaps it’s a special Ferrari taxable compound), but I would put oil on the o-ring and be careful not to over tighten the canister (oil on the canister to engine interface increases joint axial preload when applying a given torque). Apologies for my nerdiness, another awesome video Dan!

Maserati twin turbo V6 oil change interval is 12K also, but since it's direct injection I change oil every 8K to 9K to reduce the likelihood of excessive carbon buildup on the intake valves. I do my own oil changes so it's cheap enough. I don't know if the 458 is direct injection but if so you may want to consider more frequent oil changes as well.

I think it's pretty cool that you are not afraid to do maintenance on your Ferrari. My only question is... how does this translate to when you want to sell the car? I was under the impression that these cars have a maintenance blog where maintenance is recorded by the dealership. Having a third-party mechanic or DIYing can depreciate the car's value when it comes to selling it.

Dan, do you leave the filler cap open whilst draining the oil? It seems to work better for me, as oil comes out more evenly and directed as opposed to sometimes when it is erratic and I end up making a mess

I unplug the dip stick so it's more restricted than the oil cap but doesn't glug.

Seems I am having some issue getting all of the old oil out of my 458. I opened and drained 3 plugs overnight. I put 8qts of the recommended Pennzoil in and my dipstick reads about an inch over the max line at the recommended check temperature. Anyone else experienced this?

My race car was leaking oil at a seal in the oil pump. With taking the oil pump off and putting it back on the car took 11 3/4 quarts of oil just to get to the first dot on the dip stick. Taking the oil pump out there seemed to be around 1-2 more quarts that came out compared to just draining the oil. What are your thoughts on that.. does that make sense to you? Everyone keeps telling me that the car is only 10qts.. But at 95c oil temps my oil level was at the first do.. cold the oil is about 3/4 up on the dip stick.

@@normalguysupercar Agreed. ha.. I imagine if your car typically takes 10qts on an oil change then taking the oil pump out would add an additional 1-2 qts when filling it back up. Have you ever put a full 10qts in on a change before?
