After 8 months of ownership and about 4,800 miles, including about 165 on track, I think I'm qualified to pass judgment, share my opinions, and give a long-form review of my 2017 Tuono V4 RR. Watch the video to find out what I think, and to get a little insight into whether or not you may or may not want to buy one!

I'm 6' so for those my height or less I'd like to offer that the tank design is perfect for hanging off of. It is wider at top with an almost ledge at top so you can grip the tank extremely well and that "ledge" helps keep you in place. Excellent design but probably not ideal for people much over 6'. When you sit on a Tuono or RSV4 this tank design will become immediately apparent and either feel like "wow" this is great or your knees will lay across the top of the ledge like this reviewer/owner. I really like the way the high foot pegs and "ledge" at top of tank provide a triangle that you can lock into. Feels very secure.

@@TheKniperlight I'm 6'3" and it works alright for me, but I think it varies based on personal preference. I'd highly recommend going to your local dealer or finding one for sale elsewhere and taking a seat on one, or, better yet, getting out on a test ride! That will be the best way to know for sure! 🙂

My last bike was a Daytona 675 and now I have an Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR and love it. Your review is spot on and I wouldn't change a word it is an incredible bike. I'm 67 years old and find it comfortable for 300+mile days in the smoky mountains and all day at the track. After 7000 miles in 5 months you get very comfortable with the power and switching bikes with a friend, his R6 seemed like a ninja 300. I have tank gripper on my bike and it gives you plenty of tank grip.

Hey Mark, glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate your validation of my assessment! 🙂 It is an incredible bike and I couldn't picture myself on anything else for the riding I do use it for. And I feel the same way every time I get back on my Daytona 675R at the track, but I like that because it makes it seem much easier to manage in comparison! How many track days have you done on your Tuono?

@@hiimchad I've done 5 in Michigan Grattan Raceway and GingerMan Raceway. I love the bike and just always want to get on it even if its only a short ride. I've always rode big bores in 1973 I rode motocross on a Yamaha SC 500 and loved Honda CR 500's for trail riding. The Tail of the Dragon (morning and evening) and surrounding area is a great place to become one with the bike. I'm doing my 3rd trip down there on the Aprilia (over 50 multi day trips over the years) in a couple of weeks.

@@salvadorvega9834 I've got 15,000 miles on it and it's great. One issue I changed my air filter at 11,000 miles and it had been sucking in dirt around the filter still runs fine though. A K&N filter stops that because it's more ridged.

I have an ‘18 same color. Yes, it’s that good in my opinion! I’ve owned an ‘09 FZ6, Buell 1125R, Buell Firebolt 1200, and an Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200. This Tuono is the most comfortable, fastest, and oddly the easiest to live with all around. Wanna chill? It’s good with it, track day? Sure, no problem, it’ll tear your face off. Wanna ride it for a few hours? No problem, it does that too! Ride one if you haven’t, if your like me, it’ll get under your skin and you won’t be able to leave the dealer without her!

@@captainamerica9353 The 1125R was my first legit ‘sport’ bike. I loved the belt drive and it’s power band. Torque all over. I sold it just before the warranty was up since I had to replace the computer module before it was even broken in. I later bought a cheaper more old school Firebolt 1200 which for many reasons, I liked more than the faster 1125R. I loved the styling, red rims, twin sound, slightly higher bars and it’s much more analog feel and approach. My only real complaint about the Firebolt was the amount of heat it would transfer to your legs. This thing got effing hot in traffic! I’ve considered getting back into Buell now that they’re officially back and even being build in my home town, thing is I just don’t trust them. I still have a sour taste in my mouth from owning two bikes no one would work on, not even to change the fluid, batteries etc. Even the local Harley dealer said they weren’t able to get parts for them anymore.

Ohhhhh my the sound of those downshifts. You are too modest, the Tuono has released your inner Biaggi. I cannot believe how cool motorcycles are now. I want one of every super naked. Glad to hear the Tuono is easy to ride fast.

