Wow, thank you so much for this quick comparison, it really does justify my AW Ultra purchase. I'm switching from a Garmin Instinct 2 which I had for it value, but I really miss having an AW for its smartwatch features. Great to see that I can get all the features I would miss from Garmin if I'm willing to download some apps (and pay for subscriptions) as well as give up a couple of sensors/data at certain times in order to extend the battery life to match. I really was considering an Epix 2 but now I'm truly sold on the AW Ultra. It meets all my needs and most of my wants. Thanks again!!

I've had Garmin gadgets for a while now. Starting with my cycling computer 820 to the 830. Then I bought the forerunner 245 for a decent price and fell in love with the features. Subsequently I purchased the forerunner 945 which I currently have. I cannot speak for the Apple Watch since I've never had one but I do have apple products. However, when it comes to fitness related stuff I definitely choose Garmin. They are durable, specially for military stuff and day to day usage. Battery life is always amazing, not only it charges in less than 30 mins but it lasts for multiple days.
@den7k356

And it's the right choice. Apple has good apps and they work fast, but everything is scattered in different places. The watch is not independent, it can't do a lot of things without a phone. In the rain or with gloves on, it's impossible to use them at all. I have epix pro 2 now and I wanted to upgrade to apple watch ultra since I have an iPhone and macbook, it was a big mistake :) and battery is not the biggest problem.

Good comparison. I’m sure Apple looked at Garmin for inspiration for the Ultra. I am sure they looked at the market in general. It sounds like for a first try, Apple did a decent job. As with everything, it’ll improve over time. I have a little doubt the Ultra will outsell the entire sports watch market because of Apple’s cachet as well as the features it brings from the standard version of it.

Very interesting and informative video, you've done an incredibly deep job. IMHO, it's strange to choose between Apple Watch and Garmin, because Garmin has a lot of experience in producing professional equipment for sports, outdoor activities and navigation, so they understand all the technologies and needs of sportsmen. Apple Watch, even Ultra, for me is more about everyday usage as smart watch + a little more sport functions.

I have had Series 2 and Series 5 Apple Watch. I liked the style and the functions. I did not keep them because they just suck for endurance training. The Ultra fixes some of those issues, BUT I don’t like the look of it. I would rather just keep my Garmin that is the best work out watch. Not to mention, when I did have my Apple Watches I would start getting distracted on my watch apps as if I were on a phone. The limited smart watch capabilities of the Garmin is a BENEFIT.
@freepat101
@freepat101 Год назад
I see your point, but I actually experienced the opposite effect. With my AW I'm less likely overall to look at my phone and it keeps me from having that distraction of checking my calendar and then three hours later, what just happened TikTok/Instagram void. I do not like the herd of sheep feeling I get of having an AW vs. Garmin or the other sports focused watches, but I can't overlook the utility of it for that reason alone. At least the Ultra looks unique (for now) and doesn't need to be charged every single day.

Love your videos - you and the Rainmaker are great dudes and you review technology that I like to use. Appreciate the work you do. I ended up going with the Epix2. It does absolutely everything I want a watch to do, and I charge once every 1-2 weeks. Also, really like the Garmin Body Battery feature and daily training recommendations. I converted over to this watch from an Apple Watch Gen 4 which after 4 years of use could barely get through a single day. The quality of the Garmin hardware is just top notch. Apple makes a great product though, and for someone who really wants a cellular connection that is clearly the way to go.

Very useful feature comparison. As this is Apple's first "ultra" iteraction of the watch product, I would expect them to continue increasing feature sets (ie: vs Garmin and others). As for features, I wonder that Apple must consider its third-party app ecosystem when including base features in WatchOS, striking a balanace somewhere.
@incredibilistic
@incredibilistic Год назад
I was coming here to say the same thing. It's very likely that the reason a lot of the features that are native to other sports watches is that Apple might have to toe the line between making a very capable watch that can do a ton of things while not excluding their software partners. Apple doesn't want to be accused of taking money out of app developers' pockets. And yes, I also agree that if this is Apple's first foray on this type of device that in a few years it will be even more capable and more of a threat to Garmin and others. It's only a matter of time before they dominate the extreme sports market smartwatch market as their first entry is usually a way to test the waters to ensure there's a market for a product and then proceed to introduce more features to ice the competition.

