Thank goodness they made up for it a few years later by putting Dr. Crusher in a romantic relationship with a ghost-alien entity who dwells in a candle who was also banging her late grandma-- no wait, actually, that's even more terrifying as the bodies-sitting-up thing. Never mind...
@@zagnorch1336 "Night Terrors," "Sub Rosa," and the episode where Troi was turned into a salamander (and Worf into a targ) are among my top 10 list of TNG's cheesiest episode :)
riker's annoyance at picard ordering him to take a nap at 0:55 was a really nice touch, showing how his lack of dreaming was causing him to become irritable and short-tempered
That is fantastic! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I have been watching this episode since it first aired in the 1990's and I had never noticed that before! Say, this "Frakes" is a pretty good actor.
Ah yes, the episode that traumatized me as a kid... And hey, as an adult too! This episode showed that Star Trek can do horror better than most horror movies.
Well written horror doesn't need jump scares or a gross-out. Sometimes just the anticipation is enough, or the situation to make you uncomfortable even afterwards.
i really shouldn't watch these kind of things so late at night... picard's claustrophobic hallucinations scared the living daylight outa me and the paranoid atmosphere was really getting to me!
Picards elevator hallucination was messed up XD So like, what happens if the turbolift reaches the top of the tube, and the lift keeps accelerating? Your fucked son XD
I absolutely love the tonal whiplash when we go from Picard having a breakdown and Ryker seeing snakes, to the channels outtro and Brak going "I love beens digadoo!"
"Sir!" "Oh. Mr. Worf! Hello. I'm uh. Trying a new YOGA exercise to help with stress! I am happy to report that it is most effective!" "A *warrior's* Yoga!"
"A couple of times I've gone to my quarters and felt like there was someone else in there, waiting for me. I mean, that's normal. The odd thing is, there was no sexy lady waiting for me these times."
That's what I was thinking. When something is clearly affecting biological members of the crew, it makes sense, from a purely tactical position to place the android in command until it passes.
Isn’t that quite literally what he did when he asked Data into his ready room? Data basically runs things for the latter half of the episode and at the very end announces himself as acting Captain.
@@amd0824 I mean, I would have probably done so sooner, just to make sure data knew and my judgement wasn't being effected, but, also, I didn't remember the full episode when I commented that.
I had a moment like that just the other night. I was in bed, awake, and somehow saw and felt behind me, a wasp fly under my blanket and wedge itself under my back. I could feel it moving. It didn't exist of course, but I saw, heard and felt it.
Sounds like you had a sleep paralysis. It happens when the sensorical functions of the brain get awaik before the motorical functions. You're still unable to control your movemrent but see, hear etc the real room around you. Because of the confusion and the brain areas responsible for dreaming sometimes still active, hallucinations of phobias or shadowy people might occur. It only lasts a few seconds but its really terrifying. I was glad that I once heard about this phenomenon years before I experienced it for the first time and realised what was going on and calmed down. I can't image how terrible it must be without any previous knowledge.
@@SusScrofaBob I'm familiar with sleep paralysis, yeah, and I'd think it was that too, except that I wasn't paralyzed; I reacted as quickly as one would want to. Maybe somehow it still was.. but I dunno.
you can see a flash of genuine rage in riker’s eyes when picard puts him to bed. he swallows it so quickly but it’s undeniably there, and picard sees it too. his rationality wins out though and he realizes that if he’s having a reaction like that, he probably should get some sleep. this show is so weird because its so obvious about most things. but the character acting is really deep and subtle and there’s always more to find in their performances. it’s what keeps me coming back, more than even the writing. these are just exceptional actors.
2:20 I feel for Picard right here I cant help but laugh at the no, but he totally comes to his senses and you feel bad the dude was traumatized, and i wouldnt wanna be crushed by the trubolift XD
What about being humiliated in front of his subordinates? For months after, people probably got down on the floor of the lift curled up in a ball and began screaming "Nnnooooooo!" Right before the doors opened, to get a good laugh. 😄
That makes me think … did the Captain have a fear of small spaces when he was a boy? I always thought that these fears and hallucinations everyone was having were deep and/or old fears - things they didn’t share. Maybe the gun-blazing Cadet Riker was terrified of snakes and would never be caught dead saying that. Dr. Crusher always had that subtle idea that a dead patient would one day come back to harm her - or f*** me, Word’s near-death experience later! Warrior’s greatest fear - being too weak to fight the threat. I’m deadass convinced these are fears with much earlier origins than simply Starfleet trauma …
The tension as Picard walked out the elevator... he was so embarrassed even though he knew other people knew about the issues and everybody was having them. He was like "aight, you seem to be handling stuff here, if I'm not needed I best to just take some rest in my cabin..."