I did not have my 1100rr when I lived in Mission Viejo. The views on your ride of Santiago Canyon made me wish I did. I also have a Street Triple RS. Different bikes but similar. Your observations about the Tuono are spot on. I’m a road guy not a track guy. It’s stellar as a street bike. Sporty geometry but comfortable great brakes and that engine. Just saw this video. We live in the best of times for motorcycles.

Thanks for the great video, I just bought 2019 factory model. So many gizmos the manual doesn’t really explain and you explained everything. Sucks I’m in the break in process so I can’t do nothing too crazy.

I just got one have not had a bike in about 10 years but the price was just to good I got a 2016 4 3000 with 50 miles on it and I had to get it looking forward to getting on it Love your video 😊

I'm crying everyday (not litterally) everyday and I watch videos longing for the moment i will ride my own... 1 month left.... ho BTW, i used to have a licence for a few years; so i'm not a "new" rider on his very first bike.

@@hiimchad Northern IL...Where the roads are so rough you have to stand on your pegs so you don't get bucked off your seat going over heat buckles and potholes...or your vision is blurry and hands are numbs from the constant vibration and jarring. It's quite the cathartic experience. Im usually wiped out after an hour. I dream of the rides I could go on if only the roads were smooth :(

Just went from a 2013 Honda CBR 500R to a 2017 Aprilia Tuono v4 Factory and holy shit the difference is absolutely insane. It's an absolute animal.

Well, the engine is more than twice the size of the 500R, and much better tuned to boot 😂 I felt the same way coming off my Daytona 675R, can't imagine the delta coming from a 500R. How long did you have the Honda?

Ever plan on doing more power mods? Ive done a easy cheap one that was $80 but made a true difference and moved up to a RSV4 airbox assembly and Open Flash Tablet Stage 3 tune. 176hp to tire or 195ish flywheel

Hi, you're welcome! If it's in your budget, I would recommend a 2017 or newer. The bike received significant updates to the engine, making it more reliable. Additionally, many new features were added in 2017, including cornering ABS, auto blip for downshifts, cruise control, a digital dash and more.

@@hiimchad broadly, yeah, I've had a few issues but I did crash it (rode away but had to fix cooling and electrics) and it is old enough to vote. On the whole I'd say they're solid though at this age the exhaust mounts were rotten and the stator cooked. Biggest long term problem really is the valve clearance checks is a really expensive job so people tend to skip it and well ridden examples are well up in the range where that can cause issues.

Amazing review, very in depth. I’ve had a gxsr 750R for over 10 years. I sold it and bought a Yamaha Royal star venture, I wanted my wife to join me on some rides, but I missed the sportiness, how does this compare to the Susuki gxsr 750R. Is it manageable the extra power. Now I have to see how I sell my current bike.

I had a 2013 gsxr 750 for over 5 years before getting 17 tuono. Love my 750 for the memories but the 2017 + tuono is like a Mercedes vs a base model Toyota. You pay to play but all the electronics are full to look at and up/down quick shifter & cruise control on an exotic sounding bike I don’t know why more people don’t own tuono’s. I ride 300-600 in a day and don’t feel any pain the next day lol. 6’2 220ish for reference- power is plentiful but manageable / no different then any 2001 + liter bike. Great bike !!!

@@Bayonetwork That makes sense now! I looked at a couple 2016s and am glad I waited for a 2017. The 2016 is still an amazing bike, but I absolutely love the features they introduced in 17 and can’t imagine not having them now. Have you thought about upgrading?

Hello "hiimchad". Great review, very detailed explained, you know what your doing alright that's 4 sure. I would like to ask a question. But first i have to say i really-really love how the RR looks. It's so sexy. I've tried to ride it it here in Sweden, but only for a short while. The dealers don't like when "kids" that just got their driving license come and ride for joy. I'm 39 and had my D.L. since 2010. But i look young tho, very young. The nearest dealer is far away and i went with a friend that wanted cycle gear. So i thought since were going that way i could tryout the RR. Slept bad that night so i wasn't that excited, but i went anyway. Got there was not keen to put on all of my gear. (And i have a allot of safety gear when i ride). So i just put on the back protector and a mc jacket on. So i could feel the real feeling because i hadn't slept well and i didn't have my full gear on. So don't remember that much of that day riding it. And I've tried that KTM 1290 S. D. R. once as well. And that was too long ago as well. Now, i know that the RR is made from a superbike, and the Duke R is a street bike from scratch. What do you think about them 2 in comparison? I mean i really like the looks of the RR, not so much of the D. R. 2020 is better looking though. I'm not sure how i feel today, haven't tried the 2020 D. R. yet. MAybe I shall try it out again and the RR again as well. What's your thought on both these bikes? Thanks in advance. Kind regards.

