They left out one of the silliest details of the crime. The thief didn't escape in a car but rather by floating down the river in an inner tube.

In my experience when job hunting a few years ago, most adverts are actually from non-existent jobs.

Get a room full of applicants, either ship them out to be stranded in a neighborhood for door-to-toor sales or a day of "testing for fit" and then repeat the next day.

Unfortunately it's still like that, but the excuse is that it's easier than reposting the same ad for high attrition jobs, or even worse, to gauge interest in a position to use as leverage against current employees, or not as bad, just plain laziness.

I guessed it was 'to give someone a crowd to vanish in after a crime' immediately. I recall in the 90s seeing a Law & Order episode where the criminal evaded the police after picking up a ransom by having put out notices for a flash mob with the same outfit he was wearing.
@kentslocum

This reminds me of the Sherlock Holmes story about the Red-Headed League, where an advertisement was placed in the newspaper, inviting redheads to apply for a job. The goal, of course, was to hire a specific redhead so that a crime could be committed while he was thus occupied.

@@k.vn.kCommon internet lingo made me misread this. "SH" is used as a stand in for "self-harm" since saying "self-harm" can get you muted/deleted/etc on most websites nowadays. So I read that as your "self-harm collection" and that hit me with a bit of whiplash XD Oof

I actually know one for once! I heard about this on a crime channel I think, and it just stuck with me because it was weirdly kind of wholesome? Like, it was just kind of a funny crime where no one actually got hurt (except for some pepper spray to the face, which isn't nice but not life threatening). He actually escaped down the river on an inflated tube. The dude later realised he made a huge mistake and tried to turn his life around and is now trying to help others steer away from that path.

So many people look down on the homeless and cast aspersions on them. But they are just people like any other. Far from being criminals, many have a well developed sense of morality and justice. I find it inspiring that someone who the thief probably dismissed as worthless was the key to catching him. I can only hope that this hero received some reward and has gone on to a life of less hardship.

I guessed this answer, potentially subconsciously influenced by the top comment peeking out which revealed it was for a crime, but I would assume Craigslist could've quite easily tracked down this person? Like all it would take it for a policeman to ask one of the many dressed up people why they're there, then they can find the ad and trace it back to the criminal (even if they didnt get the licence plate)

Initial thoughts: crime evasion, by having some people show up at the crime scene wearing the same outfit as the criminal would allow him to slip by undetected AND occupy the first responders. The hired guys would have no clue to give to the cops, and wouldn't flee, allowing for easy disruption of early police work.
