This 9-inch portable display allows you to add wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to any car stereo, as well as playback video media from an inserted USB drive and case video from your phone to the display. I reviewed the W109 last year, but this new Pro model improves on its software, adds dual Bluetooth support for Bluetooth audio output and its audio has been improved with the addition of an adjustable EQ.
My impressions match their earlier non-pro model that I reviewed this time last year. Its a capable portable display for use with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s unfortunate that after a year the pro didn’t get many refinements it needed to really make it shine. It’s much the same with a small incremental hardware and software bump, certainly not enough to be classed as a pro model in my opinion, I would have expected a lot more over last year's model.
Its EQ is certainly a welcomed addition, to help boost sound in older stereo systems, and its dual Bluetooth support for Bluetooth audio output offers a much better audio solution for car systems that just missed out on the more modern-day connectivity that today's modern cars have as standard now.
It’s unfortunate that I couldn’t get wheel controls to work alongside Bluetooth audio, and only play and pause from the system screen only worked for me. However, my VW system is a stock retrofit, and your own experience might be more successful. Another issue with Bluetooth audio was when playback audio in videos, which saw audio out of sync by around 1-2 seconds. I found this quite odd for Bluetooth audio to be this laggy, but switching back to AUX or FM audio seemed to easily work around this.
Calling and casting from Android had some issues too, and Android Auto itself was too low in its DPI for a screen resolution of this size, so I would hesitate in recommending this display if you’re an Android user. For iPhone users though, this portable display performed well. Wireless CarPlay was quick to boot, calling delay was quick, and I had no issues with reconnecting Bluetooth audio and CarPlay or Android Auto on reentry into the car. Casting from iPhone also performed better, just as long as you use AUX or FM for audio playback whilst watching videos.
The W901 Pro from Carpuride is a decent upgrade from its last display, and it is a great way to easily and very quickly modernise older cars and old stereos to make them more compatible with today’s mobile phones for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as handle video playback and cast media from them too.

It's shocking to me that every single review about carpuride pro on RU-vid fails to mention that you can't call with your phone anymore wjen you use the Bluetooth transmitter. I have sent my unit back because of this issue. Luckily carpuride has told me that they are working hard on it and in the next 2 months it should be fixed. By then I get it again. Fingers crossed.

Superb review pal. Just wanted to ask, when you were utilizing aux did you have to also plug an aux cord into your phone or did you simply plug the aux from tbe CarPlay device to the car’s aux and could stream music from your phone using Bluetooth with the phone and the CarPlay device?

Thanks. ☺️ You just connect CarPlay display aux to car stereo aux as it’s only aux out and not in on the display. Connection to phone is either wireless (BT and Wi-Fi) or USB wired for CarPlay / AAuto. You can use BT from a phone for just music or calling connection without going through CarPlay/AAuto

I’m just a little confused as I’m attempting to install this device on an older car that doesn’t have Bluetooth, and was thinking that if utilized the aux out while using CarPlay, that I would be able to connect my phone via Bluetooth to the CarPlay, and then the aux from the CarPlay would take the audio from the CarPlay to my car via the aux cord, so that I don’t have to plug anything into my phone for audio. Would this be possible? Thanks a ton for the help

Please watch the video at 14:19. It depends how your backup camera works but it shouldn’t interfere with it. Your stereo is only used for audio source.

I don’t think I have seen a display do android auto right yet. They all seem to pump out a low resolution. Someone said it’s my Google Pixel 3a but I don’t have a problem natively getting a wireless higher resolution/ DPI so it must be how the adapter works and its limitations 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for this. Much appreciated and a great video. One thing if you wouldn't mind confirming… Carpuride have said to me that making a phone call from an iPhone using the Bluetooth connection to my car wouldn't work due to echo and feedback, but you said it didn't seem to be an issue. My car is a 2010 Skoda yeti so it is VW group, but I think the Bluetooth system is quite low spec. Do you foresee any issues in collecting or making phone calls with an iPhone?

Do you get any significant call delay when calling over BT via your BT system in your Yeti? I assume you're talking about connecting the display to your yeti system over BT?

I haven't bought one yet as I heard about this 'issue'. Yes, connecting the phone to the Carpuride and the Carpuride to the Yeti, then making a phone call.

I have the 901 non pro model and calls connected to my car’s Bluetooth sound better than calls connected to the 901. I think the reason is the built in microphone on the 901 is not good. An external mic might work better but for now I use my cars built in Bluetooth for calls.

Thanks for the review. I knew this looked overpriced, but everyone seems to recommend these above other aftermarket units solely for the brand name. Have you ever reviewed a portable Android unit that allows use of navigation without Carplay or Android Auto?

Not yet. There is meant to be an android display that runs an android OS from coral vision, so you should be able to run an android nav app from it instead of CP or AA. None like this have landed for review yet.

I haven’t done one of these yet as I haven’t tested as many and so many models get discontinued in a year. All I can say is coral vision has better quality of hardware and software. If you have a BT enabled stereo and wish to use this for audio coral does this well. As does the spedal 860. You’ll find many are the same hardware just rebranded.