Hi Khan! Happy to help, and this is actually a comparison I can make because I have ridden both bikes! I participated in a KTM demo day last year and rode the 2020 Super Duke R, which was actually what got me thinking about a super naked. It was a great bike to ride, with a riding position that is a bit less aggressive (also more comfortable), and tons of torque and power. The electronics all worked quite well as far as I could tell. That said, I think the 2020 Super Duke R as a street bike is about where the Tuono was in 2017. I didn't get to push the Super Duke too hard, so can't say if traction control or other electronics are better than the Tuono's, which they may be, but for spirited road riding I prefer the Tuono for sure. It sounds better, looks better, is more exciting, and I think works a little better overall in delivering the super naked motorcycle experience. If you're trying to decide between buying these two bikes, I highly recommend taking another ride on a Tuono when you are better rested and have all your gear. 🙂

Hello again hiimchad. Thanks for your fast reply and that you could take the time and response about your thoughts. It makes me glad to hear that you have tried out both bikes. About the "traction control or other electronics are better than the Tuono"? I'm not in to those kind of stuff, because I've never ridden on track, yet. Not sure if it's going to happen here in Sweden. Maybe one day home in Chicago? Until then the most important thing for me is about the riding position and comfort. It's most if not all street riding for me. Because i come from a enduro background, love to ride in nature/free trails and so on. So ergonomics are important for me. I like the "up right" position, if your going to travel far, the back wont get that beat of the long tours. Agree, i also think the 2020 S. D. R. is where the Tuono was in 2017. So for spirited road riding you prefer the Tuono for sure. Hm, this gets me thinking even more now... Indeed, i have to tryout them both once again, with more rest and full gear. My heart says Tuono, but maybe my wallet says KTM? I'm going to make a phone call to the insurance company and see which bike is the cheapest to own. What are your thoughts on service cost on these bikes? Do you have any knowledge or experience of what these bikes might cost to maintain? (Valve checks and major services). Last but not least, yesterday i had a look at Aprilias homepage and saw the new 2021 Tuono, what are your thoughts of the looks of the new one? I like the 2020 looks better, but the 2021 might be a more pleasant bike to ride. I'm growing on the new looks, might have to see it in person. Pictures can often be deceiving. Oh yeah, almost forgot, finally the new Tuono has a fuel gauge. (Well done Aprilia, it only took 1000 years). Thanks again Chad.

@@emperorkhan9941 If your priority is a more comfortable riding position, the Super Duke will be the way to go. You do sit more upright on that bike, and with your legs in a slightly less aggressive position than on the Tuono. That said, the Tuono V4 RR is almost $4K less than the base Super Duke R here in the US, and the Tuono Factory is only a few hundred dollars more than the KTM. So, in terms of cost, I think it's a bit of a wash, and likely will be for insurance as well, since they're both big-displacement, high performance motorcycles. As far as service goes, I'm not sure what the KTM's intervals are, or what cost would be, but I figure it would be the same or a bit less than the Aprilia, since the Aprilia has a V4 in a small frame, making things more complicated and difficult to work on. The valve service for the Tuono is recommended every 12,500 miles, and from what I've read runs around $1K USD. I haven't made it to that point yet, but I will certainly report back when I do. 🙂 Again, I highly recommend you ride both bikes for yourself, back to back if possible, to see which is the best fit for you. Given the fact that I am a street/track focused rider, the Tuono made the most sense for me, and I think we agree it is much more beautiful and sound better as well!

