Dr. Lera talks about apoquel, aka oclacitinib, with an adorable French Bulldog named Hanna.
Apoquel is an oral medication used to manage itching associated with allergic dermatitis (including atopy) in dogs at least 12 months of age. Oclacitinib works by inhibiting enzymes involved in itch, inflammation, and allergic reactions (janus kinase enzymes 1 & 3 [JAK1 & JAK3]). In many patients, this medication is as effective as corticosteroids (for example prednisone) with fewer side effects. Relief is often seen within 12-24 hours of giving the first tablet. My 5 year old shepherd/husky Pebbles developed allergies this summer. We went into the vet to update her shots and give her a good checkup. She was healthy as ever, and the vet prescribed Apoquel to help her itchiness from summer pollen. 2.5 months after using this drug, Pebbles collapsed on a walk to my horror. I quickly snatched her up and ran to my car, horrified knowing something was wrong. I decided to google “Apoquel side effects” and found several that matched… lethargy, lack of appetite, diarrhea… So I booked an appointment with the vet and immediately took her off Apoquel. She’s now been diagnosed with Lymphocytic Leukemia, and is slowly dying in front of me. This dog has been the greatest thing that ever happened to me in my life. She has been a therapy dog when I was down, and a best friend. I knew in my bones it was the Apoquel, and after finding HUNDREDS of other people saying the same thing, I’m convinced this “wonder drug” is poison. DO NOT give this to your beloved pet, it will likely kill them. I wish there were something else I could do, the helpless feeling I have watching this part of my family quickly die in front of me is the absolute worst thing.

heart wrenching. apoquel wasnt significantly effective for my boy, and he developed a skin leision within two weeks of starting the drug, so I immediatly stopped the apoquel when I spotted that., i was aprehensive about potential side effects, and am almost relieved it didnt work that well for him, due to my concerns. i'm so sorry for your situation, and anyone else suffering for trying the drug.

So sorry to hear that. My 8 year old German Shepherd/Husky has been biting at his paws for some time. A co-worker recommended Apoquel to me a few days ago and I was going to ask my dogs vet to give him a shot when I take him to the vet this week. I wanted to do my due diligence and research the drug fist and I am glad I did. I havent seen many positive reviews of the drug so I may need to go another route. I'm so sorry about you baby but thank you for warning others.

Thanks for the vid. Extremely helpful. Gremlin, my English Staffordshire Terrier has been on apoquel since December. The dosage he was on was 2 tablets twice a day for the first 14 days. The vet did recommend keeping him on 1 tablet twice a day but I have been giving him 1 tablet a day and he does itch every now and again but it’s not the constant scratching and biting from him. It helped immensely with the patches that he caused by biting himself on his legs. Also his tummy would get really red, now it is all clear.

There is a kit you can buy to have hair samples sent to a lab for allergie testing. Making dietary changes for our 2yo german shepard based on the results solved her issues. Our vet put our shepard on these, i looked into the possible side effects, and decided the pills were not for her, also the study done on the safety of these pills are laughable at best.

My Border Terrier was prescribed a 2 week course of Apoquel for skin condition in his ear. The treatment alleviated the symptoms but no cure. Our Vet recommended prescribing apoquel as a long-term treatment. So, as I would for myself if prescribed a long-term treatment, I researched long-term effects of apoquel .... overwhelmingly the evidence was shockingly negative.....plus the human brand names such as Vioxx have been taken off the market and there are legal class actions ongoing in the USA. I strongly advise DO YOUR RESEARCH ..... look at your pets diet and other lifestyle markers. Also, ultimately Piriton and Piriteze we found works well and importantly is safe.

Just to cut down on misinformation, Vioxx is not in any way related to Apoquel. Apoquel is a JAK inhibitor and Vioxx is a COX-2 inhibitor (NSAID). Apoquel may or may not be safe, but if it's unsafe, it's for entirely different reasons than Vioxx and Celebrex.

