Didn't Hetfield go to rehab because he was struggling with his alcohol addiction. Which in turn was ruining his relationship with his family?

Exactly. Also why bring up some sixteen year old documentary?
@rogeryounkin6999
@rogeryounkin6999 5 лет назад
That is correct. Considering that people still make fun of Dave mustaines drug history. He's clean too but I guess Dave mustaine and Megadeth don't seem to get that push because they aren't blowing up the charts as much as Metallica which sucks considering that I think Megadeth also has lots of great albums and music themselves

But according to lips he has no right to have problems and much less to record it let alone put it out there. XD mainly because James is successful. And also because it's taking the documentary spotlight away from anvil XD. Anvil is OK but the dude is crazy

They got no press in 2004. First time I ever heard of them was in 2005/06 on Blabbermouth which was a story about them having a documentary filmed about them, despite having released probably 10 records during the 90's/early 00's.

So James going to rehab is him whining and complaining. Yeah, he should've kept drinking, loose his family and who knows what would have happen with him after that. I love the James from the late 80's early 90's as much as the next guy, but it was the right decision to go sober.

Say what you want, but Lips does kind of have a point. Some Kind Of Monster makes them look like a bunch of pampered egotists disconnected from reality in some scenes. That being said, Lips LITERALLY bitches about how they didn't make it big in nearly every interview and he often comes across as incredibly bitter during many interviews, this coming from a big fan of Anvil btw. Anvil are genuinely a really fun band, great to see live, very energetic and genuinly in the moment. Lips very much lives for the stage. Metallica very much looked like they were going through the motions, especially during the time Lips is referencing. Robb Reiner is an AMAZING drummer too, very underrated. Not many people were playing double kicks like him back in the early 80's.

True, look at Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. Successful but they had their demons and couldn't overcome them. If anything it can make it worse for some with endless money to waste on substance abuse, crazy hours, isolation from family and more.

What Lips is failing to understand is that no matter how high you fly, no matter where you go...you’re always gonna be there with yourself. There are billionaires who are WAY less happy than the average working joe. Money and success don’t matter when you have personal issues. Just ask Layne Staley, Scotty Weiland, Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Peter Green, Syd Barrett...the list goes on forever. The only thing money TRULY allows you to do is stress out less about money. If you’re an alcoholic, if you have a bad self-image, low self-esteem, relationship problems...all of the money in the world can’t cure that. It’s a PERSONAL struggle. Some of these people’s personal struggles only increase once they’re in the public eye. Money doesn’t factor into personal equations...it just doesn’t.

Metal On Metal and Forged In Fire were genuinely decent records imo. You have to take into account this was pre 1984. Metal on Metal was in 1982. Listen to 666, you can't tell them those kicks locking in with the riff wasn't at least marginally influential on the thrash genre in general. That being said, Anvil were never destined to make it big, Lips is not a good enough singer and instead of capitalising on the thrash scene they helped spearhead, they took 5 years to release probably one of their worst albums (strength of steel). As old school speed metal acts go, bands such as Raven and Accept, Anvil are up there with the best of them.

They are a thrash/heavy metal band who started to bud at the same time, or earlier, than most of the “Big 4” playing the festival circuit in the early ‘80s. However they, for some weird reason, got the short end of the stick and underwent a series of unfortunate events, and then didn’t appeal to the masses as the other bands leapt over them, and it’s been that way since. The documentary is great even if it doesn’t make you a fan (I am personally not a huge fan of the genre but I appreciate it). However, his guy (Steve “Lips”) LOVES to rant. It’s this weird paradox where their infamy keeps them relevant.

Your summary was spot on. Regardless of your ‘success’, it doesn’t shield you from darkness. Some people take themselves out, James Hatfield is still here. As dark as that SKOM was, It’s essentially a human story. In many respects, it’s made me personally love the band even more.
@evergray5063
@evergray5063 Год назад
It made me lose all respect for them. Maybe that’s not the right phrase… Yes, they are just human beings who still deal with personal, emotional and psychological problems regardless of their wealth and success, I get that. But, growing up, like between the ages of maybe 9-14, Metallica was THE BAND. Their music was on a completely different level than any other band to me. Cliff Burton inspired me to play bass, Hetfield inspired me to learn guitar... Watching that movie essentially shattered my illusions, it was the epitome of “never meet your heroes“. Though I didn’t personally meet them, seeing grown men act like petulant children and whine, b¡t¢h & complain about EVERYTHING, when millions and millions of fans and musicians would give anything to be in their position really was hard to swallow. Again, it absolutely humanized them and you got to see and understand the actual PEOPLE behind this near mythological juggernaut that was Metallica, but even to this day, I hundredpercent agree with Jason Newstead when they asked him what he thought about A psychologist (psychiatrist?) literally sit in on the sessions so they could talk about their feelings every time someone didn’t like a rift or a lyric; he took a long pause and just said “… That’s weak”. End it was, it just came across as narcissistic, entitled, man-children Who never properly learned how to communicate having a mediator sit between them and hope he would tell whoever was doing the bitching that THEY were right. I’m glad I saw it in a way, but I would never watch it again

I’ve known about anvil since the mid 00’s I’ve watched the documentary, many vids and music. I was in bands, recorded at studios, I was in the music scene, I’ve seen small local bands get big. In my opinion the reason Anvil never got big was a few things the quality of their recordings were bad and they didn’t have a good producer to help make the songs better. If a producer like bob rock did an album with anvil back in the 80’s/90’s they would have been huge.

First off it wasn't even Metallica's idea to make the documentary they were approached by the filmmakers and agreed to it, 2ndly I would bet that any band that has been tg for 30+ years and tours more than just about any current artist there is will tell you that spending that much time around the same people will create that type of environment they were in at the time. 3rd Anvil doesn't know shit about what they are talking about bc they never made it to the level that Metallica has. He honestly sounds like a dude that just thinks all the fame and fortune is what it's all about bc he never got the fame nor fortune that that level of fame brings with it.
