We take a tour of a perfectly preserved one room schoolhouse built in 1898 and closed in 1959, in Edrans, Manitoba. Robert Smith, whose Great Grandfather helped build the school gives us a glimpse into how so many were educated in rural Manitoba.
Produced by William Plenty for MTS TV Stories from Home video on demand channel and hosted by Gordon Goldsborough of The Manitoba Historical Society, this is one of four short films contained in the show MHS Presents, still available on MTS TV.

I’m a big history nerd (I know, I’m lame) and I’ve been binge-watching classic cartoons. ComiColor’s Mary Had a Little Lamb took place at a schoolhouse. So, I started researching and I found this! This was a very good video! Thank you so much!

One room school houses were a much bigger part of American history than I ever realized. I use to think they were just country schools, but from the 1870's to the 1920's they dominated the American education system because people didn't have motorized vehicles to transport children very far. So the one room school house served very well because there could be little schools everywhere. Even so, children often had to walk miles to get to one. I began collecting original photos of one room schools a few years ago. Most were taken from the period of about 1880 to 1910, and I became fascinated with them. My favorites are early primitive ones showing the teacher posed with the children and a complete view of the school house in the back ground.

Great comment. It was like that all across western Canada in my Mothers day. Around here, in the Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada area, they set it up so the kids didn't have to walk more than a couple miles (3.2 km) maximum. It might have been even less. Big part of our history.

Just watching this, I'd like to visit this school house. I love American history and this is a large part of our history. I believe we should return to one room school houses. I know people will disagree, but I believe our education system would improve along with the kids education would improve one to two grade levels higher then they are now.

Geer School is a famous one room school house that all grades went to in Plymouth-Canton Michigan. There was a ruler that the teacher had to do and they had a Dunce cap if there was a bad kid.Geer school was a land donated by William Geer,That is how Geer School got its name.People now can still visit Geer School today for field trips.

Was the outside originally brick then mortar stucco added later? I assume the roof was re-done also. There was an old 1800's schoolhouse down the road from me in King Township Ontario. Years ago the roof eventually caved in due to rotting, etc.

My dad once told me, "Don't go to those schools, boy!". So, when I was nine, I set the school on fire.