Hey doc got a ? We adopted a dog that was on apoquel. Came with 7 pills, and the soonest my vet could see us is 3 weeks. So we've gotten anti itch shampoos and skin and coat food and fish oil supplement, hoping them things will replace her need for apoquel. My question I guess is what should I watch out for as she runs out of apoquel? How much itching is too much itching? Am I doing what's right for my new dog?
@DrLera
@DrLera 2 года назад
Depends on how bad the dog is. If the dogs pretty bad then those things may not be enough. Omega-3 fatty acids can take up to 3 to 4 months to reach therapeutic levels so you'll have to be committed to that. I usually give people one to 10 scale. One being almost nothing and 10 being Non-Stop. You'd want to compare it to what a normal dog scratches and chews. Once they're hitting a three or four they probably need something. I might be prepared to go see another veterinarian at the very least to get that new dog on apoquel. Then you could do a follow up with your regular veterinarian

@@trytellingthetruth.2068 I wish I knew this earlier... My 9 year old boxer is prone to lumps and bumps and her lymph nodes swelled up in her neck and chest after being on Apoquel for a month. She has a vet appointment next week because she has become lethargic and has stopped eating. 😭 I believe she has developed lymphoma but the vet will confirm this next week. I'm sad that even after stopping the drug, she did not improve but continues to decline. I don't think this drug causes cancer but it suppresses the immune system so severely that the body stops fighting and the onset of cancers and illness occur very rapidly. I'm afraid I'm going to lose my Scarlett soon. 😔 Please steer clear of this drug if your dog is prone to lumps and bumps or if you have an older dog. I think I would have had another couple of years with my Scarlett had I not given her Apoquel.

@@savannahrhodes7259 I'm sorry to hear your dog and using Apoquel. If your dog does have lymphoma, then with the right medication and if treated straight away, the chances of survival are normally good, but treatment needs to be started straight away. My dog was given Apoquel for a condition he didn't have. But what he did have was a very slow growing benign lump and Apoquel should never be given if a dog has lumps, or a history of lumps etc. Unfortunately for my dog, I found out all the information about Apoquel when it was to late and he had to be put to sleep because he had lymphoma. I'm wishing you all the very best and hope you are able to treat Scarlett 💖.

Hello! I know I’m late to the party but can you please explain the difference between Apoquel and Cytopoint? I know Apoquel is obviously in pill form and cytopoint is in injection form. One of my Siberian huskies has always had terrible allergies and I’ve been going back and forth between cytopoint and apoquel for the past few years and it has reduced his itchy ness but he’s been in a cone now for a month recovering from several hot spots and I tried to take the cone off for him to see how he would do but he’s gone back to itching the same spots so I had to recone him and he’s been miserable! Are dermatologists normally expensive to consult/do biopsies? I am in California so I’m always expecting things to cost a lot and I wouldn’t mind paying had I had prior knowledge that something better may be able to work for him!

Request a test to see whats causing the allergy. Perhaps an ingredient in the food. My dog takes hydrolyzed protein food because i suspect hes allergic to chicken. It could be just the environment and allergys from outside. Once you know what triggers flare ups you can avoid these things and hopefully be helping your dog feel better. I believe tho you need to see a vet with a dermatology unit.

The dermatologist say that if dogs start developing skin issues such as fungal infections or even bacterial infections before 6 months of age there is a 99% chance that it is tied to food allergies. So that being said I anticipate most likely your dog has a food allergy and once you find the right food that does not cause allergies then all you really have to do is treat infection once and it should go away. If you happen to break the strict diet of what your dog is allowed to eat then they may develop another infection again

@blitzmom2674 I'm very sorry to hear what happened to your dog the issue that you run into is that you have patience that are completely miserable and have no quality of life as a result of itchiness and allergies and the clients have tried almost everything and they're on the verge of actually putting their dog to sleep and then they go ahead and they put their dog on apoquel and now the dog all the sudden has quality of life. I'm not saying that application without its side effects and that kind of stuff my own dog takes apoquel and I try to give it as little as possible. Because I am aware that it does impact the immune system. That being said if you have to choose between no quality of life quality of life but the potential impacts of the apoquel on your pet some people will still choose apoquel. The percentage of people are patients that that actually happens to has to be extremely low because if it was high apical would be shredded on the internet. The issue is when you're that 1% or your dog is at 1% or that 2%, it's terrible. For the other 98 or 99% of patients that it makes a big difference for those are the ones that are willing to go ahead and take the chance. Again I am very sorry that your pet died shortly after being prescribed apoquel. That's a really hard sell as of right now just cuz we don't have the data to be able to connect those kinds of cancers to specifically to that drug. But it is something that is within the realm of possibilities again at the end of the day I'm very sorry to hear what happened to your dog

My Willow was a heathy 8 year old when she was prescribed this medication no blood test were ever done even after her first lipoma. I would have loved to have been given the chance to make a informed decision but that was stolen from me. Willow was the best dog I have ever had and a member of our family who died because of some one else’s choices. I feel Vets should be required to give medication information to to families of their patients just like human doctors do.
