Court Pendu Plat is a very rare, very old apple. The name probably means ''short stalk' in French. Believed to have been introduced to Britain by the Romans, it was widely cultivated in the days of Queen Elizabeth the First, and known as 'The wise apple' as it blossomed very late and so was not damaged by frost. It is now esxtremely rare, most people have never head of it, and of those who have heard of it, most have never seen or tasted one.
Light to medium but fairly regular cropper, small flattened apple, very rich flavour with a touch of pineapple which evidently was passed on to its descendant Suntan (Cox and Court Pendu Plat cross from 1955) whcih as I have mentioned elsewhere has wild tropical fruit flavours and long keeping qualities which it seems to have got from the genetics of this rare old apple.
The first written record is from 1613. No apple has any reliabkle rcords going further back than this, and it is lkely that this fruit was passed from gardener to gardener across the generations for many centuries. It was widely grown in France and Germany.
Rosanne Sanders says this apple should be picked in mid October and eaten December to April. It makes a small tree.
An extraordinary apple which MUST NOT be allowed to go extinct.

Dear Stephen, I have watched your video on the Pendu Plat. I appreciate it very much. I just planted mine. I live in north east Ohio, USA. I have fenced it off from rabbits and deer. But now will spend time worrying about success. I am a Classicist who has become very interested in ancient Roman gardens. So this apple is an important addition to my project.

If you want things Roman, consider also planting Decio.

Very cool history on this one. Like eating an antique apple. Great video.

Great video. You remind me of people like Gerald Finzi, who helped to save apples from extinction. Great work you are doing.

I know you advise only keeping one of these but if this one is successful, I hope to add another. This one I have put in a large pot as my wife and I plan to move when I retire. Thanks again for a delightful presentation.

"Talking apples" is a very normal thing to do here in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee and Western North Carolina.

While researching apples to try in the back yard and looking at Court Pendu Plat, I stumbled upon Court Pendu Rose, which has a floral taste profile and blooms a few days later than CPP. Don't know if it can handle our summers - hot and dry - but it is grafted in and I await results in several years. With your encouragement, I have also included several other older apples: Lamb Abbey Pearmain/1804; Rambour Franc/1535; (Court Pendu Rose/1300?) and Edelborsdorfer/1175. Rambour Franc came out with debut crop this season: quite good. Someone described the look of Court Pendu Plat as medieval: perfect to bring to Renaissance Faires!

Planted one of them last year here on the island of Öland in southern Sweden, grew vigorously on MM106. Looking forward to tasting fruit some day.

Court pendu plat means short hanging flat IIRC. Plat as the apple has a flattened appearance and court pendu as the stalk or "hanging bit" is short. Hopefully I will be able to add this, Pitmaston Pineapple, and Orleans Reinette to my collection next year.

So, via your advice I'll now have 2 Suntan apple trees on B9 coming this April of 2019' that I'll be planting straight away with much anticipated excitement for sampling of this off spring from the Court Pendu Plat. Your a great person Stephen Hayes for sharing all of your experience with your Heirloom Apple Trees.

I hope you have another kind of apple tree on hand to provide pollen for your Suntan trees.

kingdavidapple I most definitely do, Thanks for your response with a very knowledgeable inquiry. I planted Cox Orange Pippin so I’m pretty sure it will be a compatible pollination source. Happy growing!

@@keithashline505 I didn't notice it was you, Keith, or I would not have asked, since you've got plenty of others in the making. BTW, it often happens that one or both of the parents of a given apple variety will not successfully cross for seed set. COP was crossed with Court Pendu Plat (as pollen parent, & the pollen was probably kept frozen from the previous season) to produce Suntan. As long as you have something else still blooming when Suntan opens flowers, late in the line-up (and that other is not another triploid) your Suntans should do fine.

Hi Stephen, You mention a list, so what would be your list of apples to plant from the point of view of preserving the heritage? Good videos. Really enjoy them.

I have planted a cider variety called Perthyre (originated in Rockfield Nr Monmouth) bought from Paul Davis of Dolau-Hirion Nursery, which also seems to be very late coming into leaf and I expect will also blossom late.

What's your experience with disease resistance on CPP? I know of one in an overgrown orchard (trees planted too close well over 20 years ago), and there's basically no scab on them despite being around varieties with noticeable scab and being close enough together that most of the trees are touching each other. I found one or two tiny bits on one or two CPP apples but I really had to look to find it. And this is on a site with no fungicide.

apple recognition N london ,I have found a giant cooking pearmain on a 6 meter tall tree that has a base I cannot get my arms around ,I cannot find anything else like it , its very long and pointed but as round as a big bramley , it cooks up amazing sweeter than bramley , it looks like a giant adems pearmain but some are 3or4 times the size , its hardy covered in green leaves and under ripe massive apples and I hope it survives this storm that coming as it maybe a one of a kind ! WTS !

If I was going to attempt to breed a new variety it would probably be Court Pendu Plat x Pitmaston Pineapple or Pitmaston Pineapple x Suntan. Flowering times could be an issue though.

You'd probably have to freeze CPP pollen from the previous season to use, as I expect was done to create Suntan, or keep Pitmaston pollen in the 'fridge until CPP or Suntan bloom. BTW, Suntan is a triploid - a third set of chromosomes - which, although not fatal to the tree, disables the usefulness of its pollen. If its pineapple flavor you're after, you might also consider crossing with Ananas Reinette. Sounds like a worthy project!
