"When good taste becomes mandatory its not good taste anymore its just manners" -Genius

What a brilliant and thoughtful guy. I'm inspired to look more into Perl and his other projects because of these videos. Thanks.

"When good taste becomes mandatory, it's not good taste anymore; it's just manners..." Which then of course devolve into mere mannerisms....

Perl is a scripting language, so you don't really use it to build a large application, it's usually for smaller tasks. But in my experience it has been a hell of a lot of fun to use, so I'd say its a good comparison.
@UltimaXG2
@UltimaXG2 11 лет назад
I know, but for the sake of visualization, I prefer to call them vertical and horizontal. Like, a duck species can't change horizontally into a crocodile, but through vertical changes, it can converge. It's just so that other guy can understand it as a descending tree.

4:41 I wonder what Larry's seen that he wouldn't try to do in Perl? I'm guessing a C compiler or something crazy complicated like that.

Yeah, It's rare to see someone being asked their opinion and they start delivering a refreshing string of 100% correct perceptions instead of just opinion. Excellent stuff! :)
@UltimaXG2
@UltimaXG2 11 лет назад
Also, to clarify, an example of vertical change would be divergence of Canine X to Vulpes vulpes and Canis Familiaris. Horizontal change would be like a crocoduck.

Everything just kind of comes together really fast in Perl. Nobody else can read it, though. :o)

"Good taste" in programming is simply focusing on solving a specific set of problems, writing good code, and presenting it intelligently to the user.

The main thrust of evolution is completely fact. Some of the small stepping stones along the way haven't been discovered or aren't set in stone, but the theory in itself is absolutely fact. There are no "good" scientists that reject evolution, just as there are no "good" scientists that reject gravity even though we do not know everything there is to know about gravity.

what about c++? is it fun? (i mean, i know not as fun as playing on the ps3 but is it boring or what?)
@LanceDirk
@LanceDirk 11 лет назад
C++ can be a pain. Of all the languages I've used, it does the fewest things the make things easy on the coder. Most languages will make assumptions about what you're trying to do and take care of the plumbing of your code. C++ does none of that. That said, I find the extra challenge of C++ fun sometimes. Also, by being requiring more information from the coder, it gives you better insight/control into the compiler. It's certainly more powerful than Perl.

i will say i firmly stand by python as both being way better and way more cool, got to 2:00 though and it's nice to know how he feels about software patents

Yeah, right? It's pretty much impossible not to smile when he says things. Also, yeah, when you use PERL for what it was meant for, it's just wonderful. Everything comes together lightning quick. Unfortunately, you'll be the only one who can read it. :L

More like you Shouldn't program large applications in Perl. I am currently taking a break from building a text based game in Perl, I should use something more powerful, but I'm too lazy to learn something more powerful.
@EclecticSceptic

Please refer to my original comment where I said that ... Also it's impossible to do anything productive in computer science and not be logical, it's just the practical application of logic. Like most people he compartmentalises his thoughts.

Well I've never programmed with perl, but he's an eminent computer scientist. So yeah, logical.

so by that rationale religious people are generally not nice people? I'm sure your reply to this will be about taking some horrific leader, nation or group that does unspeakable things to others but my experience of Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Mormons, Muslims and any other religious person I've come across has always been very positive in general.
@Maddolis
@Maddolis 11 лет назад
For the future, people who argue against evolution aren't taken seriously in any science-based argument. It's accepted as fact, whether or not we know 100% of the details to 100% accuracy.

Yeah but if I remember right my original reply to canufi had to do with him hating PERL because the guy who created it is a Christian. I'm not a religious person myself but I don't believe in bigotry.

Please tell me more on how believing in a God makes you illogical, if that is your case we should just ditch Quantum physics and go back to the stone age as i'm pretty sure Max Planck had belief in a God.

+imhellag Microsoft? Dude, when it comes to (ridiculous) patents Microsoft is not even _remotely_ close to Apple for whom it's not uncommon to register 30-40 patents *every week*!! Apple are basically working 24 hours a day to prevent everyone on this planet from developing both software and hardware.

Arguing on the internet getting you far? I do like the fact that you played devil's advocate, even when you were dealing with illiterate and closed minded individuals. I am concerned that you may be correct in your assumption that it's not worth your time because I don't think the majority of people who see your comments could understand them. Mind you, you started making random claims too(99% of the population are convinced all intellectuals agree with them? Have a link to that study?)

Sorry Larry. I don't believe you because I don't believe that shirt. Maybe on the surface you're a hipster (see 'tache and shirt), but underneath all that I suspect you're really just a ... a ... a hipster. You finished by saying I should listen to you if you talk about theology. Then you laughed self consciously. Sorry, Father Larry. Good night.
