Thanks Reba! It was a Miracle! If I was gonna have a heart attack on the trail, where I wound up is the top heart center in the southeast. Had a triple bypass and was admitted to the ER with a 30bpm heart. Recovery is going good … the heart rate is strong enough not to need a pacemaker and my caseworker is try to get me into a rehab facility close to the hospital (Mission in Asheville, NC). Even though I live in North Atlanta, I see the wisdom on being within shouting distance from my surgeon. Thanks so much for your concern and well wishes … I’ll be editing content and posting to my RU-vid channel (linked below) during rehab and possibly when I get home. They don’t want me to be alone the first two weeks after discharge or drive for the first six weeks after discharge. Thanks again and Happy Trails, Sugar Bear. youtube.com/@sugarbearspawtreks

Hey Ramdino! Great information about weight loss on the AT. I think too many hikers rely on empty sugar calories to make it through, rather than eating more fatty foods in the process of keeping pack weight low.

Butter can melt and real butter can go rancid. Ghee is more trail stable and doesn't go rancid as quickly

Last week I stayed at Siler’s Bald shelter and due to the bear closures at Russell Field and Derrick Knob shelters, Siler’s was a mass of very tired thru hikers

For the area where birds attack, an umbrella, some mount over your head or a bicycle helmet may help.

Good advice! Or the backpack. Hold on to the straps with your hands tucked under. DO NOT cover your head with your hands like I've seen some suggest elsewhere. Those talons can easily rip open those veins.

HYOH but my response to Payday would be that my tramily made my AT experience the best it could be. The Appalachian Trail is "a footpath for those who seek fellowship in the wilderness"

A footpath for those who seek fellowship WITH the wilderness.” This inscription, found on plaques at each end of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, beautifully sums up U.S. Forest Service land-use planner Benton MacKaye's dream to create what would become the longest continuous, hiking-only footpath in the world.

Just checked in with Sunny, she's still on trail. As I mentioned in a comment to your last vlog, she's considering getting off -trail. Would that make her ineligible to apply to your thruhiker list? She's basically alone as she's pushing thru pain & taking it slow. Just thinking if she really gets in a fix, it would be great if there were some options for her to get help. You mentioned about less-than-helpful comments, she got some along the lines as "it's a mind game, keep going," basically victim-blaming. Jumping off & on trail not an option, her home is in Alaska.

I can’t believe that we can’t not find the decency to let Bright Eyes to continue to stay and look for her dog. We have millions of illegals coming through our southern border but we can’t let one Canadian stay. Even her own Government would strip her of her health care if she stayed. Two nations that claim to be so compassionate have absolutely none to give to Bright Eyes. I find this whole situation to be appalling. Our two nations should be completely ashamed of ourselves.
