Finally a review who’s use to VR and can get an honest opinion from someone who has experience from VR, not someone who just get amazed by Vr /AR itself
This is actually one of the "legitimate" reviews out there. You mentioned the other existing headsets and not just placed the Vision Pro on a freakin shiny pedestal like it's the most ground-breaking piece of technology to exist.
I've heard several folks including Mike say the Apple Vision Pro is like owning the best TV you've ever seen. As a VR gamer and content consumer, that makes me so excited for the future of VR and microOLED headsets, of which we can be confident that several are in the works presently. 🤩
It is so damn nice to see a actually VR person try this device. And nice to see it is 100% what most of us expected. Maybe with slightly disappointing passthrough and FOV for a $3,500 device. I mostly like VR for games and beatsaber, so this is not for me, but fun to see.
That is the comment I put up above. I actually went to the Apple Store and tried them on my friend works at the store in the Westchester mall and I only use all my VR my quest three my PS VR two for gaming and I realized this is not for that, actually I’m not even sure what the purpose is because I’m not wearing mine to watch movies even though you can with the quest three I’m not using it for work. I don’t think I ever would so I’m not even sure to me VR glasses are always about the games After I played Resident Evil 4 last year I was hooked while I still get motion sickness with some games I enjoy them a lot. I’m just not sure what the purpose for these VR glasses are if it’s not for gaming are people really spending this much money to watch a movie it just feels very gadgetry and that’s pretty expensive to just buy used and then end up not touching again I think once they have more games available then I’ll come back. I also don’t like the fact that they don’t have controllers and yes with the quest three you could use your hand to do a lot of things but to play games you need controllers and I don’t know about using a regular controller like a PlayStation controller with VR, I think you need something for your hands and I’m sure in the future Apple will come out with them and they will be an extra thousand dollars with the version 2
@@PC_TV_73 Yeah, 100% same for me. To me it shows a big disconnect between what Apple created, and what I hear most VR enthusiast say. And yeah that is skewed by the fact that most VR HMDs are currently for gaming. But I have many HMDs (5 at this point) and like you I Could watch movies in them, but I don't. I don't use a VR headset for ANYTHING that I can do on my desk or laptop computer. At the end of the day a headset is a headset, and the "wearing" something on your face is always gunna be a big downside. On I side note if I want to watch videos while working out or doing chores, I use xReal AR glasses, for the very reason of the lighter form factor. I honestly believe if you gave me Apples $3.5k product for free, I would struggle to find a reason to use it, and I use VR and AR daily. That is their biggest issue imo.
$3500!!! Are they having a laugh??!! That's like $5,500 AUD, but likely more. I mean this device looks fairly nice, not groundbreaking or anything. Just another incremental upgrade to mobile VR. And coming from Apple, I expected no less. Honestly after finding out the price I expect more now. Let's be real. VR devices are still novelties. They're not 'daily drivers'. All these people I see online using them in public won't be doing so within a month. We've all been through this. We get a new device, say 'wow' for a few days and then pretty much stop using it. Just too much effort and still not 'good' enough to use all the time compared to just scrolling on your phone. Hell, until they're the size of regular glasses. Can just put them on as easy as regular glasses. And have FOV and Resolution of the real world they'll never be something CONSTANTLY used like a phone. Yes we're making progress to that stage. People spending this type of money are the ones funding it. Thanks I guess
@@bruddaozzo it's all gimmick, who needs 70 inch discord window, 50 inch timer, 100 inch mobile browser etc while taking like 200 degrees of your surrounding? The resolution is still laughable, this can't even replace 1440p monitor.
@@Slurpy2k8 I don't think OP meant that everybody else is a liar. The problem with many (non-VR) channels is that they don't have good reference points of the VR market. If someone doesn't regularly review VR tech and the Apple Vision Pro is the only VR headset that they used, then that person's opinion might not be very insightful. You need reviewers that are able to contrast the capabilities of this headset and compare it to other headsets. I watched a lot of the coverage on the Apple Vision Pro, it's sad that a lot of it is not that insightful (some channels are good though). Many content hinges on what the (futuristic) Apple VR product could be in X years, but few actually focus on what it currently is. Nobody is treating the Quest 3 or the PSVR2 in the same preferential way Apple is being treated. Much of it feels like your typical hype content and an extension of the Apple PR team.
