A guy dressed up in a Star Wars t shirt who does RU-vid videos is yelling at people for working in restaurants and daring to take a trip… I don’t like AOC either but to shit on her for not being a “serious person”… this creator needs to look in the mirror.

I'm a high-school dropout who got a job to support my mother and myself, and I never got to go to college, and now I have a wife and four kids, but I have a moral obligation to pay AOC's student loans... 🤔

Hold on. She is a politician making waaay above average than the average worker and wants the tax payer (who is already paying her wage btw) to pay for her student debt? Do I even have to explain why this is dumb?

Gee, I had almost $30,000 in student loan debt back in the late 90's and had it paid off in under six years. It's called get a useful degree, work hard, and make some sacrifices.

I have a simple solution. Before being allowed to file a loan application you have to provide proof of attending/passing a mandatory finance class. Half of the people wanting a loan would suddenly realize they're better off skipping college all together and entering the workforce with on the job training or industry standard certifications instead of degrees.

Congress members make like $175k a year. How has she not paid off her loans yet, and why should anyone pay for anything for people making that kind of money?

She needs to ask for a refund because it made her dumber. Never confuse education with intelligence.

I went to a cheap community college and then transferred to a cheap four-year university. I did this because I had no money for school. These people that go into massive debt should not rely on other people to pay off their mistakes. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for someone else with a degree at a better university than I went to.

I'm all for cancelling student debt...on the front side. Eliminate government loan guarantees and force financial institutions to vet student loans for recoverability as they do all other loans. That should quickly eliminate the majority of bullsh!t courses.

College only trains you to remember things short term and how to answer tests. There was literally a required class I took where an entire section was over how to, more or less, accurately guess on multiple choice tests.

This woman is making over 6 figures a year. Anyone who had any kind of financial responsibility would have made it a priority to pay off her debt while making this kind of income. She could have easily paid this loan off her first year in congress. She didn't because its politically convenient for her to have this debt.

Actually, that woman not paying off the loan for her daughter's education totally could have paid that off if she had started making payments right away. She'd have to pay about $746 a month, but she's only supporting one person on that $40k, so it should be quite doable. Assuming average yearly home costs (mortgage, insurance, upkeep, taxes), and average costs for food, eating out, utilities, insurance & health, cable, & phone, she'd be able to make that payment. She'd only have a little to spare for retirement savings but reducing eating out (the average eating out cost is pretty high) and getting a cheaper tv option like a streaming service (people really be out here paying $200 a month for annoying ads?) would allow her to set aside much more for retirement while still paying the loan. I didn't factor in car payments because at that age she should probably have paid off whatever car she is using and not be irresponsibly buying an expensive new depreciating asset. She has no excuse to have made zero payments on that loan. If she cannot make payments, it is because she is living in a home larger than she needs, living in a high cost of living area, making car loan payments, spending a lot extraneously, or some combination of these. She would not even have to had adapted her lifestyle overnight to amend these things because parent plus loans don't accrue interest until after the child graduates. So, if she was making car payments and living somewhere costly, she could move and pay off her car before her daughter's graduation. No excuse. Now, if she doesn't have a retirement plan that will allow her this same level of income and won't have paid of her home when she retires, the student loans could be a problem when she retires. However, at that point her daughter should be past entry-level in her career and more than capable of paying the loan or at least contributing. It should not be the taxpayer's responsibility to help you spoil your daughter with a cost-free education. If you want her to have that, it is on you to pay for that.

So she makes 6x more than me but I managed to pay off my entire college loan within the first month and she hasn't made a single payment in over 2 years. Isn't life just great? 🙄

Let's be honest a large reason she doesn't pay them off when she can is to seem relatable and so forth. She gets more than 20k in value worth of votes from people who think oh she is just like me and that gives me hope and warm fuzzy feelings.

I paid mine - with the money she's making in Congress she should have plenty of funds to pay her school loans. Not my fault these people took 4 (plus) years to figure out that the degree they were pursuing was useless.

The price of many universities has become astronomical with many professors being paid well over 500k a year and others making over a million plus. It’s absolutely ridiculous when most of them don’t do anywhere near that amount of work and if the truth was known their T.A.’s do most of the real work. But when the government gives out loans to anyone then hat gives the universities a green light to raise prices and salaries. Our government didn’t think it through at all before starting the handouts.

She said the "scepter of student debt" rather than the "specter of student debt". That education she bought is coming in handy. Universities need to pony up and give back the money they took and provided nothing of value in return. If you buy a car and it is a lemon you take it up with the one who sold you the car, not the person who loaned you the money to buy the car you chose. AOC could have put money towards her student loans instead of renting a fancy DC apartment and buying a Tesla.

If my mortgage company suddenly let me pay 0 interest for 2 years I would be trying desperately to do everything in my power to get that balance down. Because I went and got a good job in a trade I didn't have to take on student loan debt and bought a house. So by her logic shouldn't I get my mortgage cancelled? Why not cancel everyone's car payments? Hell why not just make everything free!

She is one of the least qualified to recieve debt forgiveness.

