Got mine at 4 months old he is now 14 years old. Great family dog. Super loving. Soft smooth coat. Best dog I've ever had. Super smart. Looks where I point. And follows my eyes to see what I'm looking at. Loves my children. Great watch dog. Needs to be well socialized early. Needs a owner who understands how to be the pack leader. Exercise discipline affection, in that order. You must use calm assertive energy with this bread. Reacts poorly to punishment, you must use positive re enforcement training with food treats. Imo the best of the four Swiss mountain breads. This is a saint in a dog's body. Just an amazing loving regal creature.
Hey, I’m looking to get this breed for my family , I’m from the uk and I can’t find anyone that breeds them here do you know that breeds them ?if you from the uk of course
Breeder for these guys here Cost to keep 7-8, considering they destroy toys and are prone to accidentally hurting themselves. They are not for families with small children, they can nip, they are very loud and strong dogs despite the small size. Older kids is recommended. They shed all year round, so at least brush them daily. They are fairly independent, while suuuper loving with their owners, they also do enjoy time hanging out on their own. Not super great with other dogs, since these guys can be a very dominant breed. I recommend, recall being the first thing you nail in, they love running off to explore. Mine can do so and come back soon as their name is called. :] They're a good breed, extremely healthy despite lot of times having allergies. 10/10 would recommend if you want a buddy that has a full-on personality and is just great to be around and go on runs in the forest with.
Pretty crazy how relative experience plays a role in our perception. I've seen Mountain dogs (Sennenhund) all my life everywhere around me. Only now I realize how rare the dog is in regions other than Switzerland and western Europe, unlike the German shepherd. They also come in great size variety, the smallest one (Entlenbucher) weighs around 20-30kg , Appenzeller and Berner weigh a bit more , and the biggest breed (greater swiss mountain dog) can reach up to 75kg!
I really appreciate the fact that of all of the 4 types of Swiss Farm dogs/ Sennenhunden, this is the one type whose breeding programs were carefully monitored to bring a healthier more long-lived dog
Personally, I think if I got my hands on a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and an Appenzeller (both with all of the requisite Health Certifications for hips bones heart eyes whatever) be cross breeding them for a larger, stronger but still lean, athletic dog that was fleet of foot and would be hoping for "Hybrid Vigor", much like the reason I might want to cross a Rottweiler with a Doberman... or an English Mastiff with a Kangal thus producing the American Mastiff, our answer to the droopy big boned and awkward English Mastiff itself who does not look like it did a century ago. This particular cross produces a longer-lived , and, healthier dog with a tighter mouth, much fewer genetic health problems and not nearly as much drool that does actually resemble what the English Mastiff once looked like.
Hello! I am living in a small studio apartment and was wondering if this breed would be suitable for such a space? I would be able to take it for longer walks every day. Do they bark a lot?
I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of dog I have for like 3 years now I thought he was some sort of mix but I’m almost positive this is what he is now lol