The refresh rate is also super low. Might as well just get a cheap Meta 2 or even a cheap Pimax 5K Super that can do 180 Hz if rhythm and fast moving games are your thing. You'd be overspending by $4k.
I have tried it out myself, and yes the Quest 3 I have is just better in terms of refresh rate (at least when I tried shaking my head) and FOV. So I know what you both mean.
Honesty is what I like about mikes videos, normally people who buy tech are blinded by the truth. Well done a breath of fresh air review that I believe
... And yet it's still absolute fucking TRASH compared to Meta's Codec Avatars (even the stripped down version using a very similar iPhone powered quick & dirty face scan that they showed off at Connect w/ Quest Pro a few years back). You can tell which has been in development for over a decade and which is a relatively recent project. 🤷 Meta realizes this tech doesn't make sense to actually launch to the public until they can deliver their mind-melting full-fat tethered PC powered version shown off most recently in Lex Friedman's 2nd Mark Zuckerberg interview fully on standalone (hopefully w/ late 2025's co-designed w/ LG Quest Pro 2). And this is because what they could ship now, while basically guaranteed to be better than Apple's current version of Personas (even according to where Codec Avatars was w/ the iPhone scan + Quest Pro powered Connect demo from literally multiple years ago), would still be uncanny and uncomfortable at best or do some level of well poisoning at worst (as Apple's very poorly received Personas are currently doing now).
Just watched this video on the Vision Pro and it was amazing. Review is very accurate - feel the same way: incredible as a new platform, but not for gaming
7:28 every review I've seen until this one has stated the charging cable can't be removed from the battery. thank you for including this shot to demonstrate it really can be removed!
Great video. One of the most fascinating aspects of watching many Vision Pro reviews has been the reaction of professional online personalities to their own “personal”. They have been universally panned while to me, the viewer they’re not bad at all. They might not look exactly like you but they capture your facial expressions and convey emotions well. I think they are good enough for professional calls.
Sadly it's Bradley thought it was great, and several others who originally thought it was weird got used to it like MKBHD has said. I think if they can capture hair better, especially longer hair, it would be really really good.
@@CGingerbreadman yeah, there are definitely exceptions like out of 30 maybe 2 or 3 liked it straight away. Lol, Bradley even disagreed with people trying to talk smack about his persona. It IS the hair along with that smooth texture that’s unnatural but once I got past the initial “uncanny valley” feeling I was very impressed by how well it captured movement and expressions.
This is the review I've been waiting for. While others might default to some tech reviews or influencer opinions. I wanted to hear this information from a man who is the king of VR.
Mike, this is one of the best Apple Vision Pro first impression videos. I absolutely love this clear consise, informative and very well put together conclusions. I've tried 4 or 5 VR headsets, so I know enough about what you are saying and what I've heard from others that all your opinions are great ones. The persona is an interesting one. Personally I don't find it too bad, but that's probably coming from a technology view point as I work in IT. However I can see in a short future with just a small improvement this being socially acceptable, it's just so new though. 👍
The last headset I tried was the PSVR1, so even a Quest 3 would seem super sharp to me. As far as the feedback goes, Apple should make dual rings that you could wear on a finger on each hand. The rings could give vibration feedback to touch/textures without violating the hand input philosophy.
its so surreal to see this headset finally in the hands of the (rich US) public great to hear this from a XR user's perspective, I can't wait to see where this goes in the future!
i think the fact that the quick menue in my meta Q3 is pixelated although they know the usecase and can calculate how closely people look at it is proof enough that they underdeliver on that level to make the apple device pop more.
Thank you mate! Great channel btw, I’ve watched a lot of your videos. I’m going to be hosting a private event in London next week. You’re welcome to come and try it.
