PC builder here. The best way to remove a heatsink from a pressure sensitive part such as the CPU or GPU is to move in a cross pattern, starting with one screw and moving directly across (not around) to the other side, and doing it again. Your method of loosening before completely taking off was fine too though. In terms of thermal paste itself... YES, there is a correct amount too! It's supposed to be the size of a grain of rice, and I think you did a good job.

Well worth the effort. When I opened the back of mine found batteries were bulging and needed replacing. Really simple process and MBP will appreciate your effort in cooler operating temps.

Fantastic tutorial. Very simple to follow and understand. I changed thermal paste on my Macbook pro 15 2014 and its a night and day difference. I used Arctic MX 6 if anyone is wondering.

I tried liquid metal instead of thermal paste. 2 days of testing and the fans start much less. Thanks for the video.

Might as well use an air duster can to clean the fans and heat sinks since if they get clogged then the heatpipes have no where to dissipate heat to the open air

My thermal paste has never been replaced and still stays cool around 40C the hottest it hit was 48 but that's under load

ahh man, I use Celsius for temperature measurement.

Celsius is the standard for temperature management in the computer electronics industry. This is why you should always use Celsius to monitor your temp sensors, unless you're really good/fast at C/F conversion.

Man I had no idea the thermal paste on these macbooks was so lousy.

Great video. wondering if you have considered using thermal pads on top of the heat sinks to dissipate heat throughout the bottom chassis?

I would have thought of that if I still used this device, but no I haven't.

You mentioned the first screw bit required to remove the back of the laptop, but not the screw bit for the removal of the heat sync, what screws are these?

@@someboringperson9359 Also I experienced some dropping FPS while scrolling or browsing on this Mac. I don't know if it is usual or not. I have a 10 day test time and If I find any problem in that, I can return it.

@@Alex.HilmanThank you man! Well on paper there is difference but in reality not at all, in fact mine almost never hits 4ghz because of poor cooling which this retina model has. Now when It comes to FPS drops and freezes I never experienced those and youre probably experiencing those because of poor battery or high temps. I highly recommend you to change the thermal paste. Once again mine didnt have those problems however it was heating a lot and it was loud but after chaning paste everything is normal.
