I was just reading about African annual killifish, and how the smectites in the soil and botanical components(root link between tannin and botanical?) Affect whether the eggs will hatch or not, and most US states have areas with vernal ponds, even if there aren't "fish" that doesn't mean the fairy shrimp and triops and salamanders don't rely on similar soil and tannin compositions as well. Thank you for drawing attention to this often overlooked aspect of the hobby, Tannins and botanicals can be more than just aesthetic choices for your tank.

I recently watched one of your videos about the history going back through the ages , and it made me realize we are still only in the infancy of keeping fish in aquariums.

Your deep dives into elements of fishkeeping are unparalleled, make for great stories, and teaches alot. Thank you for your work! I would love a deep dive into salt(s). They also have alot of research for use in this hobby, and I find them quite underutilized. You rarely find habbitats in nature with 0 salinity, and so I wonder why that is not the first thing we should add, and maintain, in any aquarium.
@Fishtory

Thank you very kindly. I try my best. I should do a video on salts...especially Europeans and Canadians who are not able to use other meds as readily . I have a video on the phosphate cycle, which most people have no idea about... I think its interesting lol. I've been meaning to do a deep dive into kh gh and tds ...maybe ph as well. So I'll definitely keep it in mind for my notes and in my upcoming videos. Cheers

Great video!! Just today, I added a few small, dry, Magnolia grandiflora leaves to the 75 gallon river scape aquarium I mentioned yesterday in the comments of another of your videos. I also added a nerite snail, some water wisteria and bacopa. The tank is designed to to be a habitat focused on loaches. Namely dojo, hillstream, and khuli loaches. I'm not going for a black water tank per se, but I I thought the tannins from the Magnolia leaves would be a good addition. Thanks again for all you do. You're the best Aquarium based RU-vidr. I stumbled upon this video a while back and it helped with an issue I had with a new betta. It's fins got shredded up by the filter. It kept lying on the bottom of the tank and not being very active. After watching this video for the first time, I put some chunks of coco coir mulch in his tank, which tinted the water a bit. After that, his fins grew more in a day than the previous week.

I'm not even halfway through and my mind is blown. Not sure if you touch on this, but some orchid-growers will soak media and roots of some orchids that are having problems in black tea specifically for the tannins so that the plants are triggered to grow more and healthier roots. Many people don't know that orchid seeds have no endosperm and can only grow in nature with the help of mycorrhizal fungi. So now I'm wondering what interplay there is between mycorrhizae and the tannins found in vascular plants. We already know that these fungi are the only microbes that are capable of breaking down lignin (and thus fixing N).

I’m trying to work out your background, I tend to listen to columnist/media/RU-vidrs somewhat loyally for a while, so I know what to trust and in what context they are strongest. I’m an industrial chemist but that doesn’t always help in something complex like an aquarium. Honesty, the more you know the harder it gets, because there are layers of understanding and then the many many interactions. In general, science tends to work in isolation, single compounds, and not on the system level, at least what you get from Google. In fact it’s the interactions and systems where the real discovery is, but that takes so long to untangle, a body of science can begin to loose some information along the way. In a way, even an MD ends up being a technician, where you know what works but time and cost may not always allow for understanding it all, before a new problem arises. Often an experienced scientist will have an instinct that goes beyond written science, and a careful hobbyist too. The main thing I’m getting is you have kept and shared a sense of wonder in nature, pretty cool.

Haha so I was schooled for Archaeology/cultural anthropology and History. Then i proceeded to do nothing with archaeology, not finish the phd, due to family and health/money issues, then due to that, I started tattooing and graphic design, as well as painting and woodcarving for 15 years or so, owning my own studios...until tada youtube the last couple years is my full time gig. As for other disciplines, I just love learning! Basically name a hobby or feild of study and i was probably obsessed with it for a few months haha. For instance, i have a chemistry background for clandestine hobbies as a teen... but that's about it beyond honors chem in high school. Anyhow big systems are where the magic come out, for sure! Cheers

@@Fishtory I started out collecting rocks, then building stuff, and chemistry was mostly clandestine, not a few jack o lanterns met unexpected fates. Aquariums got in there and dominated my junior high and early college. I was tracking to do ichthyology, but getting married changed this along w God. Ended up in paint industry as formulator. Traveling less I got back into one tank. Trying to keep it small, as I also got into guitar, gardening, baking, photography and can’t support all my hobbies. For me aquariums are gardening in the winter.

I'm new to the aquarium world and had to find out a lot of stuff the hard way unfortunately losing fish ect more recently couldn't get the bad levels down even after water changes, recently been watching some videos on here talking about leaves being a good thing for the tanks so another amateur mistake I guess but went into my back garden to my grape Vine where the leaves are now brown and falling so put 3 or 4 in the tank and within a day the levels started to drop day 3 and dropped even further fish are looking good and loving the leaves so far so good but will keep my eye on it 😊

Hey Alex jyst had a thought, I'd be interested in a video about the tannins in driftwood/other wood as opposed to leaves which you other videos focus on. How do they compare, are they the same tannins or different, what are the pros and cons of each etc
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Год назад
Identical.... but in different combinations. Every single plant, wood, seed, stem, leaf or pod is different....and so much so, that the same tree species may have some leaves that are 2 or 3x stronger than its others.