Everyone is talking about the Apple Vision Pro in the VR community, but the really big news nobody is mentioning is the Metro Awakening VR game coming up. Metro is a popular franchise, and that game coming to VR, especially if it's VR exclusive, will probably be almost as big of a deal as Half-Life: Alyx, assuming reviews are good.
Arizona sunshine 2 was 50 bucks for 5 hours gameplay. Hope it isn't built with quest 3 in mind and pcvr and psvr2 get the same low polygons ,less fog but upgraded textures. Games developers don't have the freedom for creativity if the lowest console can't run it. So i don't expect much of iy. But i hope i am so wrong. But half life alyx isn't built with android vr in mind and it shows..maybe quest 6 can run it but at that time half life alyx is old school
As a layman but still an Apple fanboy with multiple devices within my household I’m still satisfied with my quest 2 yes I’ve not upgraded to the 3 as watching movies etc on big screen and native Netflix Amazon Disney apps are still good enough for me and don’t justify the price tag of the AVP, I’m still not sold on MR /AR but your review I think is spot on especially the term “laptop for your face”
Cheeky "like" done Mike! You've been my go-to source for the latest and greatest in XR/VR since 2017, capturing my interest when I first delved into the immersive world of VR. Your consistently insightful reports keep me well-informed about the cutting-edge developments and anticipated releases in this dynamic field. Many thanks for your dedication, and have a safe journey back home. By the way, your canine companion is absolutely adorable-Bow Wow!
Apple should add optional manual controls, gaming would be much more viable that way. Just like a touchpad being enough for normal tasks but a mouse being needed for gaming.
Once I learned the operation I was good. However the fov, pass thru blur and the weight is a bit of a problem (my only gripes but pretty big ones). The Disney movies are incredible. One I learned to use safari instead of apps it became more of what I expected. In terms of games and VR, meta is better.
Looking at your video and MKBHD's videos on this device. I think you were recording in full HD and this can cause the head set to slow down considerably. I'd say retry some of the videos stuff you did with it screen we recording and see if you still see all the wobbling. This is coming from some one who doesn't like apple products.
I love how you said "I face-timed my wife" and GT's face was at the bottom corner. :p I still think you looked like his spirit-guide when you called him.
After a while i decided it was cool and hopefully will inspire a standalone pc vr headset since that is what i would really like and now it seems a little more possible
I agree with everything you said except that spatial video isn't a gimmick. Much like the lenticular front panel it's nothing like in the advertisements whatsoever, just standard 3D video.
Great review of the Apple Vision Pro. Instead of you mentioning Bigscreen beyond as the top resolution headset, I wished that you (also) mentioned the top dogs PCVR headsets: Pimax Crystal(2880x2880) or Varjo Aero(2880 x 2720), or even Varjo XR4(3840x3744). That way it would show not only the resolution gap is less of a jump, but also that the current PCVR technology is not far of if anyone is interested doing the same in a PC environment. 🙂
Indeed, the Varjo XR-4 is in the same price range (4k) and has a higher resolution, larger FOV and better passthrough (at the moment not....., because the XR-3 had a better passthrough than the AVP, the XR-4 should also have better passthrough than the AVP)
Pretty amazing that we now have tech that’s significantly better than what was envisioned in futuristic sci-fi movies from just a decade or two ago (i.e. Spacial video “memories” from Minority Report) .. Can’t wait to get a VP.
I wonder how long until they plan on adding collab features like how hololens could share what the others were seeing. Could see an all mac graphics studio putting this to use so a supervisor could walk around and see peoples work and even 3D models. And could also make it so you could have embargo work happening in the same space.
I have also dabbled in a few other VR headsets. I was hoping this could be used for gaming but doesnt seem like it at least for the moment. Wish apple would have added some features that wouldve blown everyones mind but didnt. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what developers can come up with. Thanks for the review.