@@hiimchad Yes, i think your right, the Super Duke might be a more upright and more comfy to ride. So i called the insurance company today and the Tuono turned out to cost 7.807 SEK, (~$911). and the Super Duke 15.673 SEK. (~$1,829) "For me, per year". That's a major difference. The KTM is way-way too expensive to own. I think your right about the Tuono's service cost, it might be a bit more expensive due to as you say, it is a more tighter bike to work on. To own the Tuono and pay a bit more on the services might be a smarter move in the end. Didn't quite understand the part "the base Tuono V4 RR is over $3K less than the base Super Duke R"? Do you mean the Tuono RR costs 3 grand less than the KTM? Thanks for sharing the service cost for the Tuono, now i can compare it what it'll cost for the same job here in SE. Indeed, the back to back test ride would be so nice. But the down side of Sweden is that is not that big of a country so the dealers are spread out pretty far from each other. It takes about 2-3h to get to closet dealer if i wish to ride them back to back. There's a KTM dealer 30 min away, but them buy the time i get to the other dealer to tryout the Tuono I'll beck very tired and most likely forgotten hot the KTM felt like? It's a hassle. But i know where the Aprilia dealer is so i think I'll try to find a KTM deal close by them. Have you seen the new 2021 Tuono? What are your thoughts on it? Personally i think the 2020 looks better, but the new one might be nicer to ride?

I edited my last reply to make it more clear. 🙂 That's a bit of a bummer that the dealers are so far apart. If you can't find the KTM nearby Aprilia, maybe get some extra rest the night before and make a day out of it! You could bring a notebook or take notes in your phone on each and compare afterwards, which might help with remembering in between the 2-3 hour drive. That sounds like an adventure to me. 🙂 Sorry for missing your question about the 2021. Hey Tomasz! Glad you enjoyed! Unfortunately, I sold the bike almost a year ago and don’t recall the settings. The previous owner who was almost exactly my weight had the suspension set up shortly after completing break in, and it felt very good to me so I never bothered to change it. It rode quite nice. Not too harsh on the road, but good feedback and grip when leaned over. I’d guess probably somewhere in the middle of the compression and rebound adjustments, and sag probably 30-40mm as is recommended for most sportbikes. Sorry I can’t help here!

The light only flashes when you have cruise on but you haven't set the speed. You can turn the blinking light off by simply disabling cruise control, and you can reenable it whenever you like by using the cruise switch on the left bar when it's configured for cruise rather than AWC. I usually turn it on when I first pull away and tend to use it often, so I just leave it on. It's honestly never bothered me before. This was the first bike I had ever owned with cruise control, so I was just stoked to have it at all. 😁

@@Ryzza5 Nope! The turn signal indicators are towards the top of the dash and independent of each other (the left arrow is on the upper left of the display, the right is on the upper right) so I can tell if I've left one of those on by mistake, even with the cruise control ready. 🙂

Hey Lucas! If the bike has been serviced at the recommended intervals, it's likely fine. There are quite a few Tuonos on the V4 owners Facebook group with over 40k and even 50k miles. Just make sure the valve service was done at 12k miles!

Glad you enjoyed, Hao! Servicing intervals are similar to most other European bikes. The major service (valve clearance check/adjust, spark plugs, etc) is every 12,500 miles according to the owner’s manual. Other Aprilia V4 owners in my area have spent $1,000-1,500 on that service, depending on where you have it completed (indy shop vs. dealer). Oil changes are quite easy, so I’ve done those myself every 2-3k miles, depending on how many track days I do with that oil in the bike (I’ll knock 1,000 miles off the interval for each track day). Rear tires wear pretty quickly, but that’s because I love it when the V4 sings 😁

@@repsolcbr2543 my Tuono burns about that much as well. I check it each time I clean and lube the chain and top off as needed. I have a Triumph Daytona 675R that burns some as well, and my last Daytona 675 did too. It’s been pretty normal in my experience to have bikes and other high performance engines burn a bit of oil, so I never really thought anything of it.

