Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm thanks for that video lots of great information. I did a shout out video maybe you have already seen it on my channel. The Romain was growing good but as the third set of leaves are coming in they are really wrinkly. And then the bigger leaves are starting to curl the edges a slight bit of yellowing. I have not added anything to the tank people talk about crushed coral or vitamins. Or do I need to add more goldfish? Thanks locked down in USA

@@organiccleanfoodconnection I haven't seen the clip sorry. Been flat out trying to keep up with everyone's questions at the moment due to lock downs around the world. 😉 I think you'll need to add more fish in there to get a decent amount of nutrients. The big commercial guys work on approximately 30-60g or 2-4oz of feed per 1m²/yard² worth of greens. Might be a bit hard to grow at that level in your small systems but it will give you something to play with. 👍 I wouldn't worry about removing the filters either as a load of bacteria will be in the media in the beds + in the gravel in the tanks. Hope that helps you out a bit. Cheers mate

This is really interesting, all the issues you showed are almost exactly the same problems that happened to my new chop and flip: the charlie carp, the ammonia, the ph swings, right down to the broken test tube, even the damage on your parsley looked identical to my plants! By the way, I added 1.5 teaspoons of calcium carbonate to my system and the previously dormant lettuce burst into life, glad it was something simple. Great videos keep it up!

I popped the rest of the Charlie carp in after I finished the clip & got another spike Sam. Not as much as the first time but it was enough to bump up the nitrite as well. Should have settled down by now I hope & will get back to adding the newer bottle. Hope your system is doing well. Cheers.

Hi Rob, It's been a while since I have done pH testing for my job, but in a NATA accredited lab, for water samples that had a low salt content we would add potassium chloride to increase the ionic strength to give a reliable pH reading. Sodium chloride would work too. It could be that your system has sufficient salt content to give a reliable reading, but is hard to tell. The reliability of the pH reading is dependent on the ionic strength or salt content. The salt helps with the conductivity, which the measurement depends on.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
Hi Idress. I'm fairly confident that the pH reading I'm getting from the Bluelab is on the mark. 👍 There would be a small amount of chloride in there but haven't pulled out the refractometer to do a test yet as it's still packed away from the move home. Cheers mate & have a top one.

For what it's worth Rob, I use Charlie Carp in my system at measured doses. About 6 months ago I put my measured amount into the system and the ammonia went through the roof as well as the pH dropping like a stone. I checked the bottle and it was an old bottle that had sat with about 50mm in the bottom for 12 months. I agree that Charlie Carp seems to have a definite time limit for use before the nitrates etc revert to ammonia. Now I monitor the purchase dates carefully.

Am still seeing a lot of veggie seeds for sale in the cheap shops. Not the best quality for us to grow down here as they're coming from the UK. Fine to start off with & you can always save the seeds from the heirloom varieties to plant out next season. I also found that the smaller nurseries still had some seedlings. Most folks have been trained to shop at the big "B" store nowadays which is unfortunate for them but great for us folks that like to support the small guys. 😉 Are you all set for seeds mate? Cheers.

Hi Rob Bob, have been loving your aquaponics videos for a long time. I have a 2,000 gallon system I am just starting, and I have a question. I'm looking to know what are the best "numbers" for the system. Ideal pH, Ammonia level, Nitrate, Nitrite, Hardness, Oxygenation... etc. Any help would be great. (Understanding that most of these things depend on the crop and the fish raised, just looking for general levels)
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
For pH I am for between 6.5-6.8 as I think it's a good comporomise between the fish & the plants. Ammonia should only be trace if anything, Nitrite 0ppm & nitrate should ideally be between 10-80ppm. O2 is hard to measure as the meters are quite expensive. As a rule of thumb I think it's a good idea to pump into the tank the same amount of air as the tanks volume. Keep in mind that that's for a sensibly stocked system with no more than 1 fish per 6.6gal of water. 👍 Hope that helps some.