When I got my rift cv1 I was sure VR headsets would almost completely replace monitors within 10 to 20 years. Then nothing really happened for years. This feels like the first big step in that direction. Very cool
Cellphones have been crap for more than 10 years, but everyone had one even before the smartphones arrived. If VR didn''t become mainstream yet, it never will, it's not an hardware problem.
This is like monitor without a HDMI input. The only thing you can connect it to is an Apple MacBook. It's like a Samsung TV but you can only view movies bought from the Samsung ™️ shop or from Samsung ™️ Laptops. PlayStation 5? Forget it.
@@cube2fox to clarify, I have no interest in this specific device personally. But the combination of high enough resolution to be viable as a display for text, with good enough passthrough to use a keyboard, and a clear focus on productivity rather than just games is a step forward in my book. I still think some future AR headset will become mainstream. In some fields at least. Anywhere that extra screen real-estate is useful. Anything that deals with 3D models
I have heard this term "primarily for app developers or early adopters" quite disturbingly for the Quest Pro too. We all know what happened with that headset by now (discontinued). So I am eager to see how this headset will play along. In my opinion this is just another test case for experimental features. But I really hope this pushes VR tech in general so maybe we get some serious new upgrades from Meta and Valve in the future.
@@SINfromPLIt is still supported, but discontinued as in they won't order new parts. So once Meta has used up their current inventory, production will end.
How did you like New York? Will you have any issues with the AVP when you get back to your home? Do you have any clue what the killer app will be for this device?
Ive been waiting for someone who is into consumer VR headsets to do a review of this and so I really appreciate you making this. Ive been following your stuff for a bit and when I saw you did a review I clicked immediately. Great review. Thanks.
I noticed that you only ever used the finger tap feature, to interact with content and elements in the windows…. Did you also try reaching out and manipulating windows with your hands? Like touching a giant iPad that just so happens to be floating in your environment?
Would love to know how my gigapixel images would look and feel in the headset. Of course only in a browser because there is no Steam support, where I have a small gallery of these images. But the price tag is too expensive to just have a look and I don't want to develop an app yet for Apple (or better pay for developing a custom App). But it looks like the second or third generation I have to buy even when I'm owning no Apple device myself yet.
Great first impressions. I have to say, despite your criticism of the Personas, I find them to be quite incredible, especially since they only seem to take about 25 seconds to create. Yes, they look a tiny bit wonky.. a little overly-blurred or something... BUT, they do an incredible job of translating the emotions and facial movements and even eye movements of the person in the headset. This is the beta version and I'm already very impressed. I can't wait to see what they look like in a couple years! Currently you can puff up your cheeks and make faces, and wink and do all sorts of things that I've never seen any other "avatar" pull off before. Sure, comparing it to live video it looks less realistic.. but isn't it amazing that that's the comparison, instead of to a cartoony Wii Mii character like Meta was suggesting about a year ago? It's very, very impressive to me.
The reason the FOB is so much shorter vertically is the 1.4 inch micro OLED displays. It’s not their small lenses because you can see the edges of the display if you get close enough but these are the largest micro lets out on the market right now.
Thanks for the explanation! No matter how good the resolution is, having such bad FOVs compromises the usability of the device so dramatically compared to the Quest 3 that I can't believe that Apple would waste $1000 on displays that are so inadequate!
@@stephenbard1590 100% agree with you! I have try both the Apple Vision And Quest 3 and watching moving is much better on Quest 2 and Quest 3. Because you feel like you are watching in a huge iMax. And the Apple Vision Pro is like a small movie screen showing imax. I think is is a waste of money because the resolution is not that much higher than the quest 3.
I think what makes me most excited about the Vision pro is what the competition is going to cook up in response to it. Although part of me worries that this will just normalize $3500 headsets lol
Do you need to book an appointment for a demo or do you just walk in and wait? What's the wait like if there is one? No idea how this works. Would have to fly from the UK for a trip. Would do other things while there of course.
Thanks. I was waiting for a good non-biased review of this device. As expected, this is essentially an enterprise device that apple is attempting to market to home users (wealthy ones). Hopefully this does lead to fierce competition, and maybe we'll see some AR glasses from Google and others.
