When I was younger my great grandmother showed me her report card from the one room school house that she attended in the Ozark Mountains. It was like looking through a portal to see the kindly old lady as a young girl, that apparently talked too much.

My home has been in north central Wisconsin since 1956 when my folks moved here when I was in 3rd. grade. I attended a one room country school about a half mile from our farm. We moved to another township when dad fell on hard times and we rented a run down home who’s only plumbing was a hand pump next to the sink. The linoleum was shot but mom painted it dark green and dipped wadded up newspaper in white paint and made blotches on it for a pattern. Baths were on Saturday night using a galvanized wash tub in the center of the kitchen wit water heated on the wood kitchen stove, younger sister first, then me, then mom, then dad. During the summer the landlord had a indoor bathroom put in and raised the rent. I attended another one room country school for 4th and 5th grade during that time. We couldn’t afford the rent increase so we rented another rural property back on the other side of town. I attended 6th, 7th and 8th grade in the last one room country school in this area. The following school year was when all grade schools were consolidated and the era of the one room country schools was over.

Thank you for this! I attended an open house at the school a few years ago. One highlight of that visit: Dr. Sam Lyle, who you reference in the video, was there that day. He had been a long time veterinarian in Seymour, and had treated our dogs for years. The day of the open house we took our new pup with us. Dr. Lyle had retired by then, but we wanted him to meet our new dog. He was very gracious in taking the time to fuss over the dog!

This is, by far, my favorite story! At 72 years young, memories flooded back of my older relatives telling of attending a 1 room school house in the hills of Indian Territory. Mom finished the 8th grade. My Dad, who could figure out answers to my high school Algebra questions, only went to the 3rd grade. He hated school and every morning he'd ride his horse to a skunk den, throw rocks in to it, until one would come out and spray him. When he got to school, the stinky boy was immediately sent home. Granny finally gave up and stopped making him go.

I told my husband that IF we were able to retire somewhere, Appalachia is the best place to go. See, I need somewhere super quiet because of my severe, chronic and debilitating migraines, and that sounds like a great place to live; fresh air, low crime, friendly people, beautiful scenery, and peaceful living. Thank you, JD, for sharing this amazing history of the “one room school” with us. I often also wonder the history of an abandoned building, because that’s astronomically interesting to me. Like you, JD, I envision people, from 100+ years ago, coming and going from the building, their manner of dress, their manner of talk, and everything else that happened back then.

My great grandfather was a farmer in Lincoln Co Tennessee. He and and some of his neighbors financed and built a country school house where my momma went to school during WW2. Her parents were working in the shipyards in California. My momma went with them but she spent a lot of time alone waiting for them after work. So they sent her back home to live with my granny's parents. When my momma went to school there in the 1940's the upstairs was a roller skating rink. It was not as big as public skating rings but it was great for about 20 kids. It's called the Mimosa community center in Fayetteville TN. I still have a cousin and an aunt(my momma's sister) that still live on Mimosa Rd. Drop by sometime, it 14 miles from Lynchburg where Jack Daniels distiller is.

Love these old school houses. When my daddy moved us to a more rural area, I attended a 2 room school house. I really liked it and one yr the principal was also my teacher. He was a very nice man and I've never forgotten him. He kinda reminded me of "Burl Ives"! I wish I could find a Sassafras tree. They have roots you can make tea out of. Pretty good chalkboards out of potatoes. My gr grandmother was a school teacher...my step-dad too, but he was strange. He had all kinds of degrees but no common sense. He did things that made me crack up..but I'd do my laughing in my bedroom with a pillow over my face to stifle my laughing. I'd never seen a man gag or jump up and down on his shoes when he was angry. He'd even turn the furniture upside down in his fits of anger. One time mommy even helped him to turn the furniture. I guess he thought that was normal. 🤣 It's awesome to see class reunions still taking place there. Thank you for another great story! 🖐😃
