i think this is a reference that during the cold war both of them have direct hotline to call each other during a crisis and to avoid the cold war going hot. i believe it was use during the Cuban Missile Crisis and during the six-day war.
First off Everyone is misunderstanding the Perestroika comment. Perestroika means “Recosntruction”. That wasn’t America scared of Russia. That was America threatening Russia. America aside Belarus is literally the only one not terrified of him.
PinkMacaroon I think Germany gets creeped out, but he doesn’t fear Russia. Japan honestly is Japan so I don’t question it. However, America isn’t afraid of him either. That one clip was America getting attacked by Russia’s scarf (which has proven to choke other nations, like China) Russia and America are actually cannon friends, or frenemies in some cases. And if you look at history, prior to WWII Russia and America were phenomenal allies with each other. They had amazing trade deals and even Russia sided with the Union during the American Civil War. 😊
I wish this was animated SO bad, but there's a strip where the USSR is visiting Nazi Germany to discuss an alliance. The scene where Russia was struggling to pick and outfit and Lithuania pisses him off was animated but not the following segment. When Japan finds out Russia's coming to Germany, who he's staying with, he freaks out, compares Russia to Godzilla because of how monstrous he is, and tries to straight up fucking murder him multiple times, including poisoning his onigiri and sneaking into the ceiling to HARPOON HIM FROM ABOVE. It's explained that Russia kicked Japan's ass with little to no effort whereas Japan went broke and his military was decimated in a war between each other (can't remember what war that was though). So Japan is actually quite scared of him.
I don't think it was mentioned but the "safeword" at 0:16 is referencing Russia's economy reformation. Kinda makes sense that America would use a word like that. XD
This is why Russia is one of my favourite characters in Hetalia He's a very unique character, he is mysterious and really tall. He's the kind of character that makes you go "Awwww!" And at the same time he makes you piss your pants because of how scary cute he is ADMIT IT, RUSSIA IS THE SCARIEST AND THE CUTEST LITTLE BEAR CUB EVER WE HETALIANS MUST GIVE HIM A BIG HUG

In Hetalia comics Finland even in modern times is kind of scared of Russia but Russia wants to be friends with him. So in Hetalia World this logic doesn't work:)
