Wait, what? 40% lighter solar panels? That’s quite an accomplishment.
@edvardaspuotkalis4703
@edvardaspuotkalis4703 7 месяцев назад
Excuse me, but to make something different from the previous time Aptera should have had that previous product which presumably was 40% heavier . Which is not the case. So for me it's just a promotional lie.
@palindromeambigram4852
@palindromeambigram4852 7 месяцев назад
@@edvardaspuotkalis4703 Here's the history. Aptera solar 3.0 is supposedly 40% lighter than, presumably, 2.0. 2.0 was supposedly modestly heavier than 1.0. 1.0 was supposedly about 1/2 the weight of "standard" solar panels. Regardless, Aptera solar 3.0 is impressive.

"My next ride is carbon fiber chassis and run by solar." I can't think of anything more futuristic than that.
@ksnax
@ksnax 7 месяцев назад
I've been driving my 2015 i3 on solar since the day I got it. It's important to talk about the real world efficiency of the car in general for that mean very much. So far, nobody has been able to roof mount anything that even remotely approaches the average energy needs for the majority of drivers. I'm not suggesting it's bad. It's just not as much of a game changer as many seem to believe. Aptera is pushing the envelope, but there is a LONG way to go if we are talking about meeting 100% the needs of the average driver. But that opens the other can of worms where excess production capacity ends up wasted - unlike on a grid-tied permanent array.
@n.brucenelson5920
@n.brucenelson5920 7 месяцев назад
@@ksnax Part of the benefit of Aptera is that its very design greatly reduces the energy needs of the average driver so that its performance can meet those needs in much of the country. 100%? no. But 2.5 times less energy for the same performance of a Tesla Model 3, for instance. Once the tech is standardized Aptera will be able to feed back excess power into the grid, and provide battery backup during outages. Rather than "a can of worms" it adds even greater value.
@MistSoalar
@MistSoalar 7 месяцев назад
@@ksnax okay so yours' practically solar on carbon fiber. that's cool, and I think it's okay that your build or aptera don't meet 100% of average driver's need. I believe regular BEV hasn't reached there yet either.

@@ksnax Let them eat cake? Rooftop solar isn't an option for everyone. Many future Aptera owners don't own a house.
@garywozniak7742
@garywozniak7742 7 месяцев назад
@@ksnaxone big issue is that millions of people rent apartments and or rent or own condominiums where they can't install solar or plug-in charge. With the full solar package on the Aptera if the vehicle is parked in the sun it is charging. While, at home, while shopping, at works etc.. on the road the solar is offsetting the drain on the battery as you drive. At home if you are using a grid inter-tie (net metering) setup their are some losses associated with using that power and if you have a surplus the ekectric company's typically pay you a fraction per kWh for it compared to what they charge you per kWh. In some usage cases, Aptera's solar will make it unnecessary for some owners to have plug-in charge for their typically daily driving needs.

@@bluetoad2668 Amazing to think that you can spout such falsehoods. BTW, the first Tesla Roadsters and all those delivered during 2008 had WORSE acceleration performance than the Aptera prototype my wife and I rode in in Nov. 2021. Tesla was across the street from where I worked in Union City in 2008, and I saw the almost disaster unfold from close up. In fact we hired the Tesla motor engineers for our own projects when Tesla ran out of money and had to lay them off. They only survived because they got a last possible hour investment from Daimler. I invested in Aptera partly to show my teenagers how you can support things you believe in & hope for, not just to make a buck. @@DHyre What will you tell them if they fail? I've learned more from failures in my life than successes, and sometimes you risk knowing that you may likely lose, but the reward is worth the price of failure. This investment has huge risks associated with it, there are more ways to lose your money, at this point, than there are ways to make it back. Just sayin' keep clear-eyed and honest about the possibilities.

