Using basic physics for martial arts...this is what distincts you from other martial artists. Keep making these videos.

+Satrio Prahasto it would amaze you the amount of applied physics and medical knowlege that are in all traditional asian martial arts, the thing is that dk yoo is western friendly enough to explain them, most of the time the asian way of teaching is through imitation and repetition, not explanation.
@iNinjaWalker

+kiltrofilms one thing I like about DK Yoo is his openness to other martial arts. He's done fifteen martial arts, both Western and Eastern, and he incorporates crucial elements from all of them into his way of fighting.
@kiltrofilms
@kiltrofilms 9 лет назад
yeah he is well rounded (or at least thats how he looks on his vids), western martial arts rely mostly on muscle and weight projection, as for eastern martial arts they use more energy projection through applied physics and damage through presition hits, and so on.

also, you have to know that mostly when the asian teacher taught their student, they won't passed down all the techniques like 100%. This thing has happened since ages

Thanks a lot for the subs! It will be great if you can explain more and better about transfering the energy and the impulse. You explain it in a very easy to understand way.
@Zcorps

absolutely. the faster you "disconnect" from the POCKET ( point of contact kinetic energy transfer) the more KE remains at the POC

I'm so much impressed. All your tips work great. Since following your tips, I doubled or even tripled my speed and power in my kicks and punches. Please produce some DVDs or MP4 Download videos. You belong to the same category as Bruce Lee. A real Master and Inovator of Martial Arts.

Impulse = Force x change in time = mass (final velocity - initial velocity) = change in momentum....the less contact time, the same mass delivers more damage

If leg releases at top of a wave it escapes easy. If wait till bottom of wave, verg hard to escape....same for surfing, skiing, bikes...u name it, jumps(release/retract) occurr better from top of ramp/wave

so it's pretty much going back to the age old question of push punch vs snap punch in boxing. in this case the snap punch being impulsive force.

This reminds me of some the principles taught in Taekwon-Do, as written by Choi Hong-Hi in his "manual"/"encyclopedia". Cool.

You guys remember those old BruceLee demo vids where he demonstrated those very rapid, snappy kicks? Here's probably the reason why.

It's like... relaxing and after hiting, using the muscles that retract the leg/hit meanwhile the attack is still powerful, so you come back faster.

Can someone please explain this principle to me, in a bit of detail? I understand why this is effective, but i also see that it accompanies some physics principles, and would love to know exactly why this generates such an impact. Thanks =]

I don't much care for this explanation personally. A lot of people will feel encouraged to pull their hit back after contact purely for power which will end up reducing power. Aim to transfer weight quickly, and make sure the power is transferred quickly, not so much that contact is lost quickly. Contact maintained usually means power transferred slowly and reduces damage, but simply pulling the limb back does not achieve this. It has to do with how you generated and released power altogether. How it's explained implies pull the limb back, but keep in mind in his demonstration he doesn't pull back, the pad moves away more quickly. I don't think most people have TOO much of a problem generating power, but a lot don't know how to release it, making a slow release. Maybe that's what he's getting at, but the explanation is a little iffy to me. Just my personal opinion.

Hmmmmmm, when you have to pull your kick backwards after the legs hit the mitts, then wouldn't it lower your force delivered ?

I don't think so. T is just the time it takes for the momentum to change, or the time the force acts regardless of how hard the surface is. But then again, I'm not a physicist, but a computer engineer. Not my area D:

+Carlo Dizon He is teaching a Korean student. He's not specifically teaching RU-vid, think of RU-vid as more of a library than anything else. It would hinder the understanding of the Korean student if he taught him in english :)

+Carlo Dizon i think he can speak a bit of English, but he would mostly show. 80% (Not exact number) of human communication is through body language, so i am pretty sure that the two of you will get together very well. like he would gesture you to pick up the mitt or punch or whatever. in a way it is pretty cool because he can overcome language barriers to a large extent.

His students focus too much on the target and making big impact. If they concentrate on target maybe 3-4 inches less, then contact will be shorter and retraction easier. Committing too much to the impact is causing the leg not to be ablle to retract soon enough. Shockwave of impact can repel leg(bounce) or absorb(sticky) depending on shape and deepness of impact
