Nice thing is that is one of Columbia's higher end motors for higher end machines. The lower budget motors with the wood base and tabletop models were the more inferior motors with the screw barrel caps and variations in spring sizes. Often those weren't worth rebuilding and more troublesome motors sadly
Please can i ask what makes the some early HMV motors noisey? I have an early hornless table top stamped LCO on the side and the motor was really bad with a loud rumble so i bought some new made springs for the governor and some new made weights and although it has quietened it down quite a bit there is still a rumble noise?? I have been told its due to the brass cog that is at the bottom of the spindle and the brass cog connects to the governor. I have gone over the motor numerous times and i can't see anything obvious? The motor is very very clean and the double spring has been clean and serviced also the speed regulator has been set right too! The only disappointment i have is the rumble noise and would like to know how to reduce this more or where is the noise generated from?
I recently purchased a bluebird portable photograph it does play the tonearm seems to be really sloppy do they have rubber gaskets to make a more sturdy I also have some problems with the tonearm getting so heavy that it stops the record
A Grafonola from 1920 or so I have one from 1915, noisy but it works, actually it's not that noisy, speed regulator is a little off, but that's no big deal as long as I can set the correct speed.
Hey, I have a Victrola Talking Machine VV-300. When I try to play record, it slows down to a stop when I place the needle on it to play. Can you tell me what's going on with that? Does it not have enough torque to turn the turntable? Is the needle putting too much drag on it?
I couldn't find and any manual on your website for Saal motors type EE. I have one currently on a 1908 silvertone record player that doesn't slow down when playing record. Figure it must be the fabric missing to slow down record. Do you do repairs.
The speed of these spring motors is controlled by the governor. A fabric/felt pad rubs against the governor to adjust the speed. Your pad may be worn out a replacement can be easily fabricated.