@@RonsTruth I agree, and that’s what I told them - it’s a risk, but to me a risk worth taking to bring about their vision. As you say, the reward is worth the risk. If they succeed, far more than just me alone gain, with a new paradigm in personal transportation with no environmental impact. But if they fail, I lose more than just money - we all lose something that helps a world bigger than just our own driveway.

75watts over 26 cells on the hood = 2.88W/cell. Pair that with 20 cells dash (57W), 50 cells roof (144W), 89 cargo (256W) overall production is 532W for a wintertime solar gain...not too shabby in context...they might actually be on track to meet their targeted 700W solar before the optimization of the charge controller is reported complete. Off-angle light however will never match the theoretic maximum. Even my 5kW roof system can only produce 70% of it's rated power with perfect conditions in summer. I had my deposit in on the original Aptera, and now the current one. The two things that give me pause on being an early adopter are... I'm hoping by the time I get one the battery chemistry will be markedly better than what will initially ship. Many better chemistries are in development now. Also, I don't really don't want another EV until I can have bidirectional power delivery that can act as an emergency generator for the house. And for that matter participate in distributed grid power. To me they are key aspects of EV transition. Of course neither of these things are really in Aptera's control. I just hope we get there while I can still pass a driving test ;-) In all likelihood I'll cave once my reservation comes up, but it's definitely a factor in not dropping that $10k now. So, who else thinks Aptera is pretty much the ONLY player building EV's the way they should be built. Everybody else sticking with stamped steel and ever heavier curb weights are missing the point entirely. I think taxes and registrations on EV's (also incentives) should reflect the curb weight. Consumers will vote a different way with their wallets if an 6,000 pound car costs thousands a year to keep on the road. The Hummer EV should cost $10k a year to register just based on the damage they will do to infrastructure. We must back the manufacturers into a corner and force them to think light weight. Force them to look at aircraft design, not farm equipment and industrial.

😎I expect some third party will soon offer a home power solution addon if Aptera Motors itself doesn't. Conceptually it would be an easy add, and Aptera's design openness will make it easy to design in. I'm sure competition for Aptera like cars will arrive once Aptera demonstrates how popular they are.

I agree that higher curb weights should be penalized. Unfortunately, the federal EV incentive has this backward as SUVs/trucks have an $80,000 cap to be eligible for the $7500 tax credit while sedans and passenger cars only have a $55,000 cap to be eligible for the federal tax credit. Also, heavier vehicles are not just harmful to infrastructure, it's also harmful to other people. Pedestrian fatalities have almost doubled since 2009 and heavier vehicles play a big part in that increase. For every 1000lbs heavier a vehicle is, the probability of fatality increases by 47% from baseline. For reference, a "lightweight" EV like the Tesla Model 3 weighs around 4000 lbs. Aptera LE is estimated to weigh 2200 lbs. It's really sad that Aptera won't be eligible for any incentives when they deserve it the most.

If timing becomes an issue, you can always choose a "cheap" intermediate solution, like buying a used car, renting/leasing, riding a bike, public transport, etc. - just avoid shelling out lots of money for a brand new EV and save that for the Aptera.

Very exciting. Well done Team Aptera! Questions: Can you share breakdown of steering system including assist? Perhaps using a simulation video? Can you share breakdown of methods used for analyzing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) analysis? Can you share with us if access to vehicle data will be available via On Board Diagnostic (OBD2) connector? Can you share with us a schematic of the vehicle cooling/heating systems? Again, well done and, Charge on!

What was the "before"? When Aptera Solar 1.0 was discussed, it was claimed to be about half the weight of standard roof top solar panels. Then when Aptera Solar 2.0 was discussed it was claimed to be HEAVIER. Now it's Aptera Solar 3.0 and it's 40% lighter.

@@ApteraMotors So the 7 to 9 layers that Aptera was bragging about in the Gamma "polymer" solar panels turned out to be a bad thing? Who'd thunk it. By the way, the glass being heavier was only speculation on the part of those ignorant of high performance solar panels.
