Audie Murphy was a highly decorated World War II veteran. He was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor as well as numerous awards for valor. He was also recognized by France and Belgium for his heroism. After the war, he returned to the U.S. and became and actor and musician. He struggled with issues related to PTSD. He died in a plane crash along with the pilot and four other passengers. The plane crashed into Brush Mountain, not far from Catawba, Virginia. In 1974, the Christiansburg Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars erected a monument to honor Audie Murphy. The monument stands just off the Appalachian Trail near the crash site.
I drove up Brush Mountain via Forest Service roads and then walked to the Appalachian Trail. Once on the AT, I hiked northbound along the ridge of Brush Mountain until I reached the monument. Thanks for watching!
