Substrates! All You Need to Know - The Pros & Cons of 7 Types of Planted Aquarium Soil & Gravel! Don't protest the options, whether your a sand and soil, a dirted Diane Walsted fan or like bare bottom aquariums, there is a substrate and happy solution for you, your planted aquarium or aquascape and it's inhabitants. Be it fish that need basic and buffered water or shrimp needing tannic acidic waters, there are ways to accomplish your aquatic goals with most of the options available.
The real question is: what lights do you have or want to use, do you have root tabs or under sunstrate fertalizers and minerals? Are you using an organically active substrate, a mineral fortified substrate? Will it cause ammonia spikes while cycling, (if so, how do you prevent this?!). And lastly, do you want to rearrange your aquascape frequently? Do you mind gravel vacuuming and cleaning dirty filters? Or is an earthy and silty looking tank bottom, a beautiful and natural looking feature of your aquarium to you?
Your fish and pet shrimp (tetras, discus, corydoras, rainbowfish, angelfish and catfish will thank you, as will your cherry shrimp crystal shrimp, taiwan bee, or caridina/ neocaridina shrimp!)

Can’t believe the amount of information in your channel! Another great thing with most of your videos is that they are all rewatchable, and not just “here’s what happened this week” type of content. Those have their place too, but don’t quite pump out potentially useful information with the same density? as these.

@@Fishtoryhi there just had my stitches out after my 2ft tank came crashing down on me after splitting my head open on the fish stand , ruining my lounge carpet with sand and aqua soil to the horror of my wife. My son saved the two fish which I had only just matured my lovely new tank with , they are fine in a little tank now, which has aqua soil and plants but no cap yet but a double sponge filter fully mature , I dont want to sand cap it till I add fluval stratum and carpet plant it , it's only a little marina 360 round little tank with the two surviving white cloud mountain minnows.

@@Fishtory Your channel always has much information and different than most on YT. I think it's difficult at some point to find something new to talk about at some point... Anyway,. would me tossing old filter material out to make sure the algae water goes away cause a spike in nitrite? Just changing the water in this tank was doing no good at all. I think it was algae water. I only had a little algae on the glass but the water looked just a little greenish. Who knows...maybe it was just cloudy but I've had that enough times to recognize that. So now I have that 1.0 nitrite spike and I've been doing water changes throughout the day. I have it down to .25 so I think this is the only way to get control of this issue. Long story short it had only one fish in it for a couple months. She jumped out as I wasn't paying attention.....now I am expecting a new betta to arrive tomorrow. So I'm scrambling to get the nitrites okay. I do have Seachem Prime so what the heck. I can't do anything much than change the water a couple more times. I use large gravel in this tank and I have a fair amount of live plants in it. I think I can get things under control by MORE water changes hopefully. It has been a challenge to figure out how to make things better as far the green or just cloudy water. My tossing out the old filters has to be what did it...ya think?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 года назад
@@heaven7360 yeaaaah, water changes and a little prime (too much will block up the nitrites and ammonia) which can decrease the food supply of your nitrofying beneficial bacteria and cause it to starve.... so just don't over do it

My water straight out of the tap is 5.5 with a tds of 16. Just about RO from the tap. So substrate is a biggie for me with guppies or endlers or neo shrimp. I have bags of crushed coral on hand and a large supply of Wonder Shells. Plants don't grow well in that almost RO tap water either. You really do have to know the water you are working with, and the stock you intend to keep before you stress over substrates and additives. 👍💕👍

First, I just LOVE your channel! I’m in the process of setting up a new 10g tank for my betta; I plan to add some blue dream shrimp and a small school of nano fish eventually as well. One of my main goals is a tank that will stand the test of time and age and mature over many many years withou the need to redo substrate and whatnot. If I want great plant growth with a variety of stems, epiphytes, some crypts and a small carpet should I use the layering sandwich (sand, active aqua soil mix and cap) or simple gravel/fluorite and let the mulm build and settle over time with root tabs? If I plan to build up back to ~7” + depth what would you recommend using to create that height? Loved the lava rock bag idea and didn’t know if that would work? (PS know this is long winded…I’d be happy to pay for a phone consult. as these are just couple questions of many on my mind ;) let me know!
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Год назад
I like the layering... your plants will likely only ever need 3 or 4 inches Max for root growth, and in nature usually the subtrate underwater is a layer cake for up to several hundred feet! You can use bricks. Milk jugs or soda bottles on their side, with holes for water flow and just sink them fillted with water, then top them with substrate. But i like lava rock or pummice just because its a giang bag of extra filter media and usually mineral rich as well. Cheers and best of luck. Feel free to email me alexanderjwilliamson@gmail.com if you would like a more in depth consult some time. Cheers!

