Applying MINIMALISM to Food, Cooking and Eating - Intentional Sustainable Kitchen

In today's video, I want to share how I apply minimalism to food, cooking, and eating. My approach is to make it simple and enjoyable for my family while trying to create a sustainable lifestyle. Since we enjoy cooking and eating a lot, we don't see a solution in restricting and oversimplifying the topic of food in our household while still decluttering everything we don't use and focusing on what brings value and joy to this area of life.

Love this! I have worked so hard on healing my relationship with food and have found intuitive eating. It has helped me get to a "relaxed" place with food and to just enjoy it. Which sounds like what you and your family do. I also love to cook and the best thing I've done to minimize my food waste is to make a meal plan!! Of course you never have to stick with it but my problem was going to store and seeing all these wonderful things and wanting to cook every fantastic meal under the sun and I would end up eith a fridge so full that I would forget what I even had. So now I plan out what we want to have. We can have anything but it has to be on the plan if I'm buying food to make it. Also eat before shopping! I thought this was a funny diet culture trick but it actually helps because you are not interested in food when you aren't hungry so buying yummy ingredients is easier to keep track of, rather than grabbing every kind of produce you can find because you didn't have a snack first.

That sounds great! Oh yes, when you go shopping hungry you end up with a bunch of things that are not healthy or just unnecessary... I don't intentionally eat before shopping but I regret being hungry in the grocery store every time it happens 😂 for me sometimes it is the opposite and I have no idea what I want to cook because nothing really sounds good... But mostly I also just sit down, plan out six or seven meals and buy everything I need for those... And then sometimes I cook something different out of the ingredients but it really helps to avoid waste and sticking to a budget and just not buying random stuff and ending up with a fridge full of food and no idea what to cook ☺

Hola Lia! I agree with you about the way of eating is chosen by the individual. We became vegan approximately 5 years ago and the funny thing is that we made the change because I got sick so badly and it was because I got two bacterias at the time. One from meat and the other one from dairy. So when I recover I couldn't go back to the same diet. Then, fortunately, after a couple of months I found out about all of the things involved in dairy farm and my husband and daughter also change diet. So now we are vegan, minimalist and almost 100 % zero waste. You know the normal crazy people 🤣. Just kidding. I'm glad to find more and more aware people and I hope to find more every day. The planet will thank us. Te cuidas chica. Adiós.🤗

That sounds amazing! Not the reason but the outcome! I hope to eat even more plant-based meals in the future, unfortunately, my son really doesn't want to only eat vegan... But we will see... The vegan options become more and better all the time so I am sure more and more people will eat more plant-based and fewer animal products! ☺

@@ecofriendlia don't worry, little by little your son will like the vegan options more. It has not been easy you know, especially at our age. We are 48 years old and we became vegan 5 years ago. Perhaps for our daughter was easier because she was 5 years old. But don't worry if you look for recipes in RU-vid you will find many delicious options. 😜

I love your videos, too! You’re vibe is so laid back & not snobby :) My stuff is all in storage & I’ve been binge watching minimalism so that when I finally find a decent place it’ll be easier to get rid of more stuff since it’s already in trash bags or boxes! Would you consider doing a minimalist apartment tour or meal prep-type video from your kitchen? I love minimalist home tours for inspiration. Thank u 💖

Lovely content as always! I am always torn between wanting to have a minimalist kitchen and owning appliances to make food that I'd rather not buy packaged (waffle maker, ice cream attachment for my mixer, large pot just for making jam). Not to mention all the specialized equipment I use for my job as a baker. If there is a way to be DIY and minimalist I certainly haven't found it. 🤷

Hey Lia! I liked this video. As for me, for generations we all have cooked meals at home. We eat only home-cooked meals and during weekend we might go out to eat to break the monotony. I enjoy cooking as well so it doesn't seem like a chore to me :)

So I’m in this weird stage I felt really unhealthy and now I’m in week three of adding majority vegetables into my diet and my body is still getting use to it. I’ve lived a minimalist lifestyle since 2017, and it’s not for everyone but has brought me tremendous peace. I’m in a new stage of my life and exploring health benefits and I love veggies, and fruits. I don’t eat chicken, beef and red meats mostly turkey and fish just by preference. But now it’s limited to really 1 time a week. I will still buy meat as I have a son who eats some meats. ( turkey mostly). I enjoy the idea of easier cooking. I also cut most gluten and dairy. I’m finishing up some items to not be wasteful. Thank you for your perspectives. Maybe I’ll learn something that can add to be helpful.

