In this video a Appleton Rum Review of Appleton 8 year old Rum. This is an Appleton Jamaica Rum, that has been aged for 8 years. How does it compare to the 12yo as well. The Appleton Estate Jamaica is one of the best rums in the Caribbean. So I can't wait to hear your opinions.

Great rum, has become the most used bottle in my little bar lately. Cant go wrong with this in fruity cocktails, close my eyes and I’m on holiday!

Agree. Stunning Rums. But I just call the 8yo probably the best value for money rum on the market. It’s that good for the price.

Agree with the Doc above. However, there is room for both. I stand by the 8yo. Its epic Rum for the Price in the UK.

I did a tasting of this recently and noted down that on the nose I got caramel, sweet, funky, fruity and vegetal and then on the palate i got peppery, vegetal and sweet with a funky finish. I am quite early in my journey so my palate is not as developed and I struggle to pick out more tasting notes but it's cool to see some cross over between what you tasted and smelt and what people on RumX did (In Aus so no RumX here :( ). Either way, keep the content up, big fan over here!!

Kind of amazing that you never mentioned orange peel. It's so dominant and they even mention it on the back of the label as the first tasting note. Funny how out palates are tuned differently.

This is one of the best rums I have ever tasted! I have had some more expensive rums but they are to sweet for my pallet. I always purchase this well rounded 8 year old Appleton Estate in Australia. $75 Australian dollars a bottle, at uncle Dan Murphy's bottle shop. Cheers

Hey stevie,..great show,..like i espected,..thumbs up,..i got at home the appleton estate rare cask,12 years,same bottle as u got in ya background,...awesome flavour,..deep,smooth,rich,..btw.can it be,that spirits are cheaper in germany??,.i spend round about 30 Euro for the 12 years appleton..and steve,.do u have a favorite rum?? Which one???did u try DON PAPA?? -- and one QUESTION more,..ur "bar",.where is it? At Home?? I mean ur board,.the big rum- shelf,..in ur living room??? Or basement ( cellar)?? Regards

Haha, hey Doc! Right, Bar is my FIlm Studio in my converted Garage at Home! It is fully functional though. Like Water, Washing up, Firdge/Freezer etc. As for the other bits... Appleton 12 here in UK is about £36-£38 i think. And do I have a favvy Rum. Thast sooooo hard! I don't think I do. I have soooo many and for different things.... like Daiquiri; Ron Cubay Carta Blanca. Fruity Daiquiri; (its a UK Brand) Belgrove Spiced Fig and Blackberry (DDL Rum). Coke; (another UK Rum) Rosemullion Dark... but also Worthy Park 109 is ace! Sipping; Appleton 12, Flor De Cana 12, Plantation XO, Plantation Stiggins... i could go on for ages!

Curious- and I know this is a personal decision: when sampling rum with other beverages ( ex. Ginger ale), what ratio of rum to added beverages do you generally employ? Thanks

Ha, now i'm a bit unusual i think when it comes to Rum Highballs! I do actually do 1-4! But even my Mum abuses me and literally does half & half (1-1). Its up to you. My take though, if i want a strong drink, I'll drink it neat. If i want a mixed drink, i want it longer and weaker!

Hmmmm... Not sure how i can do that anymore than i already do. I mean I talk you through it every week on the Live. There's not much to it. Just log in. Search for a Rum and click Taste it! Easy to pick up in seconds. BUt if you have specific Questions I might dedicate this Live Show on the 5th to RumX as i have no theme!

Dropped half a bottle of an evening making a rum fashioned, wowed me from the first sip, morish, delightful, relaxing, for me does everything a straight forward rum should

I just grabbed a bottle for £22.40 from Sainsburys - looks like they're clearing out from the label, perhaps new branding etc. Not sure if this price in all stores, but worth keeping an eye out for. Seemed like a bargain to me.

Very different Rums. What people have to understand Rum is so diverse. Much more than Whisk(e)y. So comparing a Spanish Style Column Still Rum to an English style Pot Still Rum is almost like comparing a Banana and a Pineapple. Both Fruit/Rum…but VERY different styles.

A little late, but there's actually several ways in which sweetness can be introduced into a spirit without adding sugar. For one, barrel aging can actually add some sugars, because wood toasting and charring both can break down the long sugar chains that make up wood. On top of that, sugar isn't the only thing that can make something sweet. Ketones, aldehydes, and hydroxyls (chemical groups you will find a lot in both sugars and artificial sweeteners) can also impart sweet tastes, and they can come from fermentation, distillation (particularly in copper stills), oxidation, or from the barrel. Vanilin, the chemical that gives a vanilla aroma and flavor actually has a little bit of sweetness on it's own (it's got both an aldehyde and a hydroxyl group). To make things even more in favor of the sweet side, sometimes having aromas associated with sweetness such as molasses and fruit can trick your brain into perceiving the sweetness as even higher.

This or el dorado 8 year? And another question please. I’m more used to white rums but do 8-12year old rums basically turn into whiskey? I’d think they would take on too much oak flavour. Thanks

No. They don’t turn into whiskey cos the base raw material is wildly different. Rum obvs is Sugar Cane/Molasses, Whisky is Grain. But depending how the Rum is Blended and distilled, it can take on a lot of Wood from the barrel. Some do, some don’t. I’ve tasted a very oak heavy 5yo and a very light and tropical 15yo. There’s no exact science too it. You can sort of just get to learn once you find a brand you like. For example, an El Dorado 15yo for me is way more wood heavy than the Appleton 21yo! But there’s also more wood notes (not much) in an Appleton 8yo vs the El Dorado 12!

I don't like Coca-Cola, I tend to put my rum into Root Beer. I find it cuts the syrupy sweetness of the Root Beer to make it a bit more palatable. Slice of lime helps too.

With out meaning to be sarcastic... it's a how long is a piece of string question that! Some prefer 12-15yo... some prefer 3yo.... some prefer unaged and others prefer 8yo. There is no right or wrong!