Thank you so much for your reply!!! As always you’re so thorough and helpful :) I went with 1-5” of lava rock, then ADA Amazonia, and a Fluorite cap. Very excited to get planting!

Hi Alex! Have you ever tried adding worm castings to your substrate? I have some laying around and was playing around with the idea of mixing it with some sand and then capping that with pea gravel. I figure if it does wonders for my houseplants then it must be good for my aquarium plants. If I went that route, would you see a need to add root tabs as well? Or would both be too “rich” and melt everything? Also, thank you so much for your videos! I always try to provide enclosures for my animals that mimic their natural environment as closely as possible and really appreciate your insight :)

I might would use Aquasoil for a 10 gal. but it cost to much for me to do a 55gal. My first tank I used a inch of dirt and 2 inches of play sand. I did try river sand but it was to dirty and cloudy. Oh I did mix in several different nutrients to the dirt. That was a month ago and so far so good.

Thankyou for the great video. Could you please let me know what substrates you would use in a new{ not set up yet} 100 gallon freshwater acrylic tank ? I am going to try for a well planted tank with layered substrates so I don't have to replace them too often. Thanks again for your time.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 года назад
I would do half an inch of sand, then 1 or 2 inches of small rocks with voids between them "Pea gravel" and then I prefer a 50/50 mix of ADA Amazonia (with nitrates and ammonia) Then half fluval stratum. (Non-active but rich in minerals and buffers) brightwell works just as well too. ...then that layer is 1 to 2 inches... for a totally of 3 to 5 inches of substrate for a big tank like yours....and you can always cap all that with a fine sand for up to 1 or 2 more inches to hold the plants I'm place. Best of luck! I have a few aquascaoe build tutuorial videos that may help too
@patrickarden5730
@patrickarden5730 Год назад
@@Fishtory Hi Alex, again thanks for the reply. After researching the substrates, the ADA would be kinda expensive for a hundred gallon tank, even as a layer. What could you suggest as a cheaper way to go?, not using dirt. Is Eco Complete mixed in pea gravel with a little Fluval Stratum a good idea? Have you ever done a bare bottom tank with using plants in terracotta pots with ADA or stratum. That would be a bit more affordable if the plants would last but might not be as good looking as substrate. Anyway, your wisdom is appreciated. Thanks.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Год назад
@@patrickarden5730 so if I were you I'd get like one bag of ADA (because it has nitrates in 3 forms plus minerals)...potting soil does also, but makes a murky mess for a long time or if you ever move things, so I avoid it. So I'd recommend a bag I'd ADA, then whatever is cheap and available ...even be it pea gravel... if you want you can definitely also use pots and plant only key high nutrient loving plants.... like stem plants with color in them or some Lagenandra bulb species that have beautiful metallic dusted looking leaves and colors. For anything you'd buy from say... aquarium co op's website, the ADA isn't necessarily, and root tabs every 6 inches or so will work fine. If you want co2 and high light in the future, definitely use ADA... if you care more about the fish than colorful or exotic plants then you can forget the ADA or "Organically active/nitrogen enriched substrates" and just use some akidama, Fluval stratum or brightwell type products. There are no hard and fast rules, but that's my 2 cents on if it's worth spending the money. I tend to spend the money on a bag for 60$ then a 45$ bag of fluval and a 5$ bag of peagravel and 12 dollar bag of coarse sand....and mix all 4 into a layer for planting in my bigger tanks. Side note...any soil product with nitrates usually puts off ammonia for a week or two, and so needs a good filter running...and needs to be phased in about 20% every few days...as a new substrate in a tank with fish...or just needs to be cycled until 0 ammonia... a total of 2 to 4 weeks in most cases I see. ... but plants grow like gangbusters for that cycling period If you DO decide to use the enriched soils and substrates. Best of luck and best wishes to you!

