As a "protestant" who feels very drawn to the Catholic church, I will say that I get the idea that everyone has a different apostalate, and that there should be people who simply focus on the apologetics for Catholicism and not into any of the controversies. That being said, as someone who is on the outside looking in and feels incredibly drawn to the truth of the Catholic faith, the magisterial teaching and tradition, the sacraments, etc, I am also appalled at the problems with the leadership right now, and its people like Matt Fradd who are willing to address those things, and still be unapologetically Catholic, actually make me *more* drawn to the faith, not less. When folks just act like there is no controversy, there are no problems, it turns me off. So thank you, Matt, for finding that great balance of saying, "Im not going to gaslight people; there are problems. But there have *always* been problems because the church is peopled with sinful people and we're still Catholic because it's the church Christ founded". Or, Im paraphrasing there but you know what I mean. :)

Trent is not denying any problems. We all have our focuses. Trent goes to a byzantine catholic church so therefore he is denying the validity of other forms of the mass; this seems to follow the same logic that Trent is denying something just because he doesn't talk about such-and-such topic. Do I think Trent's words on the sinful practices of men inside the hierarchy of the Church could be helpful? Yes, I believe his approach on the matter would be ideal, though I believe it would be best done on another channel so as to not dilute the apologetics channel. Has Trent said such sinful practices are fine or that we should not worry about such acts? I believe he has not; could I be wrong? I suppose but I find it unlikely. In resolution, I do not comprehend how Trent Horn the Catholic apologist denies controversies or problems in the church by not reporting them.

Who knew that to sit in front of a microphone a few hours a week and write a few books that rehash Catholic themes would earn the distinction of "Samurai." Ninja hold a weird spot, at least during the Sengoku Jidai, as possibly the most moral and loyal warriors in Japan. While a samurai could slaughter peasants and stab his lord in the back, you very rarely saw that from a ninja. While in certain social regards the samurai hold a similar place to knights, their ethical obligations were explicitly pagan, with the few exceptions being a step in embracing Buddhist compassion, and an even fewer being Christian (who were rapidly snuffed out)

For me between the NO and TLM, I've personally found the number of saints that attended mass in latin, the liturgy, reverence and just a feeling of being connected to a tradition that developed centuries ago something inspiring. The NO is great too and if that's what inspires someone to become a saint, then I'm happy their attending, but more importantly may God bless them greatly on their journey to sainthood!!

Great to see Trent appearing on your site. I liked Trent's idea to stick with apologetics. There are far too many people focussing on Church gossip, disagreement with the Pope's decisions, which is causing division and great confusion and harm to the Faithful. Remember Martin Luther thought he was going to set the Pope right in his day. Look at the result. Approximately 35000 different Protestant splinter groups was the end result and still growing in number. Will these know all Fundamentalists ever learn? John Henry Newman got it. Not unlike St. Peter, Francis will get some things right and some things wrong. But in the whole, if we stick with the status quo, what is incorrect in one generation will be eventually corrected in the following. We have that assurance from the Holy Spirit. Yet many are proclaiming they know more than the current heirarchy and have forgotten the promise and role of the Holy Spirit, just like Luther. This is why Fundamentalism became so prevalent. They had all the answers. They "knew" they were saved. They preached the pope was the "Anti-Christ". They had unwittingly become Pharisees. Those very critical Catholics, who sew division and claim, "To Know" must be looked upon with great suspicion. Remember Martin Luther and the disaster he started.
@claymcdermott718
@claymcdermott718 2 года назад
There’s some truth in what you’ve written, but let us remember that a big percentage of the bishops (including the pope) are complicit in covering up huge global child molestation. Most viewers are American, so it’s worth pointing out that the majority of the bishops in the USCCB voted to do nothing as a conference on child molestation (because the pope asked them to vote that way, and it’s obvious some American bishops knew in advance he’d ask that), and then voted against even encouraging the pope to do anything. All basically decent ordinary people know more about whether it’s okay to do nothing than our hierarchy.
@claymcdermott718

BTW: not rejecting church teaching, not preaching disobedience to legitimate commands. I’m saying let’s admit that the hierarchy, as a whole, does not merit respect right now.

“If you don’t work, you don’t eat”. I love it and I didn’t know that this concept is in the NT. When I think of yesterday’s gospel (“Martha, Martha…”), while I DO understand its spiritual meaning, I also think it’s one of the gospel passages that would have benefited a lot from just a bit more context, because the way it’s written, every time I read it it sounds like Martha is being scolded while she is the only one doing any work. While Mary is doing nothing and being served, and she is praised, Martha has to shut up, make the croissants and coffees and hurry up about it. Again, I know what the passage is about (with its nuances about the role of women and a rabbi) but most homilies I heard about it miss the mark by a mile and go lazily into the “don’t work too much” message, which is not what Jesus meant.
@jendoe9436
@jendoe9436 2 года назад
This reminds me of the “Rest on the Sabbath” arguments. In principle, I understand it means taking time out of the week to praise God and let labor fall away for a bit. The issue is those like the Pharisees (or was it the other group) saying NOTHING can be done on the Sabbath, including miracles and pulling one’s ox out of the mud. Resting is good, but not every rest is equal. I like to curl up with a book on Sundays or cook up some meals, while others find Sunday drives or light jogging restful. So long as we allow our bodies rest and focus on God, it is possible to do something on Sundays without overworking ourselves.
@tomlabooks3263
@tomlabooks3263 2 года назад
@@jendoe9436 Good point, I agree with you. I’m not sure this is easily inferred from the Mary and Martha story. While other concepts brought forward by Jesus are strong and simple (to understand, not to put in practice!), this one about work and spiritual life is naturally more complex so a bit more context or nuance in writing that passage would have helped a lot.

