The 225 is the largest aircraft ever made that has actually entered service. It's sister ship is still awaiting restoration, although I believe there are plans to do so since the first has been such a huge success commercially. It is the aircraft originally built to carry the Soviet space shuttle and needed extensive restoration after the abandonment of the project with the collapse of the Soviet Union, hence the hard-points on the roof (faired in on this video, and always when they are not in use). So you haven't seen a bigger one, as there is no bigger one, and this is the only flying example. It does have a "little" brother, the 124 (from which it was developed).
OAK TWR: "Antonov, runway 30, clear to land wind 2..." Antonov: "Is there a tornado going on right now?" OAK TWR "ah, no sir..." Antonov: "So I don't care about windspeeds..."
@@vegasgirl3538 To be fair, it's somewhat of a rare and once in a lifetime occurance to see that thing. My mom used to work at our local airport and we had that beast land, I immediately asked for all the pictures she can manage since I was working when it would arrive.
The pilot is Ukrainian. He has a Ukrainian passport and citizenship. The USSR collapsed 27 years ago, there are no such old and active captains for AN-225.
@@vetsup I know its a way of russian, or anyway, eastern pilots to talk that way. The many times I flew with aeroflot and belavia (russian and belarussian companies) pilot announcements sounded the same way.. Don't know if it is taught to them this way or is they just talk this way on the radio...
Monete they probably talk that way because English is so different from any Slav language that they either don’t know or don’t have a way to accurately translate any emotion or colloquialism into their radio communications. They just use what the international standards teach them for their CPLs.
@@neline6708 they were plans over the years to build a second with parts of it being built but it was designed with more modern systems than the Mriya they have said they want to build another but even if the war ended tomorrow with more hope of travelling to another galaxy than the next part of this sentence Russia footing the bill to rebuild everything. It would still be decades before they would be in a position to be able to build another least of all afford to be able to. By which time is there going to be a market for its services if there is will it be the only aircraft or will competitors have stepped in prior to fill the gap. I do still hope they build another but I think there is more chance of Putin joining the pineapple scene in Little Nicky with the world's largest pineapple being selected for him. I am still hoping on both accounts
Love how the controllers just rerouted everyone to see it. Just imagining all these grown ass professionals radioing in with some version of "but I wanna see big plane!" And the controllers just casually changing landing patterns and shit
Oakland is chill like this almost always... I have flown GA in and out of Oakland a bunch of times with a family friend who used to take me to and from where I went to university in Oregon near his second house - he'd always offer a ride up or down as he loved having someone to shoot the shit with. once in a while he'd let me talk to oakland tower, and taught me a bunch of aviation comms, and the ATC in OAK was always so chill and easy to work with - super professional too.
Three words Kerbel Space Program, build your own plane/rockets and add EVERYTHING to it. 500 rocket engines, check. Big enough to launch and land a 225 (while in flight), check. Room for 50 luxury condos, check.
Great how all the air traffic controllers and other aircraft sound like kids in a candy store talking about the plane and then the 225 pilot comes on the radio like its just another day on the job yet still makes it sound like yea im bigger then you and everyone knows it lol
Ukraine is a great place to live with great people, there are a lot of Russians living there. But the stereotype is that Russians are typically nice people.
@@failtolawl that's a false stereotype. Ask ones who went on FIFA2018 champ in Russia. And yes, I'm russian. That's just another workday arrival for the crew.
I also think railroad Engineers do the same thing when things like the Southern Pacific Daylight steam engine or Union Pacific steam engines past them on the rails. Personally I can't wait until Union Pacific gets finish rebuilding the big boy steam engine by next year.
@Karl Cuschieri I like all things machinery. Be they fly, run on Rails, traveled the oceans, or going to space. You can have machines that are nice and streamlined like a jet and enjoy it just the same as a Union Pacific Big Boy with all its gears and pipes and stuff on the outside. To me watching this plane land and take-off is the same as watching a steam engine go by or a big aircraft carrier.