I just threw some lilac bush branches in my tank a couple of weeks ago. It doesn’t seem to be producing much tannins. Ph is still stuck at 7.6. I have hard well water. 290 ppm.

Looking for advice on whether there is a limit to how many leaves to add to a 15 gallon tank with vibrant community of neon tetras guppies loaches and shrimp.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Месяц назад
So guppies and shrimp can't handle a ph under 6.5 or so .... so just check the ph or boil the leaves and pour off the water and some tannins if you want the leaf material and not the organic acids in the leaves
@EricJSmith-qe7cn
@EricJSmith-qe7cn 10 дней назад
Do the beneficial elements all infuse into the water? Or does the organic material need to be accessible to the fish? Would one want to build a tannin tank(s) and regulate its water solution flow into the fish tank? Thank you! Great stuff on your channel. I’m glad I found it the other day. The most recent comment I saw from you was dated a year ago. You had a bad fall. I hope you have recovered well.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 10 дней назад
First of all, welcome! Yes I've recovered and I'm on to the next illness or injury haha. As for tannins they just need to be in contact with the water column to soak. All the alkaloids are water soluble

Can you talk about Carbon filters? I bought a hang on filter and it has activated carbon in it. I see people say it removes almost everything and should only be used when you want to remove medication or nasty stuffs like new paints in your house and such I also heard it is porus, any thoughts on just throwing away the used charcoals in substrates? it will add free(cost) volume to it and might be a good place for bacterias

Alex, around 27 minutes where you are talking about tannins sequestering metals, would this cause salt (NaCl) to lock up tannins and prevent them from being useful? A lot of us add a little salt to a tank on occasion , so would this mean that adding tannins afterwards would remove any salts, but also waste any potential benefit of the tannins?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Год назад
Great question! It can form into some more complex salts, yes...but it can only sequester or bond to a small amount relatively, compared to water dissolving it also. So it may take 10 or 20% But its not significant for most aquarists

Hey I wanted to do a blackwater tank with a live eco system, I’m planing on seeding my tank with daphnia, black worms, aquatic pill bugs. What other kinds of micro critters do u think I should add to have a live substrate? and/or equipment or tank parameters I should shoot for?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Год назад
With worms..id do a live substrate. Daphnia will be low in population likely, because they need algae to grow and algae is stiffled by the tannins...seed shrimp are another good choice...or scuds

Thank YOU! AND yes, you got both those health issues correct haha. I may also be on the spectrum according to tests from when i was a kid, but i never really cared either way to persue it as an adult and find out...but the tendancies and OCD/fixation are extremely strong in my personality
@dellseasandoval8187
@dellseasandoval8187 Год назад
Growing up everyone always knew my OCD was strong with extreme fixations on particular topics, such as anything to do with rocks or wood 🪵 or plants 🪴 or astrophysics 🪐 or rocketry 🚀 having to do with the chemistry or engineering of it. No one ever knew anything about autism though. I was shocked when Elon Musk himself out of his own mouth gas talked about his Asperger’s, which is the same type I have. Recently, they have put all types of Autism altogether another just so people are on the spectrum but getting a formal diagnosis is very different & just having suspicions. I would recommend formally looking into that part of yourself if you think there might be anything there. I have found it to be nothing but helpful on every level.

So, is it possible to have a tank rich in tannins that also has a neutral pH? I want to do a “lower aggression” well planted betta home with Amano shrimp and Malaysian trumpet and maybe other snails, and Pygmy cories. Here and there in your other videos it seems you were saying this is possible-but HOW? Sorry if this is confused newbie question.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Год назад
Yes its possible, but it requires a bit of skill. So you add crushed coral or carbonate....or gss co2, then get the tds to 150 or 200 with crushed coral... and near neutral ph... by adding leaves...so the tds isnt low and the water isnt soft. So with a balanced ph and tannins in the water, your offset the acidity with the crushed coral...and likely use botanicals, aquasoil and slowly add them...until you can see the colors you want....then just add a table spoon or quarter cup lf aragonite or crushed coral until the ph isnt so acidic.
@MelodieRose727
@MelodieRose727 11 месяцев назад
I’ve been adding a catappa leaf to each of my tanks for the last year or so, and if the ph ever gets below 7, I add a handful of crushed coral or argonite sand. In a week or two (or longer? Unsure precisely but I do test the tanks regularly), it is back up to a nice 7 or 7.5. It may matter that my tap water is super hard, the gh is always off the charts. My understanding of these things is rudimentary and I’m trying to learn if that will even work long term. Just anecdotal evidence from a newbie who keeps livebearers. 😊
