I adore this work, and this superb conductor. I heard Günter Wand conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Bruckner's 8th symphony at the Royal Albert Hall, back in 1992. It was one of the greatest musical memories I have. It was transcendental.

The finale of this symphony is rocking my world right now. I love the part from 1:09:52 to 1:10:37 so much. I just can't control myself from excitement and start "conducting".
I saw Günter Wand conducting this symphony with the BBC SO at the London Proms sometime in the 1990s. He had to conduct sitting down but it was so wonderful I just wanted it to go on forever. RIP Maestro Wand. You might have been grumpy, bad tempered, rude and prone to cancel at the last minute but with the possible exception of Eugen Jochum you were the greatest conductor of Bruckner's music who ever lived.
For the longest time I had felt that the video of Claudio Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra was the finest and most characteristic performance of this symphony that I had ever heard and seen. I still admire that rendition enormously, but for me Gunther Wand and the NDR here surpass even that version. I am astonished and grateful for this video. Thank you NDR Klassik!
i have just started to listen to Bruckner...my, this tkes me into an altogether different world....some kind of miraculously earth bound version of the celestial world LVB was describing....
Wand and Bruckner belonged to each other. How I miss his renditions and the excitement he could cause in his very modest way. I had the privilege to experience him live with Bruckner 8. A day I will always remember.
Gunter possesses the magic Wand for deciphering all of the many modulations happening throughout Bruckner's Fifth Symphony and makes sense of them for the listener. Has any other conductor understood this music better than he does? Tremendous performance by the orchestra, great sound engineering and wonderful camera work.
First: didn’t know that Hermann van Veen plays the double bass in Hamburg... ;) second: if you compare this with Celi’s recording, this is soooo much better. Thanks a lot!
What a magnificent performance of this wonderful symphony! The continuity is comprehensive. I love the way the woodwind tone qualities perfectly compliment each instrument and excel in both solo and tutti passages. The clarity of articulation, balance, blend and intonation in the brass could not possibly be better. The string sound in the second movement just after the pizzicato passage finishes is absolutely soul stirring.
Heureux musiciens ! Heureux public ! Bravo et merci!
Thank you for posting this magnificent performance of this sublime symphony. Bruckner brings us to the Gates of Heaven! Maestro Wand was surely one of the finest conductors of modern times.
BRAVO!!!
A thoroughly distinguished performance of the Bruckner Fifth Symphony. Gunter Wand and the NDR set a standard. One that others should strive for. I attended a performance of the Bruckner Fifth Symphony led by Gunter Wand when he was a guest-conductor for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Never to be forgotten! And likely not to be equaled in any of our lifetimes....
There is no equal to this finale, not even in Gunther Wand's own studio recordings. It simply cannot be matched, the precision of the trumpets and perfection of the tempo!
Herzlichen Dank! Günter Wand löste eine wahre Bruckner-Begeisterung aus! Wenn Sie mehr wissen wollen ... -> www.ndr.de/orchester_chor/elbphilharmonieorchester/Anton-Bruckner-Guenter-Wand-und-das-NDR-Elbphilharmonie-Orchester,bruckner146.html
The mental comfort of Bruckner‘s symphonies is irreplaceable The Bruckner‘s symphonies of Gunter Wand will reach the stage of spiritual awakening after getting a delusion out of one‘s head.
Superb performance. Very good playing throughout. Can't be much better! This is especially demanding for the brass, who must have strength left for the final chorale section. Fantastic solo hornist, razorsharp woodwinds, rich, warm and precise strings. And of course magnificently conducted by maestro Wand, who manages to keep up the energy throughout the long sections, always well balaced and with feeling for the whole structure. With that said, this is for me the least enjoyable of Bruckner's symphonies. It's a real patchwork of themes and sections with no real organic flow. It stops and starts all the time. Even in the scherzo he works with two different tempos, that disturbs the flow of the music. Of course all is masterly planned and held together, but lacking those really beautiful, gripping or memorable melodies, that Bruckner otherwise has in all his symphonies. This is so intellectual, so serious, so technically focused, that he forgets the humour, the warm feeling, the organic flow. I feel that it is more a summary of all his contrapuntal and orchestrational skills than really good music. A "masterwork" made as his own exam, to himself and to God, in competition with Bach, Beethoven and perhaps Wagner. After that he could relax, and made his four real masterpieces, symphonies no 6, 7, 8 and 9.
