My other keyboard reviews: • Thomas' Keyboard Reviews
I'm Thomas and I do keyboard videos and reviews. Today we look at the Apple Aluminium Keyboard. This very common keyboard has gained some notoriety with the public, with some strongly liking these keyboards, and others equally strongly disliking them. Hope you enjoy the video!
The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on an Apple Aluminium Keyboard right now. I'd say this thing is pretty meh, but I know some others really love it. To each their own I guess."

I get to pick between two keyboards for tasks my laptop can't handle. This thing, or a generic rubber dome / membrane deal that's like 200 grams, cracked, left ctrl doesn't return all the way up so it feels weird under the finger, and worst of all its the short backspace, Japanese style layout. I still take the plastic piece of shit almost every time. Only exception is when I need the USB hub

that said, i don't absolutely HATE the switches, i much prefer them to old style rubber domes, and the butterfly switches are better, for whatever that's worth. i'll stick with my topre though.

I actually like scissor switches, i type a lot on a Cherry Stream XT, as it has fairly low actuation force. But flat tops are an absolute menace. I can manage on my laptop if i get very used to it, but at work when i worked at one Apple-loving company (shitheads), it was seriously interfering with my typing because i would type a lot and would notice it a bit late that i moved a whole key width sideways. I do have a Cherry MX Black stem mechanical though. But it's quite bulky.
@Spearra
@Spearra 6 лет назад
Siana Gearz I can absolutely recommend the "Perixx PX 1900" scissor switch keyboard. the keycaps aren't chicklet and are almost standard keyboard tall. the keycaps also have the concave shape that helps quite a bit build quality is ABSOLUTELY STELLAR. no squeaking no matter where you pinch, squeeze or press it at. it also weighs 2 pounds. little warning though, for scissor switches they happen to be a bit louder than usual. the spacebar in particular. the rebound is scary good and i can highly recommend! (if they're in stock! they aren't supplied very heavily so expect it to take a while to restock if they are out of them)

Some people hate how long the travel on any "normal" full-height desktop keyboard is. I've actually seen modest, non-elitist IT guys laugh at mechanical boards in general, just because they feel mechs would slow someone down. After using scissor boards on laptops for years, even I find it hard to move back to full-sized mechs, and judging by my interest in this channel, you can probably tell that I'm quite fond of them.

Please. Even IBM's LAPTOPS always had better keyboards than this. I'd rather sell half of my liver than exchange the T60's keyboard for one from the original MacBook Pro, let alone one of those atrocious butterfly models. Even IBM's rubber dome boards tended to have standards.
@atimholt
@atimholt 4 года назад
Matias switches use the ALPS design (they needed them for their own boards after ALPS were discontinued), but they improved the sound (removing the high-pitched spring singing), and thickened the metal so it lasts 50M cycles instead of just 10M. They have a quieted version, but I’ve got the clicky variety in my Keyboardio Model 01 (a split ergonomic keyboard with staggered columns, which I know is exactly the kind of thing Thomas (@Chyrosran22) hates. The Maple wood enclosure, totally reprogrammable firmware, thumb arc, and ‘palm button’ at the base of each thumb are very nice, too).

They are also some of the most unreliable keyboards I've ever seen. I work at an e-waste / refurbishing company and I can't even begin to explain how many I've seen that have multiple keys that don't work... and no not from water damage. Also like almost all apple products, the cables are way to easy to break.

YUP! I just had one with dead shift keys, along with a few dead letters. "No problem", I thought. "I'll just fix the traces on the membrane". THINK AGAIN! The thing is glued together with friggin construction adhesive. Dear god--you have to either heat, and nearly destroy the thing to get it apart.

I was forced to use this keyboard in graphics class at school, so I brought in my 60% and plugged it in to the USB passthrough. It's the only thing that keyboard is good anyways... Edit: I might add that there were multiple keys (missing cmd/option; don't remember which) that were completely unusable, and it hurt my hands to use for extended periods of time. I'll admit that the original comment was badly worded. Iirc, the board i brought in was an E-Element Z88 I had fit with custom caps and Gateron black switches. The RGB was unused because of the custom caps, and it's not like i was showing off either. Pulled it out, used it, noone cared. I brought it because It was easy to bring, and much more comfortable to type on than the mac keyboards. This semester. I'm back in that class again, and I occasionally bring my Topre TKL board to type on instead of the mac boards when I know I'm going to be doing a lot of typing that day, though its rare, and most of the time I'll just use my own laptop instead so the work won't get randomly deleted (they sometimes decide to "re-image" the macs because one student had an issue with photoshop or something).

