Here's my rendition of the fantastic Aphex Twin tune "Flim" off the 'Come to Daddy' album. I was accompanied on guitar and based my playing on about 90% of the original tune. It's not a note for note cover, but my part uses a lot of the original playing.
This video was taken from my 2009 TAFE college recital.
In the video i'm using a converted 16" Pearl Export tom as a kick
a 10x5" ddrum Diablo snare. (Probably the ugliest snare -ever-)

do yourself a favor and listen to The Bad Plus' cover (search for the bad plus flim new morning and you'll find it). It's really much better.

I just watched this Bad Plus cover and i thought they are just more "better equiped" than this boys. And even with such production the pianist is terrible. The piano sounds like shit and he miss a lot of notes. This boys are A LOT better.

This seems like it wouldn't be hard to play, especially if you were playing along with the tune. But it is once you sit down at a kit and try. Great job man, this is awesome.

@StudioGuyMN Thanks man! Yeah, agreed. Sadly i had no say in the Audio. I tried to boost it as much as i could, but sadly this was recorded off of the camera mic and mixed to the dvd i received. I was told it was going to be a mix off the desk, sadly this wasn't the case. Oh well. You can at least hear whats being played.

@rocklobster4731 Somewhat! There's an skeleton of a groove inherent in this tune, and once i had that down, i used the specific phrases that i heard in the original to create my own version based heavily on those phrases and concepts. SO, technically I am improvising, but this was a very rehearsed performance, and although there are slight differences, it is very close to the original recording with some of my own ideas.

@NuclearLullaby Agreed! Sadly when I given this footage, it was super quiet. I didn't have any decent video editing software at the time, so there wasn't much I could do with the audio. A real shame for sure!

Aw, thankyou! Sadly the only audio i have of this is form this video, which is really quiet and sounds like it has some sort of delay on it... I could try cleaning it up in cubase perhaps and getting some extra volume out of it. If i have a go at it, I'll be sure to let you know what happens. The lesson from this is always ensure that you get a recording off the desk and not to trust the camera man with it!

@@EliGreenDrums I don't know man. This one pretty much captured a lot of feel for me. And more so because of the school/ college recital setting, it really adds to the core underlying innocence of the track. You could try doing it with 'better' sound, say, in a studio with triggers and stuff and of course with better hair. Put it up only if you feel it holds up well against this performance which frankly has reached legendary status in the annals of RU-vidland. Love from Mumbai, India.

@Kitsua I think you're right, getting down to the bare essentials and delving into what makes the song really tick and putting that on display really lets the simplicities of the piece shine through. I think flim is such a raw sounding tune that acoustic drums make it work really well in a live setting. I love the bad plus version, though didn't see it until after this was performed. I'd have loved to incorporate some of those elements. Thanks again for the flattering words. I'm not worthy!

7 years ago I commented on this and I just watched it again.. still my favorite cover of Flim. The Bad Plus did a pretty great job too, but this is perfect. It's supposed to sound chaotic but relaxing..I used to be @helicop. Eligreendrums. Hope you are up to new good. Haha

That little push tempo fill (is that’s what it’s called) at 1:26 is CLASS

There is a rhythm to it, but it’s meant to be very loose and a pause from the heavily syncopated playing all around it, you can hear it on the original Aphex Twin track. I saw Jojo Mayer do a similar stick drop effect in another song around this time and figured it was an appropriate technique for this moment!