This brings back story about how pilots (with years and years of experience) let Concorde ahead of them before going to land. Official excuse was that "Concorde use a lof ot fuel at low speed so has to go 1st" (which is true) but reason behind that was to enjoy these few amazing moments of this rare look on that beauty in action =))
I'm not a pilot but I'm interested in aviation and I watch a fair amount of videos about it, and I keep hearing, over and over, "if you have a special request, ask ATC, and if they can, they'll accomodate you. " (Of course, you have to be sensitive to things like congested airspace and peak times. The private pilots here lucked out, too, in that it was a quiet time at OAK when the Antonov came in.)
I saw the Antomov when it landed in Stockholm, Sweden. It was the day after the A380 landed for the first time so I was prepared that it was going to be big. It got bigger and bigger in my camera and I ended backing up into a fence. It is HUGE! I saw a follow me car guide it and it looked like a flea guiding a goose. Impressive! Just a few days short off my birthday so I was extremely happy for that early gift. Side note: My bus got cancelled and I arrived late at work, for the first time ever. My boss just asked me: did you enjoy the airplane? Hahaha.
I used to work at EFHK and saw the 225 couple times and I was there when the Lufthansa A380 landed to try IF they could turn around :D That was sweet, I mean your everyday 757 looked like an ant next to the 380.
I owned an DSLR without video recording back then. I know a few people filmed it though since they were standing next to me. I'm sure I've seen it on youtube.
Listen to the "LA story" by a retired Blackbird driver, they pretty much bring a ground speed check contest to a screeching halt in the most badass way possible. And knock a Navy Hornet pilot down a few pegs in the process.
It is a plane like a child whos mom disappeared in 1993 and only aunt Ukraine could save him from starvation. His brother is still in garage unfinished. An225 will disappear as his motherland. That destiny is really really sad(
I love how all the pilots and the ATC were excited about the Antonov like little kids, and are all requesting for a chance to see the giant plane, all the while the ATC was telling everybody about it and trying to give everybody a chance to see it. This is wholesome. 😌😁❤
@@skeletongold3890 Yeah, that's what I want my pilot to know. Fuck V speeds, weight and balance, emergency procedures, etc. Obviously, knowing what aircraft is the biggest is more important.
I´m not a pilot or any flying pro, but as far as I know, the bigger the plane, the more help it gets from the so-called "ground effect" during landing. But otherwise I agree: Nice landing it was.... :)
Yea creates a lot of lift when it's that close to the ground, I'm no pilot either haha. But that pocket of air under the plane when it's about to touch down probably helps a bunch.
Also its so cool that even the other pilots and the tower are as excited as little boys to see it and that the tower is also approving flybys. That's just awesome :D
So cool, 99.999% of everyone's lives on comms here is boring and routine - it's nice to hear the enthusiasm come out universally, reminds us that at the end of the day this is your dream job and we're all just little kids pointing at the big airplane lol.
AWESOME! I wish I was one of these flights circling above the Antonov :D Earlier this year it came to the Berlin ILA Air Show and I went to the cockpit of this beast!
You lucky bastard. I "only" once witnessed it flying above my house. I didn't know the takeoff time so I wasn't prepared, at some point I just heard some massive noise of an aircraft I didn't recognize the sound of and I saw this huge bird right there :D
I think I've spotted this Antonov once from the _ground_ by sheer luck. I had just bought my new camera which came with like 30-something optical zoom. I pointed it up to see how close I could get to the planes above. When reviewing the photo, I realised it had 6 engines and what appeared to be 2 tails. I didn't know anything about planes so I started looking it up, and to my surprise the only plane that came close to the silhouette that I photgraphed. If anyone's interested I can post the image online somewhere.
*PING* Ladies and gentlemen, due to bruh moment magnitude 9 there'll be delay on our landing. Meanwhile we will do a circle near the airport so you can enjoy the *BIG CHUNGUS*
I like how every time it lands and takes off they have to inspect the runway , taxiway , signs, etc... Truly tells you how massive and heavy this thing is!!
I feel like the transmissions in this video were a lot more comprehensible compared to most other ATC conversations that I've watched keep up the great work VASAviation!