I really wanna see you review the scissor switches of those old IBM thinkpad laptop, the real old T40 T42 and such, not those later one made by lenovo. They're super awesome imo, since there's a "bridge" sit on the rubber dome and the material of the rubber is similar to those used on topre switches (black rubber with similar characters), while the lenovo keyboards used cheap rubber. Their tactility and forces are so strong that right after you press thru the registration point, the rubber tend to keep you from bottoming out and launch your finger back up with strong force, I find myself "dancing" my fingers while typing on those old laptop keyboards.

I'd be very interested to see you contrast the Apple with the newer Lenovo "island" type keyboards like the 0B47190. These are laptop-style low profile, but the keycaps are still sculpted which I find much more comfortable than the flat keys on. They also use the Thinkpad tactile rubber domes.

I've had these flat top keycaps in my laptop for a long time and everytime I have to switch to type on a profiled top keycaps it feels really strange. My fingertips often get hung op on the edges of the profiles since I'm used to hover my fingers closely over the flat caps on the apple style keyboards. That being said I'm looking into buying an external mechanical keybord. I think I'll have to look for flat keycaps though.

Oh, I've been using the compact wireless version since 2010 or 2011 maybe and had no serious issues with it. Still find it extremely useful "on the go", as it's lightweight, compact, slim and replicates the laptop layout very accurately. That's convenient if you have to work with laptop or external keyboard switching from time to time. Never had any reliability issues throughout all this time, but for sure the keys aren't as comfortable and satisfying as in good mechanical keyboard. But for me it's the only one main issue. The extremely low profile makes it very comfortable for my hands, as tall keyboards are almost impossible for me to type on for a long enough time. So for some time it's not used in my main setup, but I'll still be happy with it on the go. It's also very quiet, that can be very handy is some situations. As for me, in general, not great not terrible, and has some very convenient features.

A different scissor switch keyboard I would be interested in is the ThinkPad keyboard. My main PC is a ThinkPad E585, which has such a keyboard, but with a numpad. I don't have experience with mechanical keyboards (yet), but I find it quite an interesting module. Initially I missed a lot of keystrokes on it, because it required a bit more force after the tactile bump to trigger, but after using it for ~6 months it works absolutely fine. The layout is also interesting as they extended the arrow cluster downwards and a lot of keys have different shapes and sizes (and quality of stabilization). As they sell the keyboard as a stand alone module, I would be interested in what you think of it as a stand alone keyboard.

Have you seen the Microsoft Modern Keyboard? It seems to me like a generally improved version of this keyboard.

this is pretty much how my M1 MacBook Pro sounds, I love it but it can't beat my Corsair K95 Platinum XT with Cherry MX blue switches , that keyboard is such a joy to type on

I don't know how, but I have this keyboard since almost 10 years and apart from the aluminium getting damaged from sweat over these years, symbols are clearly visible. Now, since I want to replace this keyboard with something better since it's getting hard for me to write on it due to short travel and to being a pianist (looking for a corsair k70 with browns (don't judge, I like its features and I know there's better keyboards)), do most painted/etched whatevertheydo keyboards really lose their symbols over time as everyone says or do they survive at least a couple years?

I have one of the bluetooth 60% ones because I needed a keyboard I can throw into a bag and take up minimal space, for that it's reasonable enough of a keyboard. The the full sized one boggles the mind, it's basically a full sized laptop keyboard when you don't need your keyboard to be thin and flat for stowage. Also not a fan of the scissor switch on them, for some reason the ones on my Lenovo Thinkpad laptops feel comparatively better.

It's actually pretty nice, and works well on my Mac. I like the extra function keys that it has, and it's pretty good for programming. I also like to alternate between browns, blues, and greens, which works pretty great for me, because I often get bored of keyboards after a while, so this adds a nice mix. I'm actually writing this comment on one of these.

I honestly quite like using scissor switch and chiclet keyboards. Maybe not the ones on modern macbooks which i find have way too little travel. I like the highly tactile feel and nice sound on most laptop keyboards. But as you said, typing on them for a long time starts to hurt. I dont use them for desktop computers though, where i will always prefer a mechanical keyboard (currently using a Tex Shinobi).

@wanderbolt9498
@wanderbolt9498 6 лет назад
a similar mechanism in the early 2010's macbook pros is slightly nicer... the travel is marginally longer and the keys are arranged slightly better, at least for a laptop, the keys are also black so they don't look terrible on well used models.The keypress is slightly softer on the bottom out... although I've developed a positioning on the keyboard with a finger always above backspace because mistyping is still really easy even after almost 5 years of constant use.