I didn't hear you mention, but one big difference is lack of aggregated data. Apple Health and Fitness apps are separately required to search for certain things. And there is no available web platform for analyzing or comparing. Huge plus for Garmin. Also, Apple doesn't "do" anything with all the metrics it gathers. Body battery, training readiness, performance condition, sleep score, etc. are examples of Garmin setting a baseline and they letting you know how you are doing. Edit: to Des’ credit, he has mentioned it before.

Yes. Not enough people are talking about this. It doesn’t matter what the watch can do; Apple Health still has an enormous gap to make up over Garmin Connect. Heck, I have custom workouts in Garmin Connect that I created in 2010 and I’m still using them on my Epix today. And as long as Apple Health can only be accessed on an iPhone, that’s an instant non-starter. I create custom navigation courses and workouts in GC in the browser on my MacBook Pro and send them to whatever Garmin device it’s destined for. Not to mention the detailed post-activity data analysis. There’s no way I’m going to be hunching over an iPhone for all of this. Apple still has an awful lot of ground to make up.

Let me just say, "I've been a loyal Apple fanboy since the very first iPod, iPhone, and watch, including all their computers." However, I have worn a Garmin Epix Gen 2 every day since getting it three months ago and don't plan on taking it off for anything else right now. I do wildlife photography walking trails every weekend, and the battery life is a no-brainer for me.

@@mehshutup3041 Btw: Not everyone is an extremely fragile athlete like you that wants every other opinion invalidated, some just want distance from their phone which the garmin is really bad at it, since it is just an extension, not a replacement. The Apple Watch manages this distance and you can even have internet with it far away from your phone. Charging it every other day isn't a problem if you don't go on hiking tours that last weeks. @@SpaceGhostt right i guess i can only speak for my instinct solar. I can turn it off and charge up more % if im out camping in one spot for a few days. There is a massive difference too if charging in regular smart watch mode and battery saver mode. I have not charged my watch for ages because i just turn it off and leave it by a window when i dont actually need, so for me it has replaced the charger.

LTE on a Garmin Epix gen 3 so the user could make and receive phone calls would be the next logical step to stay competitive. But what would be the fate of the famous Garmin battery life at that point?

The best thing about the Apple Watch is the cellular connectivity- this means you leave your phone at home and still be contactable. This is best thing for me - it means I can go out for a run without a heavy phone in my pocket. Not to be underestimated.

For me the major benefit of AW Ultra is stand alone cellular connectivity - so that I can take it for a run or bike ride without iPhone in the pocket. Now I have AW4 SS with cellular but the weak LTE signal in rural areas drains battery pretty fast. Still I like it that I can go for a walk with my dog in the forest and still be connected in case of emergency. I could not do it with Garmin. I would really like a review of AW Ultra in such scenario: take it on a bike ride without iPhone and see how long the battery lasts, or how fast it drains. This would be the ultimate test. I imagine the long distance runners would appreciate running with just a watch and still be connected instead of having to keep with them the iPhone.
@Burps___
@Burps___ Год назад
I agree with you, Robert. It amazes me that there are no YT videos that I could find actually testing the LTE AW vs iPhone (eg rural, in car, etc) for battery, connectivity, communication quality. It would be a popular video.

@HenleyBailey Год назад
Yeah, it would be nice to have that in a Garmin. I do some long distance running and take my phone but it also doubles up as a camera so I don't mind so much but if it wasn't for the camera side of things then it would just be an extra lump I have to run around with. For my normal training runs I take my phone, mainly as safety and it would be nice to leave it behind, hopefully Garmin will add this in the next gen.