From Wikpedia: "Periphyton is a complex mixture of algae, cyanobacteria, heterotrophic microbes, and detritus that is attached to submerged surfaces in most aquatic ecosystems. The related term Aufwuchs (German "surface growth" or "overgrowth") refers to the collection of small animals and plants that adhere to open surfaces in aquatic environments, such as parts of rooted plants. Periphyton serves as an important food source for invertebrates, tadpoles, and some fish. It can also absorb contaminants, removing them from the water column and limiting their movement through the environment. The periphyton is also an important indicator of water quality..." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periphyton

Hello, new subscriber here! I've been watching your vids and I have to say I'm impressed. I've been thinking about having a filter less aquarium with a deep active substrate with multiple layers and two distinct biomes. On one part, I want there to be a top layer of large stones to create crevices for small invertebrates to hide in and provide a place to allow algae to grow and in the other part of the aquarium, I want to have something like soil for plants to grow and provide food & shelter for the invertebrates I want to keep. (No fish or any other vertebrates.) What kinds of substrates would you suggest? And how would you suggest layering the substrate?

You mentioned needing to do large, frequent water changes to remove ammonia when setting up a dirted substrate. Would it not be possible/beneficial to leave that in and allow the plants and beneficial bacteria to feed and grow from this. I've recently set up a 10g with dirt+sand cap, lots of plants, no fish yet. Hoping you could provide insight if I'm wrong to just let things run their course till everything balances out. Love your channel!

You can do that as well..it just depends how much ammonia...they say 2 to 4 ppm without fish...and with plants is great for the first 2 or 3 weeks... plants love it. But if its artificially fertalized ill see readings into the 8 or 9 ppm and that when i hit the water changes

I am on a well my ph is 8.0 but my tds out of the tap is 139 . I have a hard time getting even simple low light plants like hornwort, guppy grass to grow like it should. I do 20% water changes when my tds hits about 200-220 which is 2-3 weeks. Should i be letting the tds get to around 300+ ? i keep mostly livebearers and plecos.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 лет назад
Yeah tds isnt as crucial as you may think (other than invertebrates of some special species). Id honestly get an active substrate and add it 2 to 4 cups every 3 days (to let the tank colonize more bacteria to absorb the ammonia spike). But that would get your ph to 6.5 or 7 easily if you just track it weekly. Plants really hate strongly alkaline water. Also plecos like acidic water in the vast majority of species...so while i raise endlers and guppies with plecos also.... i make sure to make the plecos happy (tds doesnt matter for most...but neutral to acidic ph with tannins from a few leaves will really help them...as for livebearers, they adjust to water as low as 6.0/6.5 in most cases, but like that calcium in the water column via running through limestone bedrock springs when they're living in the wild

@Fishtory
@Fishtory 8 месяцев назад
So i disagree.. the bacteria is 98% on surface area... so it shouldnt kill your cycle unless the media dries out. But id say pull water from the top of the tank...then some debris will build up...fish poo etc... plants or extra traces of food...and that will im turn convert to ammonia and feed/speed up the cycling process of nitrosoma and nitrobactcilis bacterial colonies. Cheers!

@Fishtory 3 года назад
No... if you put the substrate in dry and cap it... you can get away with no rinsing...I still recommend rinsing it a bit...sometimes where's weird plastic or wood bits in substrates...and it floats off...and if it's a fine enough particle, it can choke the fish to death in it's gills... if it were to be kicked up, when you yank out a plant or move something in the hardscape.... but essentially, if it's capped then cycled, you'll be A-OK

Hey! :) I know we've exchanged Comments concerning the wire-shelving you're using as a tank rack, but I could use a bit more info, details, please. What size (gallon/liter) tanks, and how many tanks are on your wire-shelving? Do you recall the brand name, and where you bought, maybe not bought, the shelving? Thx! :) And also, nice variety of livestock.

