Al Michaels: ...incomplete. We're getting, he made the catch at the 15, what are they going to rule, that he caught it?! Touchdown!...HE DID WHAT?! Joe Buck (if he was announcing): Incomplete. No, caught. Touchdown Packers. that's why Al Michaels is a great announcer.
Is it just me (or my headphones), or does anyone else hear the woman in the background (1:42) who sounds like she's being eaten alive by a million fire ants!?
It would be fun to be friends with Antonio Freeman in private life. If only because it'd be a fun game to try to see how often you could sneak "you did what" or "he did what" into day-to-day conversation without him noticing.
I was in the delivery room in Madison Wisconsin, Daughter #1 born on the Am of the 7th....I think I remember every Dad looking up to watch the replay again and again....
Lol I was bored and this play randomly popped in my head so I decided to watch it again. I was 12 when it happened and Rember being stunned at the time. Was an even greater play seeing it when it happened.
Best catch ever. You know the people saying Beckhams is better because it was skill, just proves the point of why it wasn't better. Now if they didn't show OB in pregame or at practice making that same catch minus falling backwards of course, that'd be different, he practices those kind of catches, you can't practice what Freeman did, the awareness and concentration to grab it inches from the turf, after its almost picked off. Then, the wherewithal to get up, put a move on the defender trailing the play, and scoot into the end zone
so because he practices catching the ball, anytime he makes an unbelievable play it's somehow less of a catch? No, you can't practice what Freeman did, because it was luck. Other than being aware enough to reach his arms out and grab a ball dangling in mid air, hardly any skill. OB's was nothing but skill. These two plays aren't even comparable.
This one is one of the greats, but my favorite Al Michaels call was actually in a preseason game. The Broncos had just put their 3rd and 4th string in on offence. Al Michaels: "And this is the point where they put guys out there so they can try and impress other teams" *Broncos QB proceeds to throw an interception* Al Michaels: "And that will impress no one..."
Thanks for posting this. Al Michales’ reaction is great. I was at the game and didn’t hear his reaction until it was posted online. Almost everyone thought the play was dead, but a few of us noticed the there was no ref whistle, so it was probably still alive.
Everyone sharing their memory of where they were even though this happened almost 15 years ago, just tells you all you need to know. My memory was taking a dump at a waffle house in Florida and heard a loud roar outside the bathroom. I thought the place was being robbed.
One of my college roommates had just finished saying his fantasy football team was nationally ranked and, with this win, was going to be shown on the ESPN FF rankings... ...the only thing that could beat him now would be a Favre to Freeman touchdown.
Damn Al Michaels is at least a top 3 all-time announcer. He adds enough emotion to make it entertaining and memorable but doesn't scream like Gus Johnson and ruin the entire moment
Brian Dawkins I love commentators with emotions, but Gus Johnson's constant screaming and shouting gets annoying. It's over-the-top, but I guess it's all subjective
+86SuperRay - Or sometimes it's unintentionally hilarious, like Joe Starkey (another all-time great broadcaster). I can remember him shrieking "IT'S INTERCEPTED! IT'S INTERCEPTED!" so many times LOL.
This is the best play I've ever seen live with my own two eyes. (The Beast Mode run by Lynch against the Saints is a very close 2nd) I don't like the Packers at all, especially back when Favre was QB, but this catch is nothing short of fucking amazing. I remember staring at my TV after this play in pure wonder and unbelief.......
I was watching the Super Bowl and thinking the same thing, that the "catch" in that game does not even come close to Antonio Freeman's. It did remind me of his slightly but the way Antonio got up and left everyone behind was like poetry in motion.
Sometimes, there are truly perfect moments of sound from one source syncing up with video from another source, including 0:15 between Freeman riding up and Al Michaels going "He did WHAT?!"
Still remember staying up late with my dad watching this game when I was like 13 and couldn't believe it. You know its a good play when 10+ years later you remember the exact memory of what you were doing when it happened.
