Friendly tractor pull to help tune tractors for the competitions later in the year. John Deere R, John Deere D, John Deere A, John Deere AR, Farmall M, Farmall 406 #johndeere #tractor #tractorpulling #farmall #antique
Thanks for showing us the secret on that D. I couldn’t believe how well it pulled. Then when you showed that hidden hitch up there it made perfect sense! Clever design!
It's also got custom pistons that raise the compression ratio from 3.8 (or whatever low compression ratio the D is) up to 8 ish. (I didn't know the exact numbers). They even had to mill channels down into the sides of the pistons so they could extend father up toward the top of the cylinder and boost the compression higher.
They do alright. One tractor that usually does really well in a Farmall M. Especially when you get the weight distribution right, they'll pull with the best Deere all day.
That D was stout! Back in the day, the first overhaul was to get the compression up. They would really come alive. I have a '45 & '49, twin pipes and high compression on the '49.
Yeah, it is a pretty fun tractor to be around. I like how he throttles down before he pulls the clutch... As if to say, this is nothing, I could pull this all day!
Back when I got out of high school and went to college for tech trades I had a machining class where one of the primary instructors was an old machinist that was into old tractors and the like. One thing we learned how to do machining on was making gearsets to replace old worn-out ones for old tractors, trucks and steam engines. One hot 'nonstock' item we made was a specially cut rear drive gear that went in certain old John Deere tractors that had 1 tooth less than the stock gear but held nearly the same diameter via a nonstandard tooth geometry. It was a cheater gear for the JD slow racers to get a little more reduction in the rear end than the stock tractors had, but on a rare visual inspection through the oil filler hole with a small mirror and flashlight, looked like it was stock. 😋
Love that JD 2-Cyl. sound. My maternal Grandpa had a D and always wished my Dad had bought it when Grandpa quit farming. He also had a Allis Chalmers WD45. We had a JD G, Ar, Br and a Ferguson TE 20 (i think it was). So, i spent a lot of time on the G mostly, when not in school, growing up on the farm.
At fairs and pulls people that don't know tractors always look at me weird when I go to start my 820. They see all the other John Deere s popping away, and then see a big 820 and hey hear the pony fire up, and they are like that's not what thought it would sound like. Then I start the diesel that's straight pipes and they usually step back a few steps....
Excellent video Jonelstar :) also tractors you have get in pulling is that Oliver one have and if find one a Cockshutt 35 or 40 with Buda 6 cylinders motor with 1 barrel carb updraft and great tractors to trying out! Also be amazing I seen them at fair many years ago and impressive me lots on pulley contest!
BIL has 1955 70. Trying to pull a subsoiler, spun out all the time. Moved the drawbar from long, curved up to shortest curved down. Walked out like nobody else!
Where are they now? What would all those Engineers who designed and built these machines be thinking about what we've got nowadays? Would be sooooh proud of the folk keeping the old ones still goin. ... but no other red or green models around ? Thanks for the video grtgs from Scotland
the steering post needs 2 be rebuilt and the front wheels need 2 rebuilt also W new wheel bearings and races thats the only way 2 fix that the way it should be fixed if U dont fix it it will never get done 😮😮 and now the weather changed 4 the worst its already again U will need a good 3 speed barrel fan that moves plenty of air 😊😊 the front tires should be trye and straight no flopping from side 2 side 😊😊 OMG 6 18 2O24
U W 😊😊 the john deere D tractor 🚜 😊 why did U stop U shouldve kept going 2 see how far the tractor 🚜 😊 would pull the sled it will make its own new track let it pull the sled on through the next field and in 2 the woods on the other side CUZ 😊😊 OMG 6 18 2O24
Yes, they've tuned in the engine too. Still stock rods, block, and heads. Not sure about the cam. But they've put a taller piston in it to boost the compression ratio a lot. They even had to mill a groove in the piston to clear the spark plug.