It's from home depot and was 54 dollars.... it's their in store brand and was just in shelving section. It holds about 300 lbs per 5 shelves, i assembled 4 levels.... a 20 gallon Long then another 20 2 2Ls and the bottom holds a 10 and 5 or 4 -5gallons , or 3 10s when put on their sides i believe. I put down chipboard and then fabric over the wires and load it heavier towards the back of the racks (rocks in the tanks etc. Just in case of an earthquake. Its 36 or 36 inches by 16-18 on each shelf if i recall correctly

Is it just as beneficial to have deep substrate with inert as it is with active? I'm using large grain sand and crushed lava rocks for max surface area. Also, do plants need that much supplementation if the tank is populated with detritivores who constantly recycle them? Until today I was under the impression that plants would live mostly off decomposing mulm. Now I'm all confused lol
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 года назад
Well yes, the deep substrate is just a great reservoir for mulm and plant matter or food that gets missed. If you have an old tank then it likely has a lot of nutrients (enough for most slow growing plants) however root tabs are a big plus for the color and vitality of plants. In the wild they live off thousands of years of decomposed and stored nitrates, carbon, phosphates, metals etc. But our aquariums can only harness a small amount of that...so supplements are a good idea for any root bound plants, stem plants or bulbs. Now if you have Java ferns, moss, floating plants or water column feeding plants. You either need to have easy plants, and a decent light + a full fish load to create those nitrates...OR a supplemental fertilizer usually in liquid form as an 'all in one'...then lighting isn't as key...but do note that the lovely reds, pinks and oranges come from low nitrates 10-40ppm and high light/high mineral and elemental micro content. Best of luck!

I think some aquasoil like fluval stratum will help you a ton... i like 1 inch gravel 2 inches aquasoil fluval stratum is the best for the money imho. And its full of minerals for plants, but no ammonia. Then i cap soil with .5 to 1.5 nches of sand to help keep things stay put. Root tabs help too

@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 года назад
Bryan, excellent question, my friend. I recommend gravel for an inch... fluval stratum for 2 inches with root tabs every 5 or 6 inches then a cap of half sand half crushed coral (1lb coral for every 10 gallons is about perfect for guppies). Then the Fluval and plants will keep ph around 7...which guppies still breed like mad in. Best of luck!

Just the ugf, a layer of 1 inch lava rock or coarse gravel, then your aquasoil or dirt substrate and a looser cap if you do one, since you want water to pull through the substrate slowly...

It'll be okay...most panda garra don't play well with other fish if alone (they suck on their slime coats and pester them)...so they recommend keeping them in groups of 5 or 6+...however when one of them hates the others in the group and they fight (check out my video of them fighting)... then I moved the dominant male and the fish in this tank are too small for him to suck on, or bug...so he sticks to plants and glass heeh

I have a gravel substrate and ordered eco complete because I'm adding live plants. I figured I'd put the gravel on top to make my life easy. But I wasnt thinking and ordered my shrimp who a few are pregnant scs. How do I incorporate the ecocomplete? I do not have a breeder tank and have 10 black bar endlers and 5 mystery snails. I bought excel and api leaf zone but I'm afraid to use it. I "planted" some plants in tiny pots and just set them in there for now. I did this so backwards 😳
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 года назад
Actually potting them isnt a bad idea... but what i do, is put down some gravel for a 1/2inch to an inch layer, then i rinse off a coffee can or maybe 1 to 2 lbs/ a kilo or less of whichever soil substrate and just start from one side, and make it 1.5 to 2 inches.... or 4 to 7cm thick on top of the gravel and wait 48 hours.... take a test reading for nitrates and or ammonia.... then do a 30 or 40% water change and whenever the nitrates look close to 0 ill add another round...sometimes it can take like 2 to 3 weeks to soil a 20long or more for a 40 breeder.. but its the only real safe way to do it. Also make sure the flow is decent in the tank, so your water is in contact with as much filter media and beneficial bacteria as possible!

Honestly in a tank that small, I'd use the filter as your nitrogen mitigation. A sponge filter or a little box filter ...or even just a small shrimp/hang off the back filter. The Substrate won't matter much in such confined spaces, so keep it shallow, sculpt it how you like and I'd use some aquasoil for any rooted plants you plan on using , probably just sand elsewhere.

Not inherently... it is simply volcanic splatter similar to pumice, but in denser clay pellets. Dirt is great for many, but it's more advanced in layering and care (similar to aquasoil) but clouds the water for up to a few weeks at first and cycling takes much longer/altering anything with the aquascape can choke the fish with silt or o2 depletion. So while it works well, I didn't want to get into all that detail