Hi Antony, so pleased I found your video as I have been bought a portable car player for my 2015 Kia Picanto. I am not sure if the brand I have is the same as the one you’re looking at but the navigation etc looks very similar. I am not to familiar with cables and ports in my car as it’s my first car since passing my driving test, but do you by chance have any guidance on locating the auxiliary ports on the inside of a car? I know you haven’t got the same car as me but I believe it would help me in knowing where to look as from first look I can only see the cigarette lighter port which I use to power the car player/ already installed Dashcam. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as I’m not sure what I’m looking for to allow the player to connect to my car speakers as the device sound isn’t the best quality and does sound a bit tinny and is often too loud for my passenger to hear anybody at the back of the car. I tried googling how to find the auxiliary port in my vehicle (if it had one) but I’ve been unable to find an answer on this. From your really comprehensive and helpful video I think you’re the guy to ask on this. Hope you can help. Many thanks Fran Cozza (technical novice and new driver)

Hi Fran, congratulations on passing your test and your first car. Fun times ahead!! ☺️ The Aux port (if it has one) is usually located in the central area of the dashboard, usually near to the 12v port to power the display. Sometimes they are located on the stereo itself or close to it. It’s a small round port that’s the same as a headphone port of a portable music player or mobile phone. Depending on age and spec of the car you have it may not have one. So you are better off using FM radio transmission instead where it sends the audio over the same radio frequency that the display is also told to use. Most displays allow this. If it’s a newer car with Bluetooth audio support, and the display also supports this too, that’s the best way to connect audio. You can also way consult your car manual for this port also. Or search for the manual online if it didn’t come with one. Hope this helps.

This display uses its own built in mic, regardless of if you have a mic in the car or not.

What is your number 1 recommended highway quality CarPlay unit? I don’t care about the dashcam and would prefer the 10in unit I think. I’m fact I’d order that the rest of the unit was higher quality instead of having a dash cam. I already have a high end 3 channel dashcam.

It’s good but maybe not as refined as Coral Vision products. They are improving with each new release. So in time they will get there. :) longevity shouldn’t be a concern with carpuride.

Why when I’m turn off the car the screen still on I have tu press the turn off bottom and when I start the day I have to push the on bottom is anyway can put like automatic detecte the engine?

Your 12 V port is likely still powered while the car is turned off. This shouldn’t happen forever, and eventually it should just stop maybe after a minute or two. Try getting out of the car and locking it out and looking back through the window and in a few minutes you should see the screen turn off?

BT audio? Yes this is how this works. Issues BT to first connect to WiFi then drops the BT connection to then connect to the cars BT for audio.

Carpuride is ok till something goes wrong with the unit then your stuck mine had got a cracked screen I contacted Carpuride regarding fixing my cracked screen they replied if I was to send the unit back to them they couldn’t guarantee they would receive it there words not mine the only option they offered was to buy a screen for $40 from Carpuride and fit it myself so not an option as I’ve no experience in replacing anything like this they also added that if i do be careful when doing it as it could cause more damage 🤦🏼‍♂️so no after care at all if anything goes wrong so stuck with a cracked screen very disappointing after sales care.

Unless they change their location often it should arrive just fine. I’m sure they are just covering their ass if it gets lost. Best option is to use a decent courier company with sign on delivery option, plus insurance. Then should it get lost you get your money back. They will need to do the same shipping or back to you so it’s a grey area who should be paying for this, ideally them if it arrived broken. 🤔

It will only fully work when connected to BT audio. FM and AUX won’t work with it that way.

Yes that's right. So once you have CP or AA up and running you connect the BT from your phone to the car stereo. Then wheel controls should work as you're basically controlling your phone at this point, and the phone is casting the CP/AA feed to the display.

if it has the option to go from carpuride to car stereo you can try that, but some displays don't work with all BT car stereos so you might run into issues, but it is worth a try. Otherwise, the more reliable option is phone to stereo via BT route.

Sure but you won’t be able to pass audio to the stereo if it doesn’t work. You would only have the built in speaker or you could pair or connect it to a speaker via AUX cable or BT

There’s no RU-vid app. The display can screen cast, so you can casting from your phone running RU-vid to the display instead.

No but you could buy a mount with a similar ball mount to attach it too. The screen is a little heavy so the mount needs some feet supports to carry the weight

I have the model W101 Carpuride unit. I’ve been using the aux plug in, I tried the Bluetooth mode as well, the only problem is I don’t hear any of my notifications that come through like navigation directions, text messages….etc. But when I switch over to aux mode I hear all my notifications come through. Has anyone ran into this problem? I’m using Apple Carplay

All I can think of is that navigation and calling come via the BT audio channel on some systems, so if that is being used up by the BT audio then it has nowhere to go. If i remember isn't there two ways to do BT audio? make sure your phone is connected to the car system and not the display to the car BT stereo. If that's possible on this one.

@@CarPlayLife there could be I’m not sure, I’ll do a little more testing around and see…..One thing I noticed in your video on that unit is something called BT transmit. I don’t have that on my unit. All I have is FM transmit. I would hate to have to buy another model just so I can have that BT transmit.

Ah! So it's a different model to this one then. If it only has FM or Aux output, it is not going to work over BT. You can try to connect to BT afterwards method, but if the display isn't supporting BT audio out of the box, then it may not utilise the BT audio signal for navigation etc. or try altering the volume during siri or navigation to see if volume is down low on this audio channel.

This thing and the 103 pro are junk Neither can reconnect to your car Bluetooth after first time connecting. It's annoying that you have to manually connect it every time to your cars.

Shame. What car are you trying this in? Some car BT aren’t that great to work this way. I’m sure my golf reconnected just fine after the first connection. 🤷🏻‍♂️