I went and got a Computer Science degree. I got grants that covered most of my debt. But ended up with a $5500 student loan. After getting a software engineer job I made it a priority to pay off that loan $1000 per paycheck. I made sure to get a degree that leads to a job and when you sign up for that loan you have to go through a tutorial on the responsibility of paying it of and fully understand what you're getting into. Lack of personal responsibility is the big problem here.

If she can't afford to pay her debts, then us 'regular' folks are in trouble. 🙄

I went to College and took out a loan to do so. I defaulted twice on the loan, but I got back on a payment plan and the loan was repaid. Folks, if you borrow money, you'll have to repay it, full stop.

I paid for all of my college even though it was a community college before I even attended it. I'm not rich I just worked 100 hours a week and save my money. When I got out of school in 1982 I was making over $70,000 in 1982 dollars.

My grandma has taught at a community college for most of her life, she always says free college is a horrible idea.

Having paid off all my student loans, I don't agree with cancelling student loan debt. I paid what I owed and sacrificed things to pay off my debts. I also chose a degree with a high return on investment. Nobody forced me to get a loan. I took the risk and have been rewarded for it.

If she's the product of her student loan debt she should pay double the price and start over. As a European I'm shocked by the way the likes of AOC and Bernie S twist the narrative about the way education and health care truly work over here.

I missed the part where government agents went to young people's homes at night, put a gun to their head, and told them "You better be going to college, boy. If you don't want to make use of that brain of yours, I might as well splatter it all over that hideous wallpaper". If you think college tuition is too expensive, don't go. Become an apprentice. There, you learn valuable job skills while you have a mix of on-the-job training and school, and you get paid while doing it. And apprenticeships aren't limited to stuff like carpenters or plumbers. Plus, if enough people just don't go to college, they'll rethink their pricing.

The problem is not a student debt crisis … this country is suffering from a personal responsibility crisis! That’s why someone making $40k a year is driving a $80k vehicle and up to their eyeballs in credit card debt on top of student loan debt! I had $150k in student loan debt. I worked my azz off paying it off as well as my car and credit cards by putting most of my income towards debt repayment… I cut back on going out to restaurants, vacations and expensive purchases just so I could pay off my debt first! Most Americans do not do this.

With her paycheck, she should have ZERO student debt. And honestly, NO debt, period. I gross $50k maybe a year. Sole provider. 3 kids. Got sick last year. Way behind. I'm self employed. Served in the military. And she wants ME to pay students debt? Insanity.

I went to a cheap college and worked full time and took as many classes as I could per semester. I did not party, I took both class and work seriously and managed to graduate debt free from college. Perhaps it’s selfish but I and others like me would be irritated if all college debt was forgiven. My family and I sacrificed a lot of time and money so I could get an education and if a bill like this passes we will have to sacrifice even more to pay for the party years of many other people.

Technically, buying a purebred dog is better than rescuing a dog because we import them from places like Korea. This still isn't an excuse for not paying off your $17k worth of school loans when you're salaried for $174k a year. Dx

I used to agree with student loan forgiveness because it would have helped me tremendously. But I stayed in my cheap apartment, worked , had a baby AND paid off $60k in student loans! It can be done if people want to get it done.

When I took out a loan for my first truck, I signed a contract stating that I would repay the 15k back. Guess what happened. I did pay the entire amount back with interest. My wife and I did the same thing with our other two vehicles that we have had since the first truck. We did the same thing with her student loan payments. We have more than half of those loans paid off now. We did this while paying off our home, and almost paying off the second car that I mentioned. The only obligation that each and every one of us has is to pay our debts and only take out loans that we can afford to repay.

I had to rewatch that 3 times and she actually says unemployment is low because everyone has 2 jobs. She clearly doesnt know that 1 person doing the work of 2 persons keeps 1 person unemployed but that doesnt matter because only about 15% of the population works 2 jobs. How is it possible for a grown woman, thats in office of all things, to be so wrong twice in one short sentence?

I used to support student loan cancellation myself cause I thought it meant I would get my work-study money back that I earned from doing part-time jobs (math tutoring, dishwashing, working at a Pizza Hut) in my college years. Now that I think of it, I think cancellation only benefits people who didn't go out and work as hard as I did.

While I agree with most of what you said, I think there is something wrong with our education. This federal subsidizing makes everything so inflated in costs. I think the cost of schools are outrageous. I am in pharmacy school at the tune of $60k a year. I have scholarships but I still have to borrow a lot just to attend. I get the argument that it is an investment, but for degrees that allow people to work in specific jobs, it is ridiculous they keep inflating the costs. Something just seems wrong when borrowing $200k+ to get into the career you want is considered "normal".

If they think that $26,000 in interest on $100,000 student loan that they borrowed is a lot, wait until they see that they have to pay back $350,000 for a $200,000 home if it’s mortgaged for 30 years. And guess what, if you stop paying your student loans nobody’s gonna kick you out of your home. If you stop paying your mortgage you’re gonna lose your damn house.

I paid off over $5000 dollars in debt I took out after dropping out for a year from a big university. I’ll be damned, if I can pay off my student loans with a part time job, an adult can too with a knife actual degree. Also, go to community college. Don’t make the mistake I did.

For those of us that responsibly paid off our student loans, can we get my car note wiped out? If student debt gets wiped clean can I get my mortgage taken care of or something? I always say, smart people go to college but not everyone that goes to college is smart.