I love watching your videos. I would like to become more like that. Just have what we need, but the best I am able to do is try to not have left overs. Or I give my leftover away the same day. I have been slowly being more intentional about what I own. I hope one day you can do a video showing what your kitchen looks like

I enjoyed this video and now it just makes me want to see your kitchen. Not sure if you'd be able/ comfortable doing a kitchen tour or not. I just wanted to point out one thing you said that I'm not sure why you said it...at about 5:18 you are talking about your pasta maker and other tools you use and you say something like "I guess I'm not too minimal in that way. That comment implies that minimalism is about the numbers or how much stuff you have. I've watched enough of your videos to know that you technically know that minimalism isn't about how much of anything you have but it is about the mi set, the intention and conscious awareness of what we buy and use and keep and consume. So I don't know if this was just a human slip or maybe from anticipation of what others will say in the comments on RU-vid, but you clearly really do enjoy cooking, your face literally changed and lit up. That was cool to see. You could have an entire kitchen full of appliances and still be a minimalist as far as I am concerned and by my definition of minimalism. If you are using the items and they bring you so much joy when you use them and they make the activity of preparing food more enjoyable or easier in some way, and brings value to you then as long as a person is intentional and mindful about the items then the number or amount does not matter. It's sad to think that possibly past negative RU-vid comments could be the culprit for how or why you said what you did. I hope you hear this as encouragement and not criticism. I really enjoy your videos and find you very inspiring. Keep up the great work.

I’m sure you will get some negative feedback for not being vegan... I’m not here for that. I am vegan, I live a vegan lifestyle. I highly recommend looking into the ethics and sustainability of animal consumption. That being said, any steps you can and are making towards reducing animal consumption is a step in the right direction. Making steps for the better should not go unnoticed nor should one be demonized for not completely being vegan. Let’s celebrate the wins and work towards being better. I hope that you can one day make that connection with animals and stop consumption of them completely... but until then, every choice you can make for the reduction of animal consumption is great. I encourage you and everyone to reduce and make the connection

Thank you, you are so right! Ideally, I would be vegan and I also thought it would be a way change but somehow it has hern hard. But I decided to not just give up and go back to a highly meat-based diet... I know it's not great and I can do better but a lot of people actually get discouraged by vegans shaming them for only being vegetarian and therefore will never make the change to only animal products. So thank you for being encouraging ☺

We were completely vegan for 2 years but now I eat butter (grass fed and organic) and eggs (we own our own chickens). Occasionally we eat fish. We found being less strict about eating was less stressful and works better for us.
@ecofriendlia
@ecofriendlia 3 года назад
I can totally understand that. Sometimes I think it would be easier to just be strict and eat only vegan it make a rule like "animal products only two times a week" but on the other hand I really like to just not stress too much about it. I would like to eat fewer animal products but stressing about food doesn't help because then I don't feel like cooking and eating and being vegan gets even harder...

I'm so glad you said you're not vegan! Neither am I and I still consider myself a minimalist and low-waste person. Veganism is not for everyone, I would even say that majority of people won't do well on this diet. I tried it, did a lot of research to make sure all my nutritional needs are met, then it gave me health issues and I did a really extensive research again only to find out that it's all up to your genes and no amount of tryharding will make up for bad convertion rates and other issues. Much love!

It is difficult to be vegan. People need to understand that not everyone can be due to their health needs. Again may I say that you can use lip gloss and some economical products for your skin. I am sixty years old. I just use aloe Vera basic cream and an economical face cream. What you will look like at my age has nothing to do with how you used a lot of expensive and unnecessary products. It has to do with having a minimalist mindset. For lines at the sides of the eyes sunglasses also help. I am writing you this because I genuinely care. God Bless you.
@ecofriendlia
@ecofriendlia 3 года назад
Thank you for your kind comment! I am actually not really sure how or even if I want to protect my skin from getting wrinkles... Healthwise, yes of course, and Aloe vera seems to be a good product for this but I think I'd rather have wrinkles next to my eyes than wearing sunglasses ☺ but maybe I will change my mind and I definitely don't lime the forehead wrinkles I am getting ☺

@@ecofriendlia Believe me we all get them, but you need to age gracefully. The texture and the thickness of the skin show, so I often ask myself why people want a facelift so badly? I just want to take care of myself and not neglect my health. The person inside is more important but they have to live in their spacesuits.
