We who love old things from the past are truly "antique whisperers"! Beautiful or ugly, valuable or just fun, vintage wares tell us a lot about the people who came before us and how they lived...and sometimes, they reveal hidden truths and uncover mysteries that we only learn and understand when we look at them together and reveal the truth.
This weekend's appraisal fair in Centralia, Washington stands to be fascinating, if last year's is any indication! From Victorian engravings with hidden signatures to Staffordshire cows that hid their true origins, we find lots of ambiguities that we seek to uncover as we talk about the valuables people have hidden in their homes. A collection of Presidential items from a confidant of Jackie Kennedy, a sign from an English ship that sank under mysterious circumstances in Oregon and artifacts from Native Americans rescued from a watery grave are a few of the things on tap in this video, as we try to find the truth about their origins, and what makes them special today.
One friend tells us the true identity of the stones in a semi-precious amulet, while a family descended from immigrants ponders why their Italian ancestors hid their background behind a classic Canadian bar sign. We puzzle over a $350 bronze statue that sold for just $5, and marvel at a great gathering of other heirlooms that tell us so much about what people prized in the past, all while revealing how much those prizes are worth to us today!
We invite all our Northwest antique fans to join us this weekend for the annual appraisal fair, where many more stories will be told and many new mysteries will come to light!

I met George in Louisville at a flea market. He stopped what he was doing just to talk with me and took a genuine interest in our conversation. Not many people left like that. Thank you, George! Love your stuff and energy!

Good evening, George. Loved the R S Prussia chocolate set. Having eight cups and saucers is not easy to come by. They were so easily broken. I've seen six cups and saucers, in the _Reflecting Waterlilies_ pattern, go for $750.00, without a pot. The Staffordshire cow figure is something I wouldn't mind having. I really liked that piece. The bronze statue, of the lady with the lyre, was fantastic. As usual, there were a lot of really interesting items brought to be appraised! I really enjoy the appraisal fairs!

You weren't the only one to mention the RS Prussia, I think porcelain is so inexpensive now that it's attracting new interest as it should. Reflecting Waterlilies is one of my favorite of their patterns! I thought you'd appreciate the cow, it was surprisingly special, and the bronze was such a steal! I am always fascinated by how much neat stuff people have in their homes.

@@TheAntiqueNomad The R S Prussia _Reflecting Waterlilies_ pattern, on the icicle mold, is my favourite...and likely the most sought-after combination. Even now, those pieces don't go any too cheaply. Mom had a choco set in the _Reflecting Waterlilies_ pattern, on the icicle mold, and I wish it was still here. She sold all of her R S Prussia - every piece of it - when we were getting ready to combine houses. Every bone in me almost disjointed when I found out she had sold it 😂 Staffordshire did an amasing job capturing a "moment in time", with that cow piece. I grew up with my grandparents having a milk cow, and so many aspects of that piece were very true-to-form. That bronze fits my aesthetic perfectly. It has class and was done in good taste. That was, indeed, a steal on it! It is fascinating to see what people have collected! It's always fun to see them react if something they bring, to be appraised, turns out to be a true treasure, too.

Eat at berryfield's restaurant about the only one in the area anymore. Last time I was there the antique stop shop used to be in the bottom of the restaurant and it had moved. I was so sad because it had been there for so long and had so many good memories. Used to be a full Fenton store on the same floor where the restaurant is. Had beautiful Fenton glass in it. Hundreds of pieces. All gone.😢

As for the hanging mirror in Victorian print - it is drawn correctly. Mirrors were expensive, so people could not afford to break them. They used to hand them very high, not to knock it down, or scrath it. So in order to look at oneself in the mirror - it was place hanging at an angle from the wall - and you could see your whole body in it. This mirror placement was very common in Tsar Russia and is still used in museums to display paitings
@TheAntiqueNomad

That's interesting! I never imagined hanging it from such a high rail, that is good to know and needs to be shared with a bunch of historic homes that are not displaying it that way.

Love, love, love the appraisals!!! Love the story of Jackie Kennedy. I had 3 Jackies in my middle school of about 150 total students including boys. So Sad about the price drops on the porcelain chocolate set. Very sweet and amazing condition given the age. So sad that people are selling their family memories but times are tough and i know, for myself, I don't have a lot of room. ❤❤❤😊

22:00 I always called them RPR - random pretty rock. Lots of agates and jaspers have names, but price-wise most aren't worth a pile. Carnelian isn't really agate. It's solid orangey-red. The green one is bloodstone jasper, minues the red spots it's supposed to have. The last one chrysocolla is about right. (retired jewelry dealer just showin' off a bit.) THe metal looked like a nickel alloy.

I've noticed the RU-vid thrifters and antiquers shy away from native American merch. Is this because of that whole cultural appropriation stuff? Or is it posting it online for sale and the websites don't like that? I'm a fan of southwestern pottery.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Месяц назад
No, I think it's because they don't know the category well. Kat the Nurse Flipper sells it sometimes though, and so do I! Since a lot was sold to tourists in the first place, I figure it's more cultural diffusion than appropriation
@LauraMe...
@LauraMe... Месяц назад
I'm not an expert, but what I've read and noticed is that there are a lot of tribes, in Mexico and the US. Because so much of it was made for sale to travelers and such that means theres more on the market which means lower prices and profits. So the big money is in bigger pieces which are harder to ship so more risk. The other thing I've read about is the fakes or modern reproductions. I know Southwest themes were popular in the 80s and its coming around again and there are. Lots of knock offs in retail now. However its easy to tell they are not pottery but ceramic. I like the Mexican pottery too but in researching i found the Pueblo Storytellers and now I'm learning more about the Native American pottery makers

There is a ship on ships nostalgia with the name Cairnsmore, launched in Liverpool 1884, but stranded in Brasil which confuses me. And if you look on the photo of that ship that sign could have been the ships name on the body judging by the size.

The price of bronze sculpture is tragic. There is absolutely no way that you could buy that today new for such a pittance. I’m not sure why glass is so much more collectible being that it’s mearly glass.
