You really have to love a machine that can take whatever power you have at hand and that gets the job done. I really wish companies would still make machines like this.

What a neat machine, 161 years old and still working. The engine running it is 106 years old, the hand grinder has got to be old too. What a great episode with three of my favorite guys. Too bad I live in the middle of the USA and don't get around much anymore so thanks for taking me along.

That old planer is so wicked cool I can't even find the right words. Bone freaking simple and with care will still be making chips 160 years in the future. This, is why I love old machinery. If you take care of it it will outlast a dozen owners. No freaking plastic, no batteries, no whiz bang electronic crap, just plain old mechanical goodness. Thanks for the upload RoadKing.

I used to own one of those old grinders I can't remember the name but like alot of small hand powered machines of the day it was painted green that kind of almost crinkle green but it was smooth and the writing was a gold and red water transfer. I got it in a box of stuff at an auction don't know what happened to it probably left it on the farm.

It's pretty odd that he thinks a shaper is odd? Back in High School Machine Shop (1974-1976) one of the machines we learned to run was a shaper, as a matter of fact, the first job out of HS for me was a machine shop that made forging dies for industry. Besides sinking the impressions in the die blocks, upper and lower, the die blocks require a dovetail shank on their bottom to be able to be held in their respective power hammer. These die blocks were fairly large (2'x2') and required using a large enough planer to be able to machine the dovetails on both dies at the same time, afterwards each die would be held individually by its shank in a vise in what was a large shaper, this allowed the top face of the die blocks to be machined. Anyhow, this was my job for three years, 40 hours a week, before quitting and going off to college,, Needless to say, I became somewhat of an expert running both planer and shaper, which is why I found it somewhat incredulous when someone who supposedly interacts around machinery as a hobby doesn't recognize a shaper when he sees one?

I don't think that anyone makes shapers any more. Cincinatti was the last and the best. Modern milling cutters made them obsolete.
