Loved that fade away effect at the end. Solid work overall. Thank you for the content.

Great video. There are a ton of spreadsheets and calculators out there to help calculate back up time based on a particular product. For example, a large refrigerator might be 750w so calculate that against your KW/hour capacity to find out how long it should run. Wouldn’t be nice to see one built for the aquarium trade. Add the items you want to run on your aquarium to calculate how much power you need to plan for. Then, dealers’ choice on how to provide the backup power (solar, fuel, etc.).

You can do some fun stuff on an apex to to turn off certain outlets to have extra run time, lots of fun to be had down this rabbit hole! Maybe ill work on something useful for aquarium calculations!

Just had a big snow storm and lost power for 18 hours. Very happy I had a whole house automatic Kholer generator installed in the fall. It cost me 12 grand but worked flawlessly.

That sounds like a sweet setup!

If you live in South-Africa you have to plan your backup power before buying a tank, we currently have 12hours of no electricity every day split into 2 and 4 hour intervals, i have a 2kw inverter running my mp60's

In that case I would likely do a mini solar setup for the tank! Sounds like you have a good solution! Crazy how often it happens.

Hey Deven, great vid - I got a 11kwh Generac whole house standby generator for about $5k installed - they might be cheaper than you think? Once you buy the larger batteries and generator, you are probably $2-3k in anyway? Generac's might be more expensive in Canada, not sure. We just had a snow storm here and it was running for about 18 hours straight hooked up to natural gas line - it could run for weeks if necessary - and it comes on automatically. Good peace of mind for sure...

I’ll dig into it but it was more like 8-10k when I looked into it a few years back. I figure for 1200 Im fine to manually start this one :). So nice to have NG over using gas and other fuels

@@ReefDudes Maybe I got lucky - they installed it at the same time as my solar. Like everything, I wouldn't be surprised if they've gone up in price...

Hey Dev! Great info! I actually made a battery backup similar to the one you are wanting to make using two 206AH lithium batteries , 3000W inverter and a battery charger. They did cost almost 2grand but it works beautifully and I have all my return pumps and flow pumps running on it as backup. No need for a switch it automatically turns on when the power is cut. I can run my essential systems for 3+ days. Eventually going to add solar panels. Thanks for the content!!

Thats awesome! it was funny i was looking at a 12v 400ah battery on amazon that was 1500.. then saw the genny on sale for 1100 and went that route for now. i still want to get a decent battery eventually (to replace my super old led acid onces) so will happen eventually as the "main" backup for shorter stuff.. the Genny can be backup for longer term! Fun stuff to play with! I bet that 206ah one will last quite a while!

Maaan...we just had a huge storm here in NH USA. Thank God I bought a generator last year because we've had major outages...days.

Days before Snowmegedon 2021 I picked up a second generator. During the 2021 storm, the power company cycled power on 60 min/off 45 min for several days. It was enough to keep the house warm and cook meals, but not enough for my tanks. It made using my CPAP impossible. LOL. I used the power on time to fuel up the generators and inspect for leaks or anything that could cause a failure. For those who already have generators, I highly recommend starting them and letting them run a good 20 to 30 minutes before we get too close to the storm moving in. You won't be the only one at the hardware store looking for spark plugs, pull start cords and so on. (I broke the pull start cord the day of the 2021 storm and the on/off switch went bad 2-days into the storm) Get what you need before you really need it. Probably a good idea to pick up some extra fuel cans and fuel ahead of the storm. Worst case is you need it and can't get out of your driveway. A few 25 ft or longer extension chords would be a good idea too. I discovered that I needed 50 ft extension cords. You want the generators running a good distance away from your house to reduce the noise and exhaust fumes getting in the house.

How far from the house do you run yours? This will be my first generator. Was going to speak to an electrician about putting a hookup at my hottub panel. If I flip off the main breaker to disconnect the grid I could just turn on the Circuits to feed the tanks / fridges / furnace. Possible the easiest solution. We have pretty good power where I am so it’s more of a Jsut incase emergency backup plan Sounds like you picked up that genny just in time last year!

@@ReefDudes I have all my APEX power bars on 25 ft entension chords. I wound up the cords and put them in a 5-gal bucket and have the ends plugged into the wall outlet. The bucket just hides extension cords. 25-ft is enough to get outside the house. I then have a high amp splitter that I plug the entension cords into. 4-plugs into one plug. Then I plug that one plug into a 50 ft extension cord and the etension cord into one of the outlets of the generator. I don't use all 50 ft. I may put the generator 30 to 40 feet away from the house. My fishroom/office has french doors that do not seal perfectly. Doesn't help that I'm running extension cords through the closed doors. LOL. When the generator was close to the house and the wind was blowing the exhaust was coming inside. That is why I keep the generator a good distance away from the house.

@@ReefDudes I live in the country so electricity can be sketchy in storms or cold weather. The house is 30+ years old so its not the most efficient. Cool thing though. If you've ever heard of the singer Jewel, this house was her home recording studio/guest house while she lived in Texas. Half the house is set up with sound deadening and wired so they could plug their mics, keyboards and amps into panels in the walls.

I’ve got a Honda 2800 watt inverter generator for my tank specifically. This is overkill (for my needs) from a wattage perspective, but it does the job nicely and leaves plenty of wattage beyond my tank needs to power a few other things.

You can just clip your generator cords to each bus bar of your electrical panel when it goes out and save the money on getting it hard wired.

When we had our freak snow storm in TX 2 years ago I purchased a generator. The generator got to my house after the storm had cleared. My generator runs on propane or gas. It's still sitting in the garage in the box, haven't been opened, go figure 😐. I was looking at the generics too. Putting blankets over the tank, heating water on the gas stove putting the water in bottles to float in the tank to help with the temp, running portable battery air pumps and bailing water to get water movement in a 150 gallon tank was terrible. I never thought about shorting out my neighbors running my new generator when I finally do use it. Can someone fill me in on that? The battery backup I purchased for the gyres failed.