Good day Mr Rob and any chemists/aquaponics enthusiasts who are reading this... So I have a very small aquaponics system, in which I grow lemon thyme, chives and parsley for the kitchen. The system holds about around 40l of wat and almost the same amount of grow media... I also have a microcontroller hooked up to 2 electrodes hanging in the water to tell me if my water level is to low. The electrodes operates on 3.3V and simply test for continuity. I bought 2 comets a week or so before Christmas, they are the only fish in my aquaponics system at the moment and I've noticed a while ago that they have turned black on top... I've read that this is as a result of high ammonia NH3 levels. However I only use rainwater and I am topping up the water level every 3 or 4 days with fresh rain. Please tell me if I am wrong... But it yesterday occured to me that the water level probes hanging in the water might cause electrolysis on the water. NH4+ ions will go to the - electrode and form NH3 and H+ while at the + electrode nitrate NO3- wil react with the H+ to form HNO3... I did inspect the electrodes the other day and each one had a different colour/persipitate on it, this is what raised my suspicion. Am I onto something or am I just going insane or being paranoid???? If this is so I guess the effects of this electrolysis would not be so obvious if the system was a few thousand liters/gallons large.... My pH measures neutral, I don't have a kit to measure nitrites and amonia etc as they are stupidly expensive where I live.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
Hi Mate. I'm not sure I can help sorry. The easiest way to test would be a test kit but understand it may be hard to source there. Do you know anyone with an aquarium that might be able to lend you there's for a test or two? Sorry I'm not much help.

Hi Rob, what do you use to keep aphids under control I lost a bunch of strawberry plants due to these little buggers cross-contaminating between the plants? any advice will be appreciated huge van of your videos build most of my system based on yours.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
Keeping ants out of the beds is a great start as they will will farm the aphids for the honeydew they excrete. I found the best way for large infestations ids to just crush as many as you can with a jet of water from the hose. Th then go over & squish any the hose misses by hand. It may take a few days to get the numbers down but it does work. Some folks will then dust the plants with food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) to help control any stragglers. The DE as microscopic sharp edges that will cut into the aphids & kill them off. Hope that helps a bit & that you can get on top on the little buggers.

NH3 should outgas from systems as pH increase or as oxidation occurs, even without the agency of microorganisms, though other redox fractions of N are going to rely upon them heavily. The clay media should serve as good solution buffers for cationic components, but as you've seen, not so great for anions. Rainwater obviously is weakly buffered, so it can experience strong swings in pH with minimal change in additions or subtractions of salts. The use of geotextile materials could be useful for anyone considering adding a fine textured minerals buffer/sorbate media, but also wishing to avoid clouding the system with fine silt or disaggregated clays. Dolomitic minerals are probably the most obviously useful given their solubilities. The hydroponics crowd seems to be ok with using materials from open cycle refineries, but plants have hundreds of millions of years of practice managing that on their own.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
The idea is to get the NH3 to convert through to NO3 so it's less toxic to the fish & plant available not to off gas. Cheers.

Mr Rob, thanks a mil for the vids. Have been studying your material in preparation of starting up my own aquaponics set up. You have mentioned a formula to calculating how much media you need to support your fish (works out to roughly 25L of media per 500g of fish) - so my question to you is: - what if you are running a hybrid system (raftbeds and media beds)? is there a way to tell how many m2 of media is equivalent to how many m2 of raft-beds? Hope my question makes sense. Regards to you and the family, God bless

Hi Plenchie. The rafts will have surface area for the bacteria but I prefer not to count it in the equation. Not including it helps to give you a bit of a buffer in case things go pear shaped. Hey Mathias. I know of an Aussie that grew barramundi in Switzerland so tilapia in Germany should be doable. It would be a case of growing them inside all year round or maybe using a greenhouse where you have some control over the environment might be the way to go. They do start to die when water temp drops towards 10°C so you'll need to keep that in mind. I'm not very experienced with indoors growing or tilapia so hope that helped a bit. @@RobsAquaponics Thanks, Rob, for the help. I didn't mean to make you upset, I am sorry for that. Actually, I was thinking my comment is not visible to you, as this was my first ever comment on RU-vid, I will be more patience next time. After losing 5 fish, what I did is desperately changed my 50% of the water ( about 1500 liters). Although the new water was chlorinated but I was not thinking about this at that time. After changing water everything seems fine except the PH raised from 6 to 6.8, Ammonia 0.5ppm (old value was not measured), Nitrite 0ppm, Nitrate 5.0ppm (old value was not measured). Next time I will do exactly as advised by you.