I agree with you about the patchwork nature of the first three movements, but I think the Fifth's Finale contains "the humor, the warm feeling, the organic flow" that you admire in Bruckner's music. It is a real crowd-pleaser. For me, the follow-on Sixth Symphony has the opposite problem: The stunning first two movements and a mysterious dream-like Scherzo, but ultimately a disappointing Finale marred by too many herky-jerky stops and starts, as well as the completely non-organic tacking on of the first movement's first theme to conclude the symphony. But yes, Anton got everything right in his fully mature 7th, 8th and 9th Symphonies, and his youthful 4th Symphony holds together well as a complete statement. It is an inspiration to me that over the past fifty years, Bruckner went from an unrecognized status to being fully integrated into the performing symphonic repertoire. He's obviously a big hit with the North Germans.
@@annakimborahpa Oh! I had almost forgot that I wrote this, and wondered what you had responded to. And I can agree that the finale in no 5 has more flow than the rest. And also think that the finale of no 6 is weaker than the rest of the symphony. That's a pity. But I think it was David Hurwitz who actually liked the finale of 6 and could explain its qualities, so now I can look at it more positively than before.
@@larsjohansson7954 The Finale of the 6th is still mature Bruckner which says a lot, but he perfected the juxtaposing of themes and tempos in the abbreviated Finale of the Seventh. I consider the 7th as a whole to be the best Bruckner symphony and the three movements of the 9th the best incomplete Bruckner symphony. Gunter Wand considered Bruckner to be the most important symphony composer after Beethoven. For me, Bruckner's experimentation, particularly in form, opened the door for later innovators of the symphony like Mahler, Sibelius, Nielsen, Vaughan Williams and Shostakovich.
@@annakimborahpa Agree totally. But no 8 is still a masterpiece and more monumental than the 7th. Yes, it took time for Bruckner's music to be appreciated widely, but today he has gained status as one of the greatest symphonists. I also like both no 1 and 0 very much. They are ligher and shorter, but well wtitten and proportioned. I prefer them before 2, 3 and 5, which I find the most problematic among Bruckner.
New objectivity, clear, natural and overwhelming Bruckner's Symphony No.5. The polyphonic movements of each instrument are presented crisply, clearly, and sometimes with great force. These sounds of the north in summer are profound, strong and clear. Each instrument is organized and can be heard clearly. The counterpoint melody can be heard clearly and feels powerful at the fourth movement double fugue. After a flowing part, the climax is looked like a modern impressive huge temple that stands tall and strong with good visibility.
Wand macht dies richtig gut! ❤ Lässt alles atmen…keine Hektik! Nur Erhabenheit!
Manche fangen sogar schon früher an zu rennen: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jXAZ2R5DJk8.htmlfeature=shared&t=4661 (Grauenhaft! Bei Thielemann geht's drunter und drüber...)
If it were not for Bruckner , our souls would have been wandering forever and we would not have reached the glory of God . There is something extraordinary in this performance From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
Bruckner was himself. He Put Into notes what He percived, and all. He did Not Imitate anybody. At his Lifetime, though, He partially was loughed at. Excuse my Bad English.
It is our highly revered former chief conductor Günter Wand. In particular his Bruckner interpretations were groundbreaking. If you would like to know more, please visit our Website (in german): www.ndr.de/orchester_chor/Der-Mann-mit-der-Alterskarriere,guenterwand106.html
