The Russians are putting much more energy in developing radar and Anti-Aircraft-Artillery, and at this discipline they may be better than the Americans. The S400 is better than the Patriot because it can also take down cruisemissiles. The S500 can do anything the S400 can, but is supposed to also be able to take down ballistic missiles. This all on paper ofcourse because it has never been tested for real. The real underlying point is that developing radar and AAA is much cheaper than developing fighterjets, that also cost like 100 million dollar each. So how eager will the west be to risk their super-expensive planes against these ground to air weapons?

@xAlexTobiasxB

The Patriot can intercept cruise missiles and of course also ballistic missiles too (which was one of the basic requirements for the developement of this system). The only advantage of the S400 is longer max range but in modern warfare it would not be useful since in modern warfare the attacking aircrafts would launch their missiles far outside then S-400's range, and modern cruise missile fly very low at the ground under the radar horizon so they wont be detected at long range anyway, diminishing the only advantage of the S400. And the counterpart to the S-500 is the THAAD which has already been in active service way longer even before the S-500 was developed.

Probably one of the coolest things I've ever learned about the F-35. Thank you. I feel like it was STUPID to use the 25mm GAU on only the A model ... creating an entire problem with accuracy, and to where the B (FFS, the MARINE VS!!?) and C version having to use a damned POD for a gun. The 20mm would've been just fiiiiine. If nothing else, the pod should've been angled down 15° as you'd never use it for A-to-A ... Also -- WHY didn't all three variants get the wings from the Navy..? Why wouldn't they both standardize them, and, give them the greatest range possible..? Most of all for the Marine // STOVL variant .... which pays the greatest penalty in range bc of it's STOVL. And WHY didn't they use a trapezoidal shaped vertical stabilizer like the F-22 ... which'd reflect RADAR upwards irrespective the aspect from which it's being painted by RADAR..?? It's not more expensive. You don't have to invent the wheel twice. So why?? As far as the value of the series...? People look at that entirely wrong. Consider the F-117 sorties to Baghdad vs an A6 or FA-18 ... The A6 had to travel as a flight PACKAGE. Requiring dedicated superiority jets, dedicated attack (the A6), EW (the F-111R or similar) ... in contrast, the F-117 required no escort. So let's say the F-117 cost 5x (much of it to do with how few were built and being 1st gen) ... but compare the cost per bomb dropped. How many assets were required for 1 mission. IF you could replicate the efficiency ... say, comparing to an FA-18 which is probably accompanied by F-15C and perhaps EA-18 (all in pairs) ... you're talking about a package (of say, 8 aircraft which might be light) that's $560-million in order to get the ordinance off 2 FA-18c or D ... vs perhaps ... 2x F-35C .... at $115-million each or $230-million ... in which the other 4 pilots can do other tasks. It's just a more holistic way of looking at 'value." Another great example... "The cost of a THAAD or BMD (ICBM missile defense) is more than the ICBM costs." Yeah ... and so does a ballistic vest that police officers wear more expensive than the 9mm rounds people could shoot at them. A better comparison ..? Might be ... say ... the ICBM versus the CITY it's protecting. Or, if it were a dirty bomb !?? The cost of every citizen losing their civil liberties on top of the value of the containment area. We just tend to look at value props in contexts that don't exactly make the best sense ... but once we hear the framing, it becomes rote. My 2c.

@Blob B Both F22 and F35 feature LPI communication, yes, and F35 has IR cameras of sorts, true, the passive electromagnetic collection capabilities of the F22 surpass the F35. While the F35 pilot can use DAS to "see", the F22 also has a form that's integrated into the ALR94. Fact is the computer systems are far faster at detecting and classifying threats. The EOTS is great for close-in bombing, especially as a passive sensor for finding parked targets (radar can also do this and isn't limited by the weather / clouds). DAS and EOTS both utilize the IR spectrum (heat) and have many limitations. The F22s detection system is superior to the 35s --- The F22 can pinpoint an electronic emission from over 250 miles away. It detects everything from the spark ignition system in a vehicle, to a cell phone, hand held radio, etc... covering everything from DC (the current) to IR. They left the extended IR capabilities (EOTS) off of the F22 because they didn't want it being used for the ISR roles, which is funny, because that's exactly what it had done in the middle east for the longest time before they actually dropped some bombs (f22 was designed with 2 of them, 1 at each wing root). The ANAPG77v1 out-ranges all IR capabilities outside of tracking missile launches for example (pretty much every flying fighter can see such, as can satellites). The 22's radar is more powerful than the 35s, and like the 35's can be Q'd by one of the sensors (most of which are tied to the ALR94 --- take a look at most defensive systems and you'll notice they don't use the ALR moniker). The 22s passive detection systems features more than 3 times the sensors than that of the 35. A primary mission design parameter for the F22 was hunting terrain following weapons, be it cruise missiles or something with B1's capabilities.