I absolutely love my A1243. Its probably the best keyboard that I've owned so far. I did try out my brother's Razor gaming keyboard and I always find myself faster and more accurate on the Apple keyboard. They provided me a keyboard at work which is a Dell KB216p, because it is similar to the feel of the Apple, but even though it is manageable for me, I still find myself more productive on my Apple. :)

I have lots of Mechanical Keyboards and I actually like this one. Got it for $0 from Staples. They had it on clearance for $20 but I had a $20 mystery coupon so it was free. Have been using it at work (8~10 hours a day) for almost 3 years now. I've had mechanical keyboards fail (double typing or keys wont press at all) in shorter time-spans.

I know it is terrible in every way possible, but I grew up on these laptop keyboards and i actually can type faster and more reliably on this keyboard than any other. I am getting better at full height though, and it is probably only a matter of time before I surpass my flat keyboard abilities.

I have the Matias version of this, because it supports multiple Bluetooth devices...And keys simply going bad has become a problem with the ones I've used for so many years that I've become interested in a multi-deviced Bluetooth mechanical. I've found the Hexgears Venture as a possible replacement, and I don't want the Khale Choc Whites...I do too much work around microphones. Is there any reason I should go with the Choc Browns over the Choc Reds, given that i come from scissor switches? I really have to think hard before I drop $159 on a keyboard...

I'm not much of a Mac person but I actually like using that kind of chicklet keyboard. There's no way I would replace my Unicomp model M or my Das with one of those, but they strangely feel better to me than the typical cheap rubber dome keyboard that you get for free with a Best Buy computer, even with flat keycaps. I agree that the ISO enter absolutely sucks, but Apple's "form over function" has always served them well so that's unlikely to change.

I've typed on someone's Macbook Air some time ago, and I remember that the keys were very short and had almost no key travel whatsoever, and they felt what I would describe as clicky, seemingly to make up for this. When I say this, I mean it felt rather like the power button on my laptop and many other electronics. I recall that they felt rather stiff, perhaps because of their nearly nonexistent travel distance. I'm presuming that this was the "butterfly" switches you mentioned. Could this be correct?
@TheGrayWolf81
@TheGrayWolf81 7 лет назад
Nope. The new MacBook Pros have butterfly switches. The MacBook Airs and older MacBook Pros have scissor switches.
@Lachlant1984
@Lachlant1984 3 года назад
As far as I know, the MacBook Air available at the time you typed this comment still used the older switches and didn't use the newer Butterfly switches. I personally think this Apple desktop keyboard which was reviewed in this video feels better than the keyboard on the MacBook Air, you are correct about the short travel distance.

Now take that feeling, sacrifice 3/4s of the travel, 100% of the reliability, and 70% of the joy away. That’s Butterfly keyboards
@strictnonconformist7369

@@IgnoreSolutions I traded in my 2016 15” MacBook Pro for my late 2019 16” MacBook Pro, which I got maxed out GPU and RAM, i9 2.3 Ghz, 1 TB SSD, with a HUGE factor being the keyboard, even though mine never failed, though I was overly careful to try to avoid giving it a reason to fail. Of course, less than a year later, Apple released M1 processors, making that MacBook Pro the last of the MBP Mohicans with Intel processors, and the insanity of learning even the cheapest M1 MacBook Air was faster overall. Of course, it wasn’t until last month or so when Apple released the 16” M1 Pro or M1 Max processors that they finally had 64 GB RAM available. And of course, they also run far less hot (Intel CPU laptops = geek birth control on your lap) and oh, they decided to not be all Thunderbolt ports so you don’t need dongles for a couple common use-cases, etc. and (even better!) NO TOUCHBAR, IT WAS REPLACED BY FULL HEIGHT FUNCTION KEYS! As a developer, the touchbar in place of a standard keyboard function key row was always an abomination, especially as the “shortcut” keys Apple made available for Xcode were of the dumbest possible way to use them, and you can’t fix it to be useful. Of course, earlier this year I bought an Ergodox EZ Glow with Kailh Box White switches, need to do dedicated practice on it, and make the built-in keyboard just the emergency-use keyboard.

I grew used to this keyboard since my work computer was a macbook air and this design makes for a laptop that thin. and that being my main non work computer nowadays (aka the shit I watch youtube on and play civilization naked on the bed while my desktop is downstairs) this keyboard is 100% better than any run of the mill non mechanical keyboard that most non enthusiasts use, so it makes sense that most people would love this when it's definitively an upgrade from what they are used to.

I mean, nowadays there are keyboards with dip switches that let you switch the win and the alt keys, effectively making it a Mac-layout. There are also keyboards that come with Apple-styled keycaps by default (that is, Command instead of Win)