Same. I was 12 and I still remember we first groaned at the apparent drop, then we saw Freeman get up and run in and we were both cheering and in disbelief that he caught the ball. The shot of the ref laughing at the play was what I remembered the most about that
Beckham can thank his sticky gloves. Antonio Freeman's catch was just great awareness. Most receivers in that situation wouldn't of even to of relocate the football after falling down,
Very true this was a great grab even though I hate the packers I must admit that, but ODB Jr.'s catch was just a pure catch. Not knocking Freeman's grab, but Beckhams Jr.'s was better.
Unparalleled level of awareness. Freeman, Favre, Desmond, Reggie, Rison (for a few games)...The Packers were the most exciting team in the league at this time...not even a distant second.
Kind of the norm seeing the Vikes blow another lead like this. It is actually nice to see the Pack choke as they did in the NFC championship this year. Packer fans do not handle it well, however. Not to mention, go back and look and some of Cris Carters catches during his career - I'm sure Carter had some spectacular catches as well. #GoBackHome!
That catch cost The Vikings a Super Bowl. They were unbeatable at home and lost home field advantage because of this loss. The Giants crushed them 41-0 in The NFC Champ game in New York. All because the idiot DB didn't pay attention and was celebrating.lol
Look, I'm a lifelong Vikings fan but you can't say losing 41-0 in the title game was because they had to play on the road. If that was true, the Super Bowl would have been a disaster too since it wasn't played in the Metrodome.
If I remember correctly the Vikings were still favored in the NFC championship even though they were on the road, so they just played that game poorly, if anything.
I remember watching this game a few days after my birthday after getting out of foot surgery. Nurses thought something was wrong because i was screaming, but I was just really excited about the catch. I miss the old packers and the gunslinger
"Here's the snap. Farve, drops back, looks deep, he's got Freeman... and it's incomplete. So now the Pa- or, wait, no, the play wasn't ruled dead, Freeman's still going! That's gonna be a walk-off touchdown! Absolute insanity at Lambeau! The play was never ruled dead, and... How on earth was Antonio Freeman able to make that catch?!? That is unbelievable!!"
0:03 Al Michaels: Farve... lays it up for Freeman, and it's incomplete. Or did he cat-- he made the catch at the 15? What are they going to rule it, he caught it?! Touchdown! HE DID WHAT?!
As a Viking fan I immediately though of this play after the Super Bowl catch. Fortunate for the Patriots they didn't come out on the losing end like my team did, lol
Favre lays it up for Freeman and it's incomplete or did he make the catch at the 15 what are they going to rule it he caught it Touchdown HE DID WHATTT - I'ma just say that Al Michaels is one of the best commentators in NFL history that I know 💯
Cheezeburger Walrus Although his quote at the end of the game, "GET OUT THE BLOW DRYER; IT'S DONE!" was actually kind of clever. It was raining pretty hard in Green Bay that night. Many people were soaking wet. Therefore Miller's quote actually works well because the game was over and people could finally dry off.
Tyler Nersinger Actually the quote is something he came up with during the preseason. The full quote was to be "Start blow-drying Ted Koppel hair, because it's over!" After local news, "Nightline with Ted Koppel" was on ABC.
I think we're still wondering, even in 2018, how, in football heaven, did Antonio Freeman have the ware with all to catch the football off of Dishman's deflection and run it in for a touchdown? Most likely from Antonio's point of view it was like everything was going in slow motion and his hands just wrapped around the football for a split second like a Venus flytrap. Also, Al Michael's commentary on that play will be one of those sound bytes that define his legacy as a broadcaster.
a classic. what a gem for the ages. i hated the packers at the time but how can u not love this. i don't blame the announcers and crazed woman for hyperventilating! lol
I remember it, very memorable, something like Joe Theismanns broken leg, Bo Jackson's 221 yards on Monday night, or when Don Bebe ran down Leon Lett and poked the football out of his arms at the one yard line.
I know everybody hated Dennis Miller as a commentator (and so did I) but it is funny to hear him cracking up about it, and since I'm a Pack guy myself I can't hate him too much.
I like how Freeman just kept on running. Usually when wierd things happen and the guy knows he caught it, he jumps around trying to tell everybody he caught it. Freeman said hmmmmm I caught it I'm runnin lol!
I remember being like 12-13 my brother 15, my team was GB Packs his was MIN, that was one of the great moments ahah, Favre vs Culpepper.. what a great era