A few years ago "Aviation Week" reported that the APG-81on the LM CATBird aircraft jammed the F-22's APG-77, even though it's a Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) radar. I think it's safe to say the APG-81 has a few other "tricks" up it's sleeve that we don't know about.
@LRRPFco52
@LRRPFco52 6 лет назад
777: They began upgrading APG-77 in response to APG-81 developments, which hinged on a lot of lessons-learned from APG-77. I've seen a lot of criticisms from amateurs about the APG-81, and they are so far off the mark, it isn't even funny. Module counts were way off, power output, CPU management, ECM, ECCM, etc. A lot of people think the F-35 is "just a strike aircraft", while the F-22 is strictly air superiority. LTCOL Burke, who has flown both extensively, said the F-35 has some air dominance capabilities that the F-22 does not, and the F-22 pole-smokes anything out there currently. Biggest thing is that F-22 and F-35 pilots can pick and choose how, when, and where to prosecute a fight using tactics that were only dreamed of by fighter pilots of the last era. Imagine taking off in the F-35 with a theater-level God's-eye picture of the area, with enemy TD boxes already appearing before you even get to cruise altitude or speed, with friendlies and no-shoots equally represented in the helmet....without even emitting a single RF signal, then being able to fly corridors to highest probability of intercept in conjunction with your mates, from off-axis approach angles instead of conventional merges. On top of that, you have higher cruise speed than any 4th Generation fighter with combat load, with better fuel efficiency, longer combat radius than legacy birds with wing tanks, and impressive cornering speeds at altitude.

@MrSpychecker

Guy Smith, you're spot on with that one. However; lower frequency radars track with lower resolution, and thus cannot be used to track missiles. They can, however, cue more focused beams on the X-band when paired with other radars, which concentrate radar energy in a small area. This increases the probability of radar intercept as well as the blip to scan ratio. Lower frequency radars, however, have larger antennas, thus being slower, bigger, less numerous and are easier to defeat. That being said, the Russians equipped their PAK-FA with the N036L-1-01 L-band radar, with the specific purpose of IFF. Although, to an extent, this radar can be used to track a stealthy aircraft, albeit at a 1950s/60s level of blip-scan ratio. This is the only fighter that I know that has this capability... With respect to standoff weapons, no military planner would knowingly send their aircraft OVER a battlefield protected by anything larger than a MANPADS or AA system. SEAD strikes conducted by EA-18G Growlers would most likely take place before F-35s and F-22s go in to establish dominance, since the EA-18G is a dedicated platform that can carry the AGM-88 HARM. The F-35, (I believe even the F-22), can carry the JSOW and JSAM, however with compromise to their stealth since their bulkiness requires it to be stored externally.

@chobbybeeseburger
@chobbybeeseburger 8 лет назад
+FalcoGer Actually- AESA radars are stealthier because they transmit over several frequencies and the signal blends in with background noise depending on range.
@FalcoGer
@FalcoGer 8 лет назад
Just because they say something like that doesn't mean it's actually true. They use a radar that uses random frequencies. Still if you emit at random frequency, you can't just expect it to be filtered as background, at least not at ranges that are not rediculous, it's still a million times more energy than just noise. Frankly I'm quite fed up with the F-22 and F-35 advertisement and propaganda. I'm not saying they're shitty planes, but every 'documentary' makes it sound like they're invincible superfighters and everything else is shit. Stealth doesn't mean you can't be picked up, it means you're harder to detect at longer ranges, and the aspect angle matters a great deal, it's something that needs to be planed and micromanaged, not some kind of superweapon. And besides that, Russia, China, India and a couple of other states have their own stealh aircraft programs, but they won't waste as much money on it as the US does.
@FalcoGer
@FalcoGer 8 лет назад
Radars operate on return pings from their emission. The return is very weak in comparison what is sent out. If you couldn't detect the emission, the F-22 couldn't detect it's own contacts, as they were indistinguishable from background, even if the computer knew the frequency it just used. It may be undetectable at 150 miles, but that's about it.