This episode, along with a few others, really highlighted how big and spooky the D was. Someone did the math and calculated that large sections of it would be mostly empty most of the time, given the crew compliment.
After watching this episode, I have been terrified at night. When I try to sleep, it feels like something was gonna jump out at me. I had to dig my ears into my pillow and corner myself against the wall to feel safe. This was, by far, the most terrifying thing I have ever seen on netflix
Did they... slightly delay the footage of Riker's reflection in the mirror in comparison to his real self? if so, that is a GREAT utilization of the fact that TV is recorded and not live! it totally got me. I couldn't figure out what was so creepy. at first I just assumed it was the intentional inclusion of his reflection by the writers to symbolize how Riker doesn't feel alone or safe even in his own quarters, but I actually do think its slightly delayed. just on the cusp of human perception, entering the subconscious mind, but eluding the conscious. really well done. and when he walks through the threshold of the door but still appears to be in the dark, while his doppelganger is lit up as if his reflection is actually another person. man I could go on about this scene for ages. SO GOOD. _This_ is a proper depiction of what severe paranoia feels like, for anyone who hasn't felt it before
What would have been great if Riker's reflection turned around to look back at him while he was looking back as well. Then become him again when he turned back around.
I never quit grasped this till about 6 years ago when I had a bad break up with a women I'd been with for 10 years. There was a few days where I hardly got any sleep and things started to feel like this.
2:08 Captain Picard's completely natural and perfectly understandable reaction to "Star Trek Discovery." BTW I loved how Picard did his best to save face in front of the bridge crew by doing his trademark uniform-straightening motion right after he rose off the turbolift floor. Then there's the whole deal with Riker hallucinating motherf*cking snakes in his motherf*cking bed, which gave me the impression that I'd seen something like this in another TNG episode that centered around Riker not getting enough sleep. Then I remembered that it was (SPOILER ALERT) the 6th-season episode "Schisms."

When I was in the military, I once worked a 36-hour shift as part of a deployment exercise. When I finally got back to my room, I was sleep drunk. My hands felt numb. And as I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, I swear I saw multicolored bats flying across the room. I always found these hallucinations to be very realistic.
You haven't taken any mushrooms yet. You are living a hallucination of your wishful thinking playing out. You have been trapped for -11 'real'time minutes, although 'real'world has actually deteriorated and your spirit's frequency has adapted to your phantasy so much that you are now basically an entity belonging to it. You are a self-contained, self-running imagination. The good news is that nothing is not.
Im sure he had fun as a teen But they have had mechanical failures before, what happens if the lift reaches the top of the tube. But keeps accelerating? Your fucked son XD Thank god it was a bad trip
@@sarahberkner you mean the same Picard who fought 3 narsikin and took a blade in the heart? The same one who was tramping with 2 different women? And drank openly in bars Didn't smoke weed, or something like LSD or acid? Alright. I'll buy that for a dollar
Under those circumstances, I would not go back to my quarters to sleep, I would go to sick bay, where I would not be alone, and where I would be within arm's reach of a doctor if these "effects" suddenly caused me to have a stroke, or something else unanticipated. And, Picard's heart was in the right place, but four hours really wasn't that much of a rest in their condition.
They're a bunch of snakes in your bed out in space when you're sleep deprived, that's quite enough. But in answer to your question I live in Minnesota so I have no idea.
@@sarahberkner Yeah, now that I watch this again, I realized we saw the snakes for such a brief moment that we probably were supposed to have not enough time to recognize any of them. So probably none or few of them were even real snakes. 🐍⛎
I think people are just impatient, as always. Remember the time they were having technical problems with the ship, and Picard was not watching where he was going, and the doors opened, but there was no lift there and Picard caught the sides right. Before he fell down the elevator shaft? 😲

Mr. Data, would you join me in my ready room? Yes, Sir! Mr. Data, there is a certain practice among humans, that relieves stress. Would you be so kind and assist me? This is highly irregular, Sir! I know Mr. Data, but never more necessary than now. I assume you are fully functional?
