Monkey Makes A Fire: Kanzi The Bonobo Makes A Campfire
SUBSCRIBE: bit.ly/Oc61Hj
It was a pivotal moment in history that separated man from other primates. Over a million years ago humankind began to conquer its fear of fire and use it as a tool. But now one special ape - a 31-year-old bonobo chimpanzee called Kanzi at the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa - is showing us just how close we really are. Astonishingly the male chimp's favourite things to do is make campfires. With impressive dexterity 12 stone (170lb) Kanzi collects firewood and breaks it into appropriate sizes. He arranges the sticks in a pile, ignites them with matches or a lighter, and then watches the flames take hold. Then Kanzi erects a grill over his fire so he can cook burgers and marshmallows over it, using a frying pan. According to Dr Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, his main handler and the only scientist ever to conduct language research with bonobos, he does it all because it fascinates him. Watching Kanzi make fire is particularly interesting to scientists at the facility - a world-class research centre dedicated to studying the behaviour and intelligence of great apes - because they are investigating the big cultural events that led to differences between humans and other primates. Because we share 99.5% genes with bonobos - our closest relatives - Dr Savage-Rumbaugh argues our differences are mainly cultural.

I'm more concerned about the confusion between human evolution and a single bonobo performing- and repeating "tricks" it learned from his trainer/keeper/whatever. If I teach a dog to "shake (hands)", it doesn't mean I should run out and buy it a tuxedo, because it just came one step closer to polite and sociable gentleman.

Bonobos and chimpanzee DNA is closest to humans. We share DNA with every living thing. And at one time bananas and humans were the same organism. We are just further apart from bananas. Nothing in biology majes sense without evolution.
@Stethacanthus
@Stethacanthus 6 лет назад
Tsinat Gebreselassie, we are related to mice and yes even bananas. Whales are more closely related to hippos than they are to seals, despite the clear difference morphological similarity. By the way, I am a biologist and in science the word "theory" means a collection of facts as best that scientists can prove them.
@Stethacanthus
@Stethacanthus 6 лет назад
Tsinat Gebreselassie all multi-cellular organisms seem to share a common ancestor. Any other explanation relies on an unjustifiably higher number of assumptions. There are some genetic constructs like viruses that the jury is still out on. You are denying the best patterns that we are aware of. I am looking at life and testing patterns. You are imposing a conclusion on these patterns.

***** Oh, really? Wow, I didn't knew that... At the same time, he's the same size as Caesar, who is a chimpanzee, and he is also ridiculously more violent than him, which is uncommon for bonobos as compared to chimps, but kinda explained by his backstory. Thanks, I'll read more about it.
@nesadr93
@nesadr93 9 лет назад
***** You were right, Koba is indeed a bonobo, but it shows poor research on the part of the filmmakers to characterize him like that. Here, read these two articles so you see my point, it's quite interesting:
@nesadr93
@nesadr93 9 лет назад
***** Yet for all other apes, a critical aspect of their lineage remained, so why downplay that with Koba? For many people, this will be the first contact they have with a bonobo (a fictional one, but still), so not only is it a waste of an opportunity to represent them well and educate, but it is also a disservice to bonobos in general, because it might make the general public weary of bonobos. Media representation of new information has a history of being relevant culturally in this sense. That's not correct at all, clearly his hormonal levels must have affected his decision, because that's exactly what hormones do. Think of the proverbial psychopathic serial killer, he has a mental disorder that makes him do those things. If you suddenly got a brain disorder that made you a psychopath, you would almost surely end up doing the same as that serial killer, because we are nothing more than very complex biological machines, no decision is truly "our own". Genetic, environmental, personal history and quantum variables all affect what you'll choose, there is no "free will". You can try reading more about it online if it interests you, but it is a heady topic.
@nesadr93
@nesadr93 9 лет назад
***** Yeah, looking at it that way it would make sense. After all, it is mostly thanks to sex that they get to be so peaceful. They are my favorite ape too, and after them come orangutans. Did you read one of the links I posted? In one of them, the author of the article talks about a "Planet of the Bonobos" and how it would all be perfect, lol. Basically, bonobos are the elves of the ape world (if you play RPGs you'll get the joke).

What is the most complex task an ape can learn? Can an ape learn to work on a factory assembly line?
@deanj-up
@deanj-up 2 месяца назад
Absolutely, the simple nature of factory line working would be immensely stimulating to an ape but not all.
@DEO777

@@deanj-up That's great news and now my luxury automobile company called APE (Automobile Production Extreme) can become a reality. No humans or robots on the assembly line, only apes. The free ape labor will make luxury cars affordable for the middle class.

If anyone needs solid proof that we are related to apes this has to be it. Kanzi uses lots of different pictures and signs to communicate with humans and he'll pass on this knowledge, I'd be interested to see what his great grand children can do.
@qwerty8382
@qwerty8382 10 лет назад
It's not really 'proof' though, is it? They've taught it to take the cap off a bottle and put a marshmallow on a stick which being one of the few creatures with fingers and thumbs is fairly easy for it, it's amazing but I've seen cats use the toilet, it's all down to patience and perseverance.

I had a cat that was obsessed with my building fires to cook on. He would come running at the slightest hint of me starting a fire, and would intensely watch every step, as if trying to understand, and master the skill. Once the fire was lit, and burning he would step back, and look at me as if I were a GOD!!!

I don't know what I'm more impressed by, the implied fact that he started the fire all by himself or his ability to comprehend not only how to toast a marshmallow, but also accept that toasting the marshmallow is a way of preparing the food to make it even more appealing to eat.

Think about this, if we ever domesticated Bonobos, could they evolve more and maybe communicate with us if they had a different voice box?
@xenomann442
@xenomann442 10 лет назад
I have thought about that. Problem is it would take a few hundreds years at the least. New dog breeds can evolve in a few centuries, but dogs also reproduce quicker and with more offspring. So artificial selection can work rapidly in dogs. In bonobos it would take too long to see within our lifetimes.

Bonobos are my favorite animal and knowing that one can make a fire is just incredible. Bonobos are such fascinating creatures. But I don’t fear them which I guess is why I like them so much. I would never go up to one even if I knew it was a bonobo. But I don’t believe they are remotely close to being as harmful as chimpanzees They have survived and thrived by sexuality. Instead of fighting they have intercourses. They choose love not war and that is fascinating. I’m so glad that someone helped prove how smart they really are. I’m so happy knowing this.

You'd expect them to be a lot like us. 98.7% shared DNA. These, in my opinion, are people. Not human people, but people nonetheless. We also are Great Apes, some have called us the third chimpanzee. Now, should it be Homo Sapiens, Homo Troglodytes and Homo (presumably) Hominiscus ? Or Maybe Pan Sapiens, Pan Troglodytes, Pan Paniscus ? I vote for the latter .... Then, together, we may mourn for and reflect on the Fourth Chimpanzee - Pan Neandethalensis.

@@markcheckley3715while this theory is cool, it discards all the extint great apes of the Homo genus; homo erectus, homo habilis, and like you said, neanderthals. But i'm agree these guys are people, to say at least. They are concious and sentient. They are our younger siblings :)