@@zacharnow6147 unless you're comfortable inspecting a bike yourself and have the tools to do so, I would recommend taking it in to a shop for a pre-purchase inspection. They'll check for leaks, check the condition of the battery, brakes, chain, sprockets, and more and give you a report with what they would recommend doing maintenance/repair wise, if anything.

It can range anywhere from $1200-2k based on the shop, and includes the valve clearance check and adjustment. If that service has not been completed, I would try to use that as a negotiating point, and then have it serviced asap.

Hi Dan! I would definitely not recommend this as a starter bike. It has a ton of power, is a bit challenging to maneuver at low speeds, and is geared very short, meaning very rapid acceleration and it’s all too easy to get the front wheel off the ground. It is a lot to handle, and was designed with very experienced riders in mind. Had you ridden a motorcycle before you got your M1?

On the track I typically see speeds around 130mph on the straight aways, and yes, it does feel like you are going to be blown off the bike. I'm also 6'3", so the little windscreen may work better if you're of a normal stature.

The additional mid-range power and more comfortable ergos for the street. I decided I didn't need to be hunched over with a tall windscreen riding on the street, and found it uncomfortable on longer rides. In my opinion, the Tuono V4 is a superior street bike in every way, and is still great on track. I would only buy an RSV4 as a dedicated track/race bike personally.

Nope! I sold this bike a couple years ago after I picked up a Tuono V4 Factory, but it never gave me a lick of trouble. I did only have it for 10 months and put ~5k miles on it, but I've put 7.5k on my Factory over the past two years and she's still running strong. The only issues I have had with my Factory have been weeping o-rings for the cam tower that will eventually pool and run down the sides of the engine from the spark plug breather holes (common issue, started a couple thousand miles before it was due for valves so just kept and eye on it and soaked up whatever oil there was with a cotton swab each time I serviced my chain. All good since the valves were done and the o-rings replaced) and the bolts that secure the shift shaft to it's backing plate behind the clutch came loose, which seems to be a weird one. The dealer fixed it at no additional cost while it was in for the valves. Other than those, it's been fantastic!

Thanks! A fuel gauge would be nice, but I’m used to not having one at this point so it’s not really an issue for me. My first bike was a 2003 Honda CBR600RR that, shockingly, did have one. I sold it after owning it for a bit less than 2 years and bought a 2006 Triumph Daytona 675, which did not have a fuel gauge. The CBR was the only bike in the supersport category at the time that had one, so I just accepted it and made sure to start keeping track of my range with the trip odometer. Still, would be nice to have. We’ll see if a fuel gauge finally makes it onto the new 2021 bike.

I’m pretty happy with what they have done instead ie ‘F’ trip display counting the miles travelled since the low fuel light has come on. Much more reliable than a fuel gauge. I’m surprised that this doesn’t seem to get a mention anywhere.

Wrong. Tires usually have more contact with the pavement while on an angle. Assuming they are loaded. All depends on so many factors. Tire type. Compound. Weather. Riding style etc. Great video though! I am getting one myself!

Hey Okan, glad you enjoyed it! You are correct, and I misspoke in the video. What I was trying to communicate was that you generally have less available traction when leaned over, and my mouth didn't process the thought correctly. 😅 Like you said, there are so many different factors at play in any given riding circumstance, like speed and tire pressure, but if you're cornering hard, the contact patch will generally increase on the loaded tire, compared to when the bike is upright. Also, that's awesome! I'm sure you'll love it. 🙂 Is it safe to say you found my video while you were doing research as you begin shopping?

Hey Mike! This exhaust actually came on the bike when I purchased it. That said, it is certainly an exhaust I would recommend. It’s a bit louder than the Akrapovic exhaust, and a bit throatier as well. It sounds fantastic at any RPM.

It seems good! I had removed the evap canister to open up the area behind the radiator and provide better airflow/cooling, and I never saw it crack 220F. Operating temperature while moving on track was around 190-200F in most cases, and street riding sees 163-188F while cruising, and though it can get close to 210 in traffic. The seat can get hot after a while if the bike does not have airflow, but other than that, I think it works quite well. Hope that helps, Shubham.
