Sorry for your loss it is a blessing you could reconnect. As far as flipping north..I would head to Baxter where it is a little cooler and get as far south as time allows. Then finish the rest when able.

Cool that gadget gal is getting to hike with Navajo Joe. I gave some trail magic yo Navajo job at standing Indian in erwin right before beauty spot. That was back in late April or first week in May. I waa bug white bearded guy driving a velocity blue Colorado trail boss truck. I was cooking up hotdogs for the hikers.

For the decision to flip-flop, what part of the trail do you want to leave for later?

I'd look at the historic weather patterns, temperatures, rain and snow falls. Flip flops can be a one and done or multiple ones. It's easy to get up and down the trail via trains.

I've looked at a multitude of start dates and historic weather patterns and as far as I'm concerned, flip flop for the win!!

What is a flip-flop?

@@hsoderberg6505 It's where you break the hike up into parts. For example, start NOBO from Harper's Ferry to Katahdin. Then go back to HF and go SOBO to Springer to complete your hike. You can also skip over sections, say because of weather or maybe you left the trail for a while and you want to get back with your Tramily so you meet up with them til they finish, then you go back and complete the section you missed. Pretty much any hike that doesn't start at one terminus and go in one direction to the other end is a flip flop hike. The ATC website has some info on them too. Hope this makes sense and answers your questions.

I've looked at many flip flop options from different points on the trail, using weather and terrain data and I'm convinced it not only helps alleviate overcrowding and the negative impacts on the trail, but it also provides the best chance for a successful, most enjoyable, thru hike.