Great overview Mike! This is basically what I thought the Quest Pro would be when that was announced. It's way too expensive for me to consider, especially as MR is just a fringe use case for me right now, but it's really exciting to see a taste into the future. I would expect by about 2030 these MR/spatial computing devices will be on the verge of going mainstream and hugely impressive.
Bet apple is gonna release a "vision controller ™️" in a year that's just like a pair of quest controllers with slightly fancier materials and charge 1000 bucks for them
I’m still a little confused about spatial videos. Is it basically a 3D video displayed on a flatscreen within VR, that has a 3D look to it? If so, I was really hoping it would capture the entire room so to speak, and really put me back in that environment. I guess that might not be possible yet?
I agree with your impressions. I disagree with who see the future in this device. If I have to work for productivity I’d use a laptop/desktop. Much easier, comfortable for long time (a headset after 1 or 2 hours is ALWAYS worst than a free head). Nice tracking, lens and resolution (the only true benefit it has imo), but it is a natural evolution that we will see on all devices at lower price. I need to work with photo editing, I prefer spent money for high end professional monitor than a “spatial PC”. This device, as you said, will become better, more optimized, but hardly it will become less expansive, it’s Apple. Last thing, for me VR means gaming, and here you just don’t have it… For me it is a Huge NO thanks. Thank you for making this video, always great quality content.
The lack of haptic feedback isn't that big of a setback for gaming it's just something you'd get used to, and i'm sure as they improve their headsets tracking games will not feel slow
I believe that if your work requires you to stare at a monitor all day long. "This headset is for you". As for me, I am happy with my Quest 3 and PSVR2. Although, they're both much cheaper than this Apple Vision Pro. I still wouldn't trade them for it. It just doesn't offer what I want... Thanks Mate for another excellent product, Review Video. Very Helpful! 😉👌🙋🏻♂️🫶
I am not the target user for the vision pro, I don't have any i-products but I do have a question. I know it can link to a Mac Pro and become its monitor, but is it capable of being the computer on its own? Can it run actual computer software or only phone and i-pad apps? If you need to do the kind of work that people use desktops or laptops for can it do it? Or in other words is it a computer replacement? If it is I can understand the pricing and it makes it a bit more practical. Either way, it is not in my range of use, and I appreciate you sharing your perspective.
Hi, Mike. I think testing this device should be in the way a computer is tested. Examples: 1. How many apps support visually and performance wise before degrading. 2. What apps benefits of this format. Ex Maps, Trello (Kanban), Project (Gantt), Tech diagrams (autocad etc). This may sound boring but this tries to be a working device. I was expecting your review for your solid knowledge on this. Generic reviews were not good enough, thanks for your work.
Hey Mike, great video as always. I have been following you since 2016 when I got my first serious VR headsets, the Oculus Rift CV1 and the HTC Vive. Before that I was rocking the mobile Samsung Gear VR on my Galaxy 7 LOL. Your still my favorite VR content provider on RU-vid and I trust your opinion and judgement wholeheartedly. Thanks for this detailed and unbiased rundown on the Vision Pro. I am excited about getting one in about 2 or 3 years when there is a Vision Pro 3 and the cost comes down to no more than $2,000. Hopefully by then there will be some decent software to make it worthwhile.
@@theo5675 Maybe, either way I will wait till 3rd generation when it has actual software and not 2d ipad apps and the price drops to half. In the meantime my Quest 3 does everything I need it to and plays games.
Did anyone ask for "spatial computing?" I REALLY can't see myself working with a headset for 10 hours. I'm happy with my games on Q3, but the spatial video thing seems really interesting.
Looking over its bill of materials it is easy to understand why it’s$3500 but there are plenty of places Apple could cut back if they want a larger audience. The outside screen, changing from a micro oled screen to a led for example probably cut this down significantly.
Apples ‘IN BETA’ can go on for years, look at Siri. How long was that in beta. I’ll see what they do to the next one apple vision as they have already bought out the pro?