Regarding the trads and their desire to say "withdraw. " I think they are principally right in that they are focusing on removing the plank in their own eye first. And I think that a religious life that is focused pursuing Christ first in a personal way, and reflecting that love in charity (if you look at the trad and orthodox communities in America their charity is off the charts) Charity is the best evangelization IMHO. It moves the heart of someone who sees charity and the hearts of those who receive it while the giver of the charity made closer to Christ.

Regarding the feeling of not being ready for apologetics, though we all should try to learn, we should remember God's providence in our own lives. The Lord knows best what we are capable of, both by preparation and by a moment of grace. He sets opportunities for love in your path. That includes guiding people to each other who can help each other in various ways. If you can offer little, the Lord will guide you to people who need little. Or He will give you more to offer on His behalf. To paraphrase St Paul, in my weakness the Lord's strength is revealed. When a fool speaks wisdom, people can witness the divine influence.

Matt brings up one clip he saw in one video of 50 episodes speaking on the crisis in the church, of course he’s going to misunderstand if he is not even going to try and understand the context! No “get to see where the other person is coming from first” there.

QUESTION ALERT/HOPING FOR A RESPONSE: Hi sisters and brothers!! So this is random but I’m really hoping someone might have the answer. I listened to a talk Matt had with someone (idk remember who but I have a feeling it might have been w/ Trent) Matt mentions a website he collaborated with other people on about faith to help guide/inform atheists/agnostics. Does anyone know that website and/or link?

Where could I have an extended conversation addressing certain questions and concerns I have? I have sent in questions to Catholic Answers before, and I don't blame them because of the way things are structured, but they often miss the point and have to move on. I need to like sit down with someone, and I'm not sure an average priest would be the most adequate apologist for what I'll be asking.

Hello Matt, I hope you can answer before you go on your "month-without-internet". What's the name of the nun on the shelve? Is that Saint Angela of the Cross? I usually go to mass where nuns devoted to saint Angela of the Cross (of course first devoted to God) live. She was born in Seville (Spain), just 1 hour from where I live. These nuns are amazing and are doing a great job in my hometown. (Maybe it turns out that the nun from that picture is not Saint Angela... 🤣, but well...) Thanks in advance. Sincerely in Christ.

I'd like to hear Trent talk more about capitalism and the problem of usery. I'm not super opposed to capitalism but that feels like the biggest hurdle it has to get over, because the church does condemn usery specifically and that can't be ignored.
@specialteams28
@specialteams28 2 года назад
Usury is lending money with sinfully high interest rates. Capitalism is a person using his own money to buy equipment and hiring people with his own money to use the equipment to make products for sale. Usury is clearly by definition sinful at all times. Capitalism is neither good or evil. The question is when people do immoral things within the capitalist system. But the same is true for all economic systems. Communism by its own definition is antithetical to Christianity because it explicitly forbids ownership of personal property. The Catholic Church officially promotes increased ownership of property/real estate as a founding principle of human dignity and justice.
@bernadettegalvin7768
@bernadettegalvin7768 2 года назад
@@specialteams28 where do you get the definition of usery only including sinfully high interest rates and what would decide what that rate would be? The reason I'd like to see it hashed out more is to really get to the heart of that and to really face the problem that our current capitalist economy is completely dependent on loans and interest, and couldn't really function without them. Even if they were allowable if the rates were low, I still can't imagine that its ok for our system to be largely based on debt. I say this as someone that believes in a free market.

"Because it's true" can't be a reason to make something a dogma. Matthew 11 speaks of the easy yoke and light burden, but demanding belief after belief on matters that aren't material to the gospel weigh that yoke down.

15:06 Jordan Peterson was the first step to me warming up to Christianity. Took a few more years to actually find evidence to believe it literally and not as "metaphorical wisdom" or something like that that considered it, but it was the first step. I think he should get more credit for that. I'm sure a lot more people than just me had that journey due to his reach.

A lot or quite a few people could talk about church controversy but Trent has fascinating learning to share. I'm not Catholic or even religious but love the arguments and history and thinking. Forgive me, but he would be wasted on that gossipy stuff. Mind you, your present Pope drives me nuts at times! As a person of traditional values I really wish he'd be a bit more, er, Catholic at times, so I appreciate the debate on that side too. I just think Trent is more valuable for you and for us all (because Catholicism is potentially a bulwark for Western civilisation) doing as he does.

Saying that the "brothers and sisters" of Jesus were step siblings from a previous marriage of Joseph is just wrong. That would mean then that Joseph wasn't "most chaste" as we refer to him and it also implies that Mary would've had to act as mother to other children aside from Jesus, which would then demean her stature as Queen of Heaven and having a unique connection to Jesus. Plus, in the passage where Jesus is 12 and stays at the temple the author mentions nothing about siblings, just saying Joseph and Mary were travelling with family and friends and the two of them went back to look for Jesus. It is the most likely case that the "brothers and sisters" of Jesus were cousins, like John the Baptist was. It is also a very likely possibility that it simply means spiritual brothers and sisters, which is to say disciples and close friends. Both of those possibilities are far more likely and more fitting to Scripture and teaching than Jesus having step siblings.

the 'sensational side' are not the Critics (I'd guess you're talking about Church Militant, Lifesite, Timothy Gordon, etc) but are in fact those in leadership of the Church. THEY are causing division and scandal. I thank God for these godly critics. It takes courage to stand up and speak the truth. And there's almost always a price for doing so. (I spent 30 years in ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church. I fought against liberalism in that communion most of that time. The price was quite high. Stress, anxiety, people in the parish gathering together in secret meetings planning to oust you, Bishops who would stand with them and NOT you, etc etc). There is a place for apologetics. But right now we have very corrupt leadership, Satan's minions, who are hell-bent on destroying the Church. That is where the 'front' is.