I paid to tour the 225 back in the early 1990's when it flew into KBDL for a few days while it was on a publicity tour. They bussed everyone in from the parking lot and when we got to the aircraft it had not yet been opened. everyone got off the bus and they were just starting to open the nose and there a noticeable sound of a pop. A hydraulic leak had occurred in the nose lifting mechanism. I have pictures of red hydraulic fluid sprayed all over the concrete. More than anything else - the landing gear was what impressed me the most.
Hi. I'm ATC from Kyiv FIR, where Antonov 225 flies the most. And never heard on frcy such excitement. Other a/c just don't give a f*, when beast is nearby)
Listening to this and thinking about what happened to this aircraft. If it doesn't make you choke up inside as a pilot or an aviation geek and I'm not ashamed to admit I'm one, you no longer have a soul. This aircraft reminded everyone of why they became a pilot, got involved in aviation in a support role, or just find themselves looking up anytime they hear something overhead. Hopefully one day they will rebuild it, make it better so we can experience this once more. I know I'm not the only one that hopes that happens
Good news is Ukraine has stated that they're going to rebuild her. I saw her back in the late '90's or early '00's. Absolutely beautiful aircraft and when I saw her she was carrying... I think it was 16 ambulances, I remember a few coming off or going on. The scale of it just blew my mind.
As boys grow older, their toys get bigger. The ATC sounds like a small boy who's excited to show off the big toy landing on his backyard to all the neighborhood boys. 😆
It’s being repaired now due to a front landing gear collapse after landing. They have also decided to finish the second 225 that was canceled in the 90s but was halfway complete.
I was fortunate to see the Antonov in flight, and man, what a beast! The 747 is my favorite plane, and this thing made a 747 look like the space shuttle. I was working at a company on Lake Union in Seattle (the lake's between Puget Sound and Lake Washington) and was taking out my recycling. I saw something big and white out of the corner of my eye and turned and -- words can't describe. It was amazing!! I used to live next to a SAC airbase, and this plane also made B52s look like the space shuttle!
I work overseas and my company uses the Antonov to deliver supplies from the states to where we work. All the times I have seen this Aircraft, which is in the terms of dozens, I never thought it was a big deal until now. Lol great looking aircraft, especially when you stand right next to it!
I've seen the AN-225 irl and it's a beautiful aircraft. It was on the Boeing launch airfield here in Everett while I was on a tour and it was amazing. They actually paused our tour momentarily to watch the plane as it departed. A beautiful sound
Disregard. Turns out the aircraft I saw was the An-124. Still it's really cool, as it's the largest military transport aircraft. It's discontinued from the Russian Air Force, and it's now a cargo plane. It was delivering engines from Ohio to the Boeing factory. I just thought I remembered some sort of yellow
Just now watching this oldie, but goodie!! Totally awesome!! Wow! to see that would be unbelievable!! Thanks for posting this. I have saved this video! 💕✈💕✈
The little brother of this, the AN124 made a couple deliveries here to CYQT direct from Austria for the Bombardier factory. It looked even bigger because the airport is much smaller than Oakland. I was surprised it didn't dig up the whole runway landing that thing. The crew went down well here, they had a fun time all over the city while the cargo was being unloaded.
It was actually designed to land on other surfaces other than Tarmac, IIRC. With so many wheels, you distribute the weight of the aircraft over a much larger area which allows it to land and not tear the ground up underneath the tires.
Antonov: Manouver props engaged Tower: Examining diagrams Ground: Vehicle reporting Tower: I have the information Ground: Location confirmed Antonov: Closing on target Janitor: At least I have job
Yea, me too. But don’t be really sad about it. Ukrainians will build one more, im sure. They have unfinished project. Anyway, someday it should have happened.
Man, this video made my day. Seeing grown up man, working and talking in the radio as formally and professionally as only airplane pilots and ATCs need to, and "just" because the Antonov is around, everyone suddenly sound like kids in a candy store. Just amazing! Really made my day!
I've seen the 225 a few times here at LAS ... Never fails to amaze! However, I don't think our ATC folks would be as accommodating as the guys in OAK!!
I went to Denver Airport and this thing was parked facing the road. I thought it looked huge and then started counting engines. Saw it leave a trail of smoke when it took off later.
