Care is ALWAYS the first step and then the minor medications for calming but sometimes the only way to gain control is sedation - especially for physical agitation. It is the most difficult symptom to control but there are new meds out there that are really helpful - Rivastigmine patch that goes into the skin, Haloperidol "liquid needles" - a compounding liquid version that is absorbed through the skin - these for patients whom you can't get close to or are unwilling /unable to take oral medications.
