From artist Tom Harold comes "Apollo's Folly," a rolling ball sculpture that was very thoughtfully commissioned by a wife as a gift for her husband. This sculpture measures 21.5” x 26” x 12.75” (VxHxD) and contains a number of unique features specifically at the request of my collector.
Notable immediately is the presence of the three mineral spheres displayed within the piece. These are a nod to my collector's interests in both astronomy and geology. The sun is calcite, earth of sodalite and the moon is pyrite. Each is contained by a custom-designed enclosure made of TIG welded stainless steel. I designed the enclosures so that they hang freely in the sculpture and may be removed. A hinged latch allows for personal inspection up close and the spheres may even be exchanged for other subjects of similar dimensions if desired.
The unique ball lift is an Archimedes screw style that is also of stainless, but was powder coated in a gloss black with a very light silver metal flake included to again touch upon astronomy and the night sky. Indeed, even the title of this sculpture, "Apollo's Folly" reflects the Greek god of the sun himself.
Overall, this sculpture is designed to accent the kinetic, flowing motion of the balls, similar in loose respects to the motions of the heavenly bodies. The flap gates are the only mechanical elements accenting the motion of the balls through the three paths that also contain loops, spirals, a coil and much curving and sweeping track.
For those looking for a unique and exclusive experience, my rolling ball sculpture is captivating and truly singular. It accents either home or office like nothing else. Awesome work Tom. I like that the screw is dark-colored. And beautiful video too.

Thank you very much, Tom! The powder coating of the screw was a request by my collector. It did turn out nicely. I put a fair amount of time into the video, so I appreciate the compliments there as well.

Bill, hey, thanks so much for checking it out! Man, you're on top of things! I am trying to get caught up. I have a few more overdue videos to share. Have you seen my Instagram or Facebook? I just created a pretty complex multi-arm lift that required plenty of legitimate illustrating and calculating to get right. It's going to be really cool!

I'll do a video of it after it is completed. There shouldn't be such a delay once I get caught up. Btw, do you know of a good (free?) CAD program? I was thinking I might do well to learn a bit and design some parts. I know nothing at this point.

all3dp.com/1/best-free-cad-software-2d-3d-cad-programs-design/ I hope the above link works in this message. My quick look offers 2 choices that I think are worth looking at. One is named just the way you want it and is called "FreeCAD" and the other is only free to students and otherwise cost 300/year. A must have has far as I'm concerned is the ability to open and save different file types including but not limited to DXF and STL also Step or STP. Fusion 360 is very popular and would not be a waste of money IF you really want to put the time into it. I want to encourage you to learn a CAD program that will be useful in the future and not just a short term experiment. I have seen people switch from one CAD to another and never get anywhere at all. FreeCAD may be very good too but you would need to research a few things. Do they have a great forum so you can find help each time you are stuck. Do people really seem to like it and etc. STL is necessary for 3D Printing which is very cheap now. DXF files are necessary for CNC and printing paper plans and templates. I question if you have time but it probably would be an excellent way to get your mind away for a short time from your art that I'm sure is very challenging at times. I use an old program and I don't really need or want to learn new software so I can't really help much.

Great link, Bill, thank you! I like that they list the skill level, OS and formats. I'll keep your thoughts in mind as I look through these. I see that FreeCAD works with Mac, which is great! Yes, I would need some forum support, I'm sure. Learning even a little CAD would really help me in a few areas with creativity and probably time and financial savings as well in some instances. Thanks again!