+South Paw Russia and china are awesome at coming out with cheap foils to american technology. Take all the stealth you want; russia recently deployed an inductive reactance countermeasure that makes all but the most ancient non-visual sensors in a 600 km area useless. Funny thing about inductive reactance is that the more something utilizes electronics, the more it is disabled.

tyroneemail china and russia havent built ANYTHING that can compete. neither country engineers basic tech for civilian world. it all comea from the west. if they cant make basic tech, they cant make ground breaking tech, only steal little pieces. the US monitors both coumtries and we know what they know about js. china and russia use MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP for cjrists sake. russia and china are decades behind. china only exists because of cheap labor, and even that is falling. russia makes worthless gas and vodka, nothing more.
@ВладимирИванов-й4э4ф
Why is redar antenna array mounted sloped up? This way it will have redused air-to ground capability. Is it for stealth purposes? And range of 100nm is not very good. Su-35 using PESA radar has range of 200+ nm. It detects F-15 on 200 nm that is. And can jam AMRAAM missiles. I am not even sure F-35 will be able to beat Su-35, not speaking on stealth T-50 and China new planes. Not impessing actually.

@ВладимирИванов-й4э4ф
+South Paw Are you a bot or something?
@ВладимирИванов-й4э4ф
+Brad Ryan You are wrong. I understand that for people with Iphone mentality previous generation technology is always worse then "modern". But in real life real parameters are more important than "device coolness". And PESA radar is not single frequency. Maybe US 1980s PESA radars have such flaw, but not modern PESA radars. AESA can track more targets and scans quicker, yes. It is more But if PESA radar have twice the range it might be better in real life situations when you don't need to attack 20 targets simultaniously.

AESA radar is a Low probability intercept system. It "randomly" generates frequencies which make detection difficult, and bearing near impossible unless the receiver is also AESA. Radar receivers have to collect several wavelengths and compute the data to get a target ID and bearing, AESA makes this difficult because its spread over so many frequencies that fire simultaneously.

Because it was just an act of complacancy on NATO's part coupled with a real one in a million esque chance, where the radar hit the Nighthawk RIGHT as it's bomb bay was open. WHich it is for not even a second, and the Nighthawk's target was still destroyed. Also the pilot and the radar operator ended up become friends iirc, which is neat.

Throw in the upgrade for F-35 block 4 on it's radar, DAS, ESM, ECM etc, the F-35 will be so far ahead of the competitors like the F-16, Super hornet, Eurofighter, Rafale, Chinese and Russian fighters, I can only see the other aircraft with successful contracts only because the buyer is restricted to purchase F-35 or they are potential unfriendly nations thus F-35 restricted.

It frequency hops on each transmission making TRADITIONAL RADAR seeking/hot-spotting systems discard the transmissions as random noise. Obviously years later things have moved on and there are systems that will now track these LPI RADAR types - Tranche 3 onwards Typhoon for instance keeps a 3D map of all the RADAR emissions it "sees" and stiches them together to recognise frequency hopping threats. APG-81 can also copy the RADAR emissions being fired at it (as long as they are in the wavelengths covered my APG-81) and fire back spoofed returns designed to confuse the RADAR system and if close enough it will do so at high outputs to cause "burn through" effectively temporarily blinding the RADAR altogether by flooding it with signals that are louder than the actual returns but deliberately miscoded so the tracking RADAR will discard it as interference from another RADAR without seeing its own weaker returns. Yes modern RADARs can actually tag their transmissions by means of pulsing them in a particular sequence so they can tell if returns they receive are theirs! APG-81 can code transmissions differently TR module by TR module to have multi-channel (parallel processing) capabilities. Something only possible with AESA RADARs.

Duhhhh... you realize that many other countries are currently using AESA / PESA, and many more have it on the drawing board? For example, the PAK-FA AESA was recently revealed for India. EF2000 brought CEASAR to some countries. China has plans on the drawing board. Here is AESA / PESA offered by Russia's NIIP- watch?v=3jjdIrRm3XE Notice that the AESA pivots, giving the Su35 up to 120 degrees off boresight. F35/F22 does not. And AMRAAM/BVRAAM range is less than R77. So much for "first kill"
